..................................

I have made a "concoction" using flaxseed oil and protein poweder. I used vanilla flavored power and oj. It wasn't "great" tasting but, it wasn't bad. I do feel better when I use them regularly.

I started using a supplement instead of the seeds or oil. As for protein, I cheat and buy Muscle Milk Lite, in Cookies and Cream. My Dr. is the one that recommended taking them and using the supplements.

-------------------------

Was there a specific brand of protein powder you used? And - excuse me if this is a dumb question - but does the flaxseed "oil" give the drink an "oily" taste/texture?

I like Nature's Plus Spiru-Tein the best. It does have a slight oily texture (the flaxseed oil). That's why I use orange juice to mix with it. It helps "cut" the "oily" taste. I also mix the supplements that come in capsules.

Once the final determination is made on my digestive/intestinal issues, I need to go on a very high calorie diet (I currently weigh 84 lbs.), so I did a search on the internet - which led me to high calorie beverages and recipes, most of which include the protein powder and/or flaxseed.. :confused3 I already drink 6 Boost a day (per the doctor's orders), but that has only been "maintaining" my weight - not adding anything to it..

You may take a look at the regular Muscle Milk, then. I don't remember the calories, but my DD drinks it more. She is hypoglaucemic and drinks it to help get her through the day and through cheer. Off topic, but I go for the lite because I'm supposed to be low carb even though I'm in my correct weight range. My Dr. is a believer in low carb for fibromyalgia and migraines. The migraine thought came from a study of children with Epilepsy that did better going low carb. They say mine are a type of seizure even though I don't have Epilepsy.:confused3 I fail miserably bad this time of year, but I'm trying until the food engorging really begins in a couple of weeks.....

Wow! Do they think Crohn's or something like that?

I make my son smoothies with yogurt, vanilla protein powder, banana and strawberry. He's not a good eater and needs some extras. It is really tasty though.

typically use vanilla protein powder myself, and mix it into a shake..... 8oz skim milk, scoop of protein powder, handful of frozen berries (strawberries, blueberries, etc), and maybe a few tablespoons of plain yogurt.... toss in a blender and mix.

brand I've stuck with after trying out a bunch is Optimum Nutrition.... I've had good luck with a site called dpsnutrition.net for good prices/variety; but definately check around to make sure you get the best price...

I like Designer Whey Protein Powders.

I recently found this recipe in Clean Eating Magazine and while they are kind of messy to make they are yummy!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bars

4 scoops Chocolate Protein Powder
1/2 cup flax meal
4 Tbsp. natural peanut butter
1/4 c. water
sweetener to taste (I use Agave Nectar, but if weight is not an issue, I'd use honey)

Mix all the ingredients together well. If it's too thick add a little more water, but be careful they get sticky very easily. If they get sticky add a little more flax meal.

It says it makes 4 bars, but I found them to be too big, so I make them into 8 round "cookies". I put them between wax or parchment paper and then in a plastic bag and freeze them. Take them out of the freezer the morning that you want to eat them. I like this cuz I can take them out one at a time.

Believe me, they look like a cow pie, but they are delicious!

At this point, not Crohn's, but a pretty long list of other things.. I'll have an endoscopy on Tuesday and if that doesn't provide any concrete answers further testing will be required..

I've always been "thin", but never this thin - and it's getting pretty scary.. Even my knees touching when I'm sleeping hurt because it's basically "bone touching bone".. Ideally I should weigh at least 115 lbs..

I am so sorry you are struggling this way

You may try a GNC store before you buy much. Around here, they take anything back even after it is opened. So they tell us to try it, and return it if we don't like it. The time to go is the 1st week of the month, if you haven't been. If you get a gold card, it will save you quite a bit over the year.

C.Ann, can you eat peanut butter? It's a decent source of protein and has LOTS of calories. There was a day when I struggled to maintain my weight. I was just naturally skinny as a rail. I ate lots of peanut butter.

C. Ann, I hope your doctors are able to help and you are feeling better soon.

You may want to look into the Clean Eating Diet. It's very natural and has little to no processed foods. Lots of proteins fruits, veggies and whole grains, although I'm not sure how well you can tolerate gluten - I know lots of people with celiac's disease.

I also like this website....

www.danispies.com

She has a lot of clean healthy recipes that are quick and easy.

Good luck to you and keep us posted with how you make out.

being a gastric bypass patient, i'm quite familiar with protein powders and flaxseed. i eat a peanut butter called "naturally more" which includes egg white, flaxseed oil and flaxseed, it's very good. there is a more expensive version called "power butter", but i refuse to pay 6.00 for 16 oz of peanut butter. the naturally more is $2.82 at wal-mart. i also eat atkins bars. they actually taste halfway decent. i used to use elite whey rich chocolate protein powder, but it tastes different to me now and i can't stomach it anymore. i have friends who swear by body fortress protein powder, which you can get at wal-mart. also, you can try unjury, which is a tasteless protein powder that can be added to anything. unjury.com. i'm not sure of the price, i've never looked. there is also stallone (yes, sylvester stallone) protein pudding. it's a little pricey, but you can get it at GNC. it's not GREAT tasting, but ok. i LOVE power crunch bars, but they're too high in calories for me. they'd be great for you though, and they taste pretty good-like a wafer cookie. i get those at dpsnutrition.com for $13.95 a box.

Thanks.. I'll check out those sites.. Any port in a storm, right? :)
