Thanks for the link.

Always enjoy reading about how the parks were constructed, especially EPCOT Center.

Just finished reading "Building A Better Mouse - The Story of the Electronic Imagineers Who Designed EPCOT" by Steve Alcorn & David Green. Amazing what they were able to accomplish is such a short period of time.

Wow, really impressive... The number of men it took to accomplish, and the short time frame... Great read I am glad I stumbled across this! I will be able to appreciate EPCOT even more now when I visit in Nov.

Thanks so much for posting - extremely interesting.

  • 1 Billion? Everest cost half that! Course it was 70's $$$.
  • Had no idea Disney got that type of Sponsor Money up-front! While the article does not quote a final figure, I would guess that 30 to 40% of the entire cost was paid by sponsors.

Have always felt Epcot was / is an Enigma. All of this was done in the "What Would Walt Do?" era. Thrill rides were only in their infancy.

Certainly nobody is going to build a Replica of Epcot. Despite that - there is a certain charm to the entire place that I find irresistible.

The greatest amusement/theme park ever created by a nautical mile (taking in all the factors)...

and something we would never see again. The computer age/mass media/ internet would make the design DOA if it hadn't been pitched till today.

Disney almost bankrupted itself building...but thank heavens they did. It's a monument to what was good about Disney and American ingenuity in the 20th century...and sadly...what almost can't be found now.
