DAY 22 - Cocoa Beach - Ron Jon's Surf Shack - Port Canaveral - DIS meet

Today was another first for us, as we had a trip to St Augustine planned. Our first stop was at POR for breakfast. It was here that I realised I had forgotten to bring a camera :scared1:. With the demise of my Sony compact (which was always attached to my belt) I had completely forgotten to bring my DSLR, so it was a quick about turn to OKW. We finally got on the road at around 10:15 and headed out on I4 towards Daytona were we would join I95. The journey was uneventful until we had been travelling on I95 for about 10 miles. The traffic slowed and eventually ground to a halt :scared1:. We waited, moved a few yards and then waited again. Time was pressing on and we decided to turn around at Ormond Beach. Our original plans included driving down to Port Canaveral in the late afternoon to see the Disney Wonder depart, so now it would not be such of a rush. We headed south and made our way to Cocoa beach and a visit to the legendary Ron Jon surf shop. Our first and only other visit here was in 1993, so everything was different! For those of you who have yet to visit, Ron Jons is the world’s largest surf shop and is open 24 hours per day!. The shop has two levels and sells just about anything associated with the beach and surfing.

It was soon time to make our way back to Port Canaveral, as the ship was due to leave at around 5 o’clock. We had not eaten since breakfast and were now quite hungry. Glen Cheek Drive has quite a few restaurants that line the waterway and we were spoiled for choice, but eventually settled for Fish Lips. We chose an outdoor table on the upper deck and browsed through the extensive menu.
Emma: 6 Jumbo Chicken Wings with fries + The Trilogy + Diet Coke
Sue: Fish n Chips + Donnas’ Apple Pie + Mojito cocktail + Diet Coke
Nigel: Seafood Skewers + The Trilogy + Bud Light + Diet Coke

One word of warning!............not sure if it was the time of year, but we were constantly plagued by tiny black flies and this unfortunately detracted from the quality of the food. Next time I would choose an inside table!.
First to glide past was the Carnival Sensation; this is owned by Carnival Cruise Lines and is very impressive.

They reckon on saving the best till last and true to form, we were greeted with a blast of “When you wish upon a star” as the Disney Wonder came into view. We were able to pick out our balcony on the starboard side, where we had spent 4 wonderful nights – almost one year ago, to the day!.

After waving a ‘Bon-Voyage’ to all of those lucky passengers onboard, we started the drive back to OKW, where Wayne had arranged the second DIS meet of our stay. On our way back along 528 Beachline Expressway, I noticed that the fuel gauge was getting rather low, (I reckon it was running on fumes!) so a detour was made, not sure where, but finally stumbled upon a 7-11 gas station, where I quenched the Ford Explorers thirst, to the sum of $25. We arrived back at OKW and headed to the main pool area where the DIS meet was in full swing. I did not take any pics (sorry!) but had a good night chatting with other fellow DIS’ers.
As we were about to call it a day (around 11:45), the heavens opened and the remaining people: myself, Martin (burt) , Wayne, Karen & Matt, took shelter under the parasols until the rain eased off. Some 90 minutes later, we were still waiting for it to ease off and since I had the car nearby, acted as Taxi driver and transported the gang, back to their rooms. I finally got to bed at around 1:30

RETURN TO TRIP INDEX

Great photos again - love the one of you waving at the ship.

We stayed at cocoa beach near ron johns on our first trip as a couple in 97 - stayed at fawlty towers motel for 1 night.

DH chose it for the name, all I remember is it was pink! Just had a search and it's still there and still pink.

What a great day !! We love driving down to Port Canaveral to see the Disney Wonder .. but only if we're going to be getting on it a few days later (otherwise it's too depressing :rotfl2::rotfl2:)

I look forward to your next installment ::yes::

thank goodness you remembered to go back for the camera, what fab shots of the cruise ships and the amazing food, looks so delish. glad you made the dis meet.

I know what you mean, it was rather sad to see it sail past and not being onboard, but the blow was softened knowing that almost 12 months further on and we will be waving to the people in Fish Lips from the deck of the Disney Dream! pirate::yay::yay::yay:

thank you for the brilliant photos of the surf shop. sounds like you had a different type of day but really good and ending it off with a dis meet, no better way.
