I'm hoping that someone can help me find reasonably-priced 24K gold earrings for DD7. We have tried every other type of hypoallergenic earring on the market, and her ears get crazy-infected within 24-48 hours. My cousin has this same problem, and her mom told me 24K gold will solve it.

The problem is, finding some that aren't expensive! That, and the backs are usually made of a lesser material. I hope to have solved that already by ordering plastic backs from Amazon. They take a month to arrive (:scared1:) but it's ok because these will be a christmas gift.

I'm not a big jewelery person, so the only 24K gold earrings I have are my diamond studs, but since they cost $900 I'm not letting her run around wearing them! (I knew that ex-boyfriend would be good for something :thumbsup2)

If you have anywhere in mind that sells cute 24K for a reasonable price, please let me know! TY

I think you mean 14K; 24K would be too soft for jewelry.
Gold is still very high now so "affordable" would be to wait for the gold prices to go down.

I know you said you've tried all the hypoallergenic earrings on the market, but since they're not widely-known, I have to throw out a recommendation for Simply Whispers earrings. They are sold via catalog and online and are practically all I wear. Even 14-k gold will make my ears itch if I wear them more than one day, but I wear these every day with no problems and have for years. They do have solid-gold earrings, too, so if you haven't already, try their website. They have kids' sizes and styles.

I have sensitive ears. If possible why don't you just take out the earrings each night. I take off all my jewelry and choose a new pair each morning.

Another more reasonably priced suggestion: Go to a reputable body piercing shop or online and buy body piercing rings instead. (I know it sounds off the wall, especially for kids, but it made a huge difference for me!) My ears were always sore until I switched to the body jewelry. They make very small gauge rings that are the same size as regular earring posts, and even some pretty colors and shapes that your DD might like. I believe the ones I have are 18 gauge and they slipped right in.

Something like these:

Not true. The studs my ears were pierced with (by my Dr) when I was 13 (40 yrs ago) are 24K. My sister and I both had them done at the same time and neither of us have ever had an infection or allergic reaction (nickel). My mom and other sister had theirs done at the mall and neither can wear anything but 14K gold or higher because of reactions to nickel. I've been told that when you use anything but 24K gold you are being exposed to nickel among other metals during the healing process and your body reacts by "rejecting" those metals later on.

Point is, you can get 24K gold earrings but they won't be cheap with current gold prices. I still have my 24k gold studs that the Dr used. They aren't exactly fashion earrings, but they did the job. The cheaper route is 24Kt gold over another metal which would also work.

You can special order almost anything from a jeweler, so I'd try that too.

Of course, you could do what I just did and "google" 24kt gold earrings and get tons of hits.

Try a local pawn shop. I bought my daughter's gold earrings that way.

You might try gold earrings with stainless steel posts. I am allergic to nickel and I use stainless steel posts and stainless steel watch bands and have no problems.

If you try 24k gold earrings, make sure they are not just plated because the nickel used for its hardness can leach through the gold.

Here are some samples of stainless steel earrings.

I'm the same way, I can wear stainless steel or 14K gold (or higher) . Most other earrings make my ears start oozing (sorry) and get very sore.

sears/kmart usually have gold kids earrings for cheaper

also I had been told to dip the post in neosporin or other antibiotic ointment before inserting into to her ears

Me too! I still have the original ones my ears were pierced with. They were the only ones I could wear for a long time. I never liked the ones that the backing could touch your ear (mine clicked in at the back and couldn't go any closer to my ear).

Do you have a Michael Hill near you? They have some cheaper items. I think the gold hoops I'm wearing were about $10.

I've heard that people with skin allergy problems should not use neosporin, because it may bother their skin. Trying to remember if my dermatologist told me that, or if I read it somewhere. Could be the "inactive ingredients" are the problem.

Are you using the cleaning solution from the piercing place? I found that using plain rubbing alcohol to clean the earrings and the lobes worked better. I second the neosporin suggestion. It makes it easier to insert the earrings, too. Test some inside her elbow first to see if she is allergic, but it's not a common allergy. Turn the earrings several times a day so the earring stays loose and the hole doesn't "heal" around the post.

Claire's sells hypoallergenic earrings as well as the plastic replacement backs.

My mil gave me her own baby earrings. They have screw-on button backs so the baby can't remove them without help. If you see a pair at a pawn shop, they'll be good.

My 2 DD and I all have sensitive ears and I just stick to 14K and sterling. My DD who is 8 and big for her age has already been using adult earrings for a couple years now. Just something to think about when you are searching-might be easier if you open up your search to adult earrings.

That said, I have been having great luck on amazon for simple cheap gold and silver hoops.

goodluck, and I hope she really doesn't need 24K!

I take my earrings out every night.

Yes, it's 14k not 24. That's what I get for trying to remember a conversation from a few months ago, instead of going back to look it up on Facebook.

I found some ugly ones at Kmart, 14k gold plated sterling silver. 3 pair for $20 so I'm not entirely sure I believe the 14k gold part. Every other place I looked was much more expensive.

Found some at Kohl's today. Most were in the $30/pair and up range, but found some with screw-on backs for $20. I think the backs are what gives her the most trouble, so I plan to use plastic backs.

I'm going to keep looking, and now that I realize it was 14k, I will check amazon again. I'm also going to check some of the suggestions here, thank you all! Plus, I'm going to find a magnifying glass and check the markings on all my earrings, see if there are any we can try.

To be honest, I like to blame her father for this whole problem. When she was nearly 3, he planned to take her to get her ears pierced, but the week before she got very sick. She was in the hospital for 2 days, and he picked her up 4 days later for his weekend. I asked him to wait another 2 weeks to let her body heal, but he took her to the mall and got it done anyway. Nothing but trouble from the start. I'll give it a few more tries, but I've already warned her that we might have to let the holes close and try again when she is older.

was wondering how you would find 24 K gold!!
For DD (who lost one of my diamond earrings in platinum) we used the 14 K earrings she got her ears pierced in until she lost one of them (person who pierced her ears at the pedi office toldus only 14 K or up or platinum). We got her a tiny 14 K pair from Zales that she has done well with. Blue nile may be good? Or else you can try some of them department stores--sometimes they have good sales.
Maker her dad shell out some money for a nice pair!:)
