I'm looking for some opinions on how to handle a resort stay that celebrates my twins 21st birthday in summer of 2027.

Here's the basics:

Travel Dates: Sun 8/8-Saturday 8/14, 2027 (6 nights; these dates are pretty much set given school schedules--kids in college, wife, mother-in-law, and I work in high schools).

Party: Me (51), Wife (about my age 😉), Mother-in-law (76), Daughter (21), Son (21), Friend who is basically our third child (21).

Background: Myself, wife, twins are Disney regulars who have been to WDW every (sometimes other) year since the kids were 6. My wife's mother has not been since 1980s and the kids friend has never been. I'm thinking my wife's mother may need an ECV--while she is very mobile and active, we're very concerned about her getting all of that walking done in the August Florida heat and humidity. Our style is rope drop to 11 or 12, resort relaxing time, back to parks 3 or 4 to close (Like Jackson Browne said, "get up and do it again. A-men")

We are going to rent DVC points for a 2 BR villa (we have typically used David's but the DVC store is showing slightly lower prices).

My son has made it clear that staying at the Poly is a non-negotiable, but staying 6 nights at a Poly 2BR is a really expensive proposition. So I'm thinking we do a split stay (which we've never done) of 3 nights Poly and 3 nights at a different resort.

I've run some of the numbers and have found that these are our best options:

1. Poly/BWV (2BRs)
2. Poly/BC (2BRs)
3. Poly/AKL (2BRs)
4. Poly/Saratoga (2BRs)
5. 2 Poly Deluxe Studios /Saratoga 2BR

Obviously the 2 Poly Studio/Saratoga 2 BR is the most attractive to me as it almost half the cost of the Poly 2BR for 6 nights, but my wife is not excited about sharing one room and one bathroom with her mother for 3 days.

I did not include BLT or Riv because we have stayed there before and want to try something new. None of us are really into the GF vibe. I included BC because of its location but none of us like the theming as we live in New England. We love the theming at AKL but have not stayed at a bus only resort in many years. Saratoga is the least expensive and would also allow walking distance to Disney Springs.

What would you do? Cost is obviously important, but location is a close second.

How important is Disney Springs? My vote would be Poly/BWV. Great location for someone who is turning drinking age and wants some fun. I get you on the BC theme. I’m from New England, too.

SSR holds no appeal to me, even at a lower price. I’d much rather do OKW. Similar price and better vibe. AKL is gorgeous but so secluded. Great for a relaxing resort-focused stay, but is that what they want for their 21st birthday?

BoardWalk is hard to beat! But, WDW Swan is also close by, pretty newly refurbished rooms, walkable to the BoardWalk bars & entertainment and *could be* a cost saving alternative, especially if you have Marriott points. Plus, Kimonos 21+ karaoke is pretty fun!!

I'd think DS would be fun for newly-minted 21yr olds. Lots of bar hopping (if that's on the agenda) so my thought would be the Poly/SSR combo.

I’d do BWV or BC for the split unless the kids really want to walk to DS. The walking access to EP is clutch when everyone is 21+

The resorts are also far more compact than AKV or SSR. SSR in Aug sounds like misery, everything is outside so you don’t even get a break from the heat or weather when walking to your room. Frankly- SSR is cheap for a reason. For some it’s a perfect blend of savings and DS access- for others like myself I hated it due to the size and would literally have been happier at Pop. I don’t think a trip this special with this mix of people is a good time to determine if the savings of SSR is worth it to you.

I would price out Swan too! (Remember Swan for queen beds, Dolphin has doubles). Maybe give a call to their in house reservations team, they have family room deals that aren’t listed online. They also do various other discounts.

Just to add on about the Swan, they also have suites with 2 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms including a living room and dining area, I believe you need to call for prices and booking. It would be nice for your mom as the resort isn't spread out and you have easy access to BW and YC/BC areas.

Of the choices listed, I would pick either Poly/BC or Poly/BWV. I agree with others that SSR is just too spread out and to me looks like a typical apartment complex with no real atmosphere. AKL would be nice with the August weather however the 21s would be far removed from the fun of DS or EP "drinking around the world"...LOL.

I personally would not do a split stay of less than 5/5. For 6 nights, I would appeal to the 21s that being near EP would give them more access to boozy fun.

As a long shot, it would be even cheaper to do 3 rooms at a moderate like POFQ with boat access to DS and a small footprint for your mom. It's quaint and quiet if she is not staying at the parks all day.

Thanks for all the advice. I did not consider the spread-outness of Saratoga. I've never been there. We've stayed at the Swan before but I didn't know they had 2 bedroom suites. I'll definitely look into that. I agree that the BWV or BC is probably the best bet.

I have some questions to ask the 21 year olds. Thanks everyone!

I had to weigh in too! We took our daughter and my parents for her 21st in August omg 9 years ago lol. Like you we weighed all options. I understand your son wanting to do the Poly (love the Poly) but in the long run we did Boardwalk after all my research. We did a one bedroom and two studios BW view and for point rental it was amazing. Most of our time was spent in Epcot... drinking 'around the world' responsibly obviously lol. Being able to walk to Studios was great. The bus was easy drive to AK and MK. Your 21 year olds will have the added bonus of the skyliner. Although at Poly they have the monorail crawl.

We did 6 nights at BW and for a group trip I would think a split stay of 3 and 3 might be hard. But that is a choice only you can make. If doing split I would lean toward Epcot resort/Poly.

Good luck. You will have so so much fun.

Hey fellow Mass🕳️! When our twins turned 21 we got a Club room at WL but there were only four of us. We loved it. We did run into a little snag about drinking there, though, that I will warn you about. We arrived the day before their bday so they had not changed their licenses from “junior” licenses yet because that could only be done after their bday. And those licenses expired at midnight on their bday. Because of that, the club would not serve them on their birthday, calling it a “grey area”. Ran into same problem at the pool, too. Interestingly they were able to be served in Epcot, so technically that’s where they had their first legal drink. But they wound up being really nervous about it, though, not knowing if they were gonna get shut down again. It put a little damper on their 21st. I hope you all have better luck!

We are going to rent DVC points for a 2 BR villa (we have typically used David's but the DVC store is showing slightly lower prices).
Sounds like you've rented before, so you probably know this, but I'll mention it anyway:

DVC owners can book their home resort at 11 months ahead, and can book other resorts at 7 months. DVC owners cannot book prior to 11 months. So if you want to travel next summer, it's too early to book (although it's good to be thinking ahead).

Even when you are within 11 months, https://dvcrequest.com/ and https://dvcrentalstore.com/ can tell you what it would cost for a reservation, but that does not mean the days, resort and unit type you want will be available.

Even if you are within 11 months and the availability is there, that doesn't mean either of them has Owners who are willing and able to book the resie you desire.

And if one of them is charging Guests a lower price, that could mean that they are paying Owners a lower price. That could cause Owners to choose to work with the other one.

https://dvcrentalstore.com/ has been pushing Owners to make a resie with the points, and then they will rent it out as a confirmed resie. That works against you if Owners agree to this, because Owners will be using their points for a resie which is not likely to match your exact requirements.

I personally hate split stays, because I do not like to pack up my stuff and move. I also don't want to be "homeless" between checking out of the first resort and having my room ready at the second resort. You said that you like resort time between about noon and 3:00 pm. If you can't get into your new room, will you still be able to relax the way you want during that time period on your switch day? If you plan to spend that time at the hotel pool and you plan to stash bathing suits in a park locker during the morning, that's one thing. If you want to be in your room to rest during that time period, that's a different story. Sometimes people luck out, but usually a DVC room is not ready until after 4:00. Sometimes it's a lot after 4:00.

If you book a split stay you would be relying on getting 2 resies that work for you. But if you want to stay in a 2 bedroom at the Poly during the summer time, and one of your nights is Friday or Saturday, you're looking at 65 + 56 + 56 + 56 + 56 + 56 points if the cheapest view is available, and that's 345 points. Not every Owner has that many points they want to rent out. If you do a split stay, each part could be booked by different Owners with fewer points.

Thanks for the info on the owner aspect of renting points. Right now I am just looking at ballpark numbers to get a sense of how much it all might cost. I do realize that a split stay renting DVC points at both resorts will not be the easiest. Having rented before, I know that I need to have a couple different options that will work for us when that 11 month window opens. I've never used DVC rental store before, but looking into them they have two different ways of booking rental points, but not sure exactly what it all means. We've used David's twice and its been really easy to use. They have the "chat" option where an agent can basically tell you all of the resorts and room types that fit your dates. And finally, I've never done a split stay so I'm not exactly sure how the changeover day would go. Maybe we'd make it more of a resort day and not hit the parks? Pack a go-bag and hang around Resort 1 for a while, then head to Resort 2 and hang there? Hmmm. I'll have to do some more thinking about that.

That sounds like a great time, but with a bit of a snag there on the IDs. Fortunately my twins will actually be turning 21 in December of 2026 so their IDs should be updated (worst case they can use their passports). I don't want to go over Christmas because, while I'd definitely love to see WDW at the holidays, I think the crowds would be just too much. However, that's very good advice for anyone else considering the 21st b-day celebration.

Thank you so much for this! I think I can convince my son that Boardwalk is actually the better choice!

Again, thank everyone for your help, advice, and guidance. I showed all the replies to my wife (who is NOT on the DisBoards) and she was impressed with all the replies!!

Strong Poly/BC or Poly/BWV vote from me. Big celebratory trips call for the 'best' resorts, and for me that's walkability to parks and amenities - so those two options stand out quite a bit over your others to me.

Be ready to go at 11 months if renting points! You may already know this, but for a 2BR, you would be at the new Poly tower, not the original Polynesian. There are no DVC 2BR's at the OG Poly. You could do two connecting studios at the OG, though!

EPCOT would be great... during the day. If the birthday 'adults' are ready to turn it in at 9 PM, it would work out. I feel no matter where you stay, all roads will lead to DS.
