Hi, I have been looking around for a 3 day cruise to the bahamas in march for the start of our trip! It doesn't need to be Disney, but something reasonable, and not going to break the bank. I am at a total loss, as we have never done one ever! So I don't even know where to start!!! Are your meals included? Do you need alot of spending money while onboard the ship. I looked at Carnival, Disney, and Nowegian. When would be the best time to book one for March? We are looking to be in Florida from March 6th or 7th, and would like to do the cruise at the start of my vacation, for a 3 day. I only want a 3 day to start, because we are not sure we are going to like a cruise or not! Nobody with motion sickness in this family, but you never know, right!
Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there. I'll try to give you a little help. We have been on many cruises so I do know a thing or two;).
First of all, your cruise fare does include your meals and most entertainment (shows, etc). Extra charges would be for alcoholic drinks, pop (or soda as they call it). Usually when you eat in the dining room you can get water, iced tea or milk with your meal for no charge. If you or your kids drink a lot of pop, you can buy a soda card. In the buffet area they usually have the same selection of coffee, tea, iced tea, sometimes lemonade, (depends on the cruise line) and milk in cartons at breakfast.

As far as when to book, do it as soon as you have decided which one you want to do. Some people will say wait for last minute deals, but March is a spring break month AND you are traveling with children. You want a cabin that will accommodate a family and those can be limited on some ships. You will usually put down a deposit at booking and your final payment won't be due until 75-60 days before the cruise. I have put deposits on cruises before and then changed my mind and got full refunds as long as it was outside the 75 day mark. (once again depends on the cruise line)

As this is your first cruise, I would recommend booking through a cruise specialist travel agent. It doesn't cost you any more and they usually get the same price you would get online. You can go on travelocity and search your dates an 3 day cruises first to see what is out there.

Keep in mind that for a 3 day cruise you will likely be booking an older ship that while nice, won't have the "bells and whistles" that a newer larger ship would. The cruise lines tend to put their older, smaller ships on the short trips. So, while it is a good taste of what a cruise is like, it is a lot different on a 7 day cruise on a newer super ship.

Carnival is a great choice with kids as they have a great kids program and will be cheaper than Disney. Disney will be a nicer ship on a 3 day itinerary though. Carnival does 3 day cruises from Tampa.

Extra charges on all ships would be tips (usually about $10 per person per day; some bill less for kids), alcohol, pop, casinos, bingo, coffee from the specialty coffee bar, any shore excursions. That's all I can think of. We don't find we spend much at all on our cruises as we don't drink or gamble.
The kids programs are free, but it is nice to tip the camp counsellors at the end of the cruise.

Also, go over to cruisecritic.com. You will find the forums there really helpful.

Thank you so much aristocat, you have gave me someplace to start and thats what I needed! I will take sometime to look around and see what I can find! I am doing this myself as a surprise to my hubby and kids! Since I do all the booking for Florida vacations. I thought instead of doing a 11 day at a resort, I would do a motel the first night, catch a 3 day cruise, then rent an offsite rental for 7 days after the cruise! I could technically do a 4 night cruise, if I could find a early enough flight to get there for ship departure time, but that would all have to come together.
Usually I have my hubby to bounce things off of, but we have been to Florida this being our 4th winter in a row, I wanted to change it up a little, and since we had my older nephew and his girlfriend do a bahama cruise from Miami last year, my kids and hubby have mentioned it a few times!
I would like to try to surprise them with this! I may be back with more questions!
Thanks again, you have been a huge help!

You're welcome:) I do think you should stick with your idea of a motel the first night and then on to the cruise. It is ALWAYS a good plan to fly in the day before your cruise just in case of flight delays. The ship doesn't wait:scared1: Even though the ship may leave at 5 pm, you can board usually as early as 12 pm or 1 pm and certainly will need to be on by 3:30. Another option is to do the cruise after your Disney time. Might be nice to relax after running around Disney for a week.

We did a 3 night cruise, after 4 nights at WDW, for our honeymoon 4 years ago. It was AWESOME! We went with Royal Caribbean. After four days at Disney, we rented a car, and drove to Port Canavaral (it was cheaper than taking a shuttle and more convenient). We had an outside cabin which was nice but we were rarely in our room. The food was AMAZING! Every night, my DH would ask for more food and they would bring it to him! One night, they even brought him the leftover appetizers from the night before! The service was excellent.

The best part about cruising with Royal Carribean is that you spend a day at their private island. I think Norwegian has one too but not Carnival. Anyways, they serve this HUGE BBQ lunch, and you can do all kinds of activites. The beach is absolutely beautiful.

We did not get motion sickness and actually I almost never felt the boat rock, except the one night we had a few too many beverages! ;) The "extras" can get a little expensive so beware.

We booked through an agent at CruiseShipCentres. They gave us a better price than anything online and she was very very helpful.

What a nice surprise!!

Thank you one and all! I have begun my search and will be coming back with questions! I just wish the airlines Airtran/SW would open their March windows for me so I know what days exactly I would be flying! AHHHHH I hate the waiting game!

i just booked my first DCL 3 day cruise, if you are looking for more info on DCL go to the DCL boards all the answers are there. (see link)

Soda (pop) are free at the drink station on deck 9 (Magic & Wonder), I believe deck 12 for the Dream. Also free with meals. You do have to pay if you order from bar. 24 hr free room service (only remember to pay tip). All meals are free on the ship, except for Palo adult only restaurant (optional).

Actually there is a brand new AMAZING Disney ship, the Dream :cloud9: that is making her maiden voyage in January 26th 2011 and will be making 3 $ 4 day cruise out of Port Canaveral.

there is no Casino on a Disney cruise. Kids program are free and the counselors are not in a tipping position. therefore they must turn their tip to the manager. The best way to thank them is to take the time to mention them by name to the manager. Many praises goes a long way for raises, promotion, etc.

Link to a tipping calculator for various cruises:

http://cruisetip.tpkeller.com/

on a Disney cruise the suggested tipping is 12$ per person (adult & kids). excluding bar, spa service 7 room service...

Since this is our 1st cruise and it is short we are not doing any excursion. I figured that there is more than enough activities to keep us all busy...

As for a TA, I heard that Dreams Unlimited was amazing for DCL. (we got this cruise from aeroplan)

Good luck and like someone else mentionned the ealier you book the better. With Disney you can cancelled I think up to 75 day (not sure) before your cruise no penalty.
Price do go up as time goes on!!!

Thank you for your added comments. I haven't been on a Disney cruise (with a 17 year old son, we are getting out of that demographic;)). My comments were relating to Princess, NCL, RCCL, Carnival and Holland America.
