2014 Grand Floridian Resort & Villas FAQ: Vacationing in Grand Style!

Hi Everyone! My husband and I are staying at the Grand in December with our 3 year old daughter. We are so excited! It's been 14 years since I've stayed at the GF, so I am thrilled about finally staying again, especially around the holidays! I've been looking at the rooms on touring plans. Has anyone stayed in Sago Key? My daughter loves the monorail, and these rooms seem to look out onto the monorail and some of the lagoon, but they are still considered garden view. Any input? I am leery of staying in Boca Chica because the pool can be loud and I do not want a room with a view of the pool house. Thanks!

I think I was told that Big Pine has the views with the pool house.

I need some opinions, please!

We currently have a late-ish breakfast reservation at WCC one morning during our trip. This is supposed to be one of our "lazy" days - get up late, go eat, and then go swim and enjoy adult beverages by the pool. Now that we've switched from WL to GF, I've been thinking that it would make sense to cancel WCC and make reservations for GFC instead. DH thinks we should keep WCC, though, because "we've never been there for breakfast." But we've never eaten at GFC at all! And we will be going to AP for dinner one night, so it's not like we won't have a reason to visit WL...

Honestly, the banana bread french toast on WCC's menu is what's keeping me from making the switch. It just sounds so good! But good enough to deal with the hassle of getting over to WL just for breakfast..? I don't know!

What would YOU do?

Hi Blue and MaggiesMomNJ. I have known Richard for many years. He was driving by himself until recently to NH for vacation every year. He always had a kind word for my Mom when she was with us. He is very sweet. I did see the YouTube video and how he became the person to help the brides.

Looking forward to seeing all my CM friends there in 3 weeks from tomorrow.

That really is something about Richard driving to NH until recently..he certainly is young at heart! :goodvibes What nice memories that you must have visiting with your mom... I havent seen the YouTube video..yet...but now I am curious...and am looking foward to seeing it...

I have had 3rd floor GV and 1st floor TPV than 1st floor GV but same lagoon side room.(I posted pics on poly thread)

3rd floor is nice because high views always good. I never thought I would like patios but they are actually nice without the railings.

2nd floor doesn't have a balcony BUT you would have easiest way to get to lounge.

Poly is only lounge with its own bathroom which is nice if leaving or arriving and don't have a room. (3rd floor lounge area)

Dd and I got our lunch on day at CC's then brought it back to lounge. At noon we had the space, view and all those free drinks to ourselves.

She also got tonga toast one morning to-go and had that in the lounge with fruit and drinks from the lounge

We love Tambu lounge. Great chicken wings! Just getting a drink and killing time for an hour is so nice. (Lapu Lapu anyone??)

The views of the other resorts at any time and especially of the castle is very disney magic princess:

I do like to ride the boats at 9-10 pm and watch fireworks or ewp

They have chocolate covered almonds in the afternoon some days so watch for them.... Yummy:)

We like to take bus back to cr sometimes and have the excuse to shop or snack there too. We enjoy trying all the different cupcakes at QS's:p

I think the "special" in the lounge is one of my favs. ::yes::

Besides gf is only a stop on the monorail, a quick walk on a beautiful path or a short boat ride away!

Oh and Steve has a copy of the lounge menu on tikimanpages.com

Many thanks Trish..I think that you are a true Poly princess in our midst...:thumbsup2 Heading over to check out the pics after I finish this post...

It's divine. A good southern staple. I've eaten it in at least 4 different states each with a different twist and have my own recipe. Definitely worth a try.

Had it at the GF Cafe..and it was delicious!

Good know you aren't "leaving us"!

I don't have an AP but sometimes wish I did, because those 35% discounts are about gone!

Thanks for your kind words my friend! As for the AP...we do find it a good value between the room discount offers..and of course the shopping discount! ;)

I always thought the same thing that the BWI decor very closely resembled the GF....now they don't match at all, other than both are very unappealing, IMO...

Yes, I think the BWI decor is very mish-mosh....nothing like I thought it would be (but then again, neither is the GF). I am very interested to see what they do to the BC and YC.....it will be very disappointing if that refurb follows what they've done to the last few resorts ...

I'm with you on missing the Grand .....wish I was headed there soon.

While I am not loving the new GF decor...I dont dislike it..I just expected more whimsy...and a bit more Victorian themeing...

As for the BWI... What the heck!!!!!!!!!!! Those rooms were were so lovely... Maxie and I both loved our room on our last stay there...somewhat because if was so GFish...lol...I think I made up a new word!! :upsidedow

As for their lounge..omg..that new carpet makes dizzy...Don't see a stay there any time in our future either...You hear that Maxie!!!!

Maybe..hopefully ...the BC will be a pleasant surprise! I always miss the GF when I am not there..10 signs you are addicited to Disney??? lol....

Hello everyone! Hope you all are enjoying the beginning of summer. I can't believe it's only one month now until we are home again. Can't wait.

One month!!!! :dance3: Woohoo....

I've been reading the forum forever but have yet to post! I was there in January and the concierge said the pool closes at midnight but let me know they don't lock the gate with a wink wink. Sounds like they are keeping them open 24/7 on the down low. HTH!

Welcome!!! :goodvibes I did hear the same pool info...:thumbsup2

Welcome to you too!! :goodvibes What a wonderful time to visit the GF..in all of its holiday finery :santa:...If your DD is a monorail fan..that I think that Sago would be a great choice...and yes those rooms that face the back/woods side of Sago are GV..I would just be sure to request on your ressie thru CRO monorail view..another option would be Conch Key..The rooms on the outer section of the building that faces the marina..again considered GV...also have a monorail view if I am not mistaken...

I need some opinions, please!

What would YOU do?

What a perfect kind of lazy day! :thumbsup2 WCC and GFC are two very different breakfast experiences...WCC has lots of antics..and an overall party atmosphere..while GF Cafe..a fave of ours..is much more of a serene one... Just something to consider...Both have very good breakfasts IMO...no skillet at GFC tho....just individual options....

If traveling over to the WL is a concern..its super easy..but takes a bit of time..maybe 25-30 minutes in total... from the GF..just take the monorail over to the MK...and head over to the WL boat dock...easy to find..and a very pretty boat trip along the waterways...:goodvibes

k&a&c'smom APs are usually a good value for us because we "try" and visit the world more that once per year.. .;) and I am always trying to come up with other reasons why they are a good value...lol...the shopping discount... lets see I am sure there is something else...lol...Actually the room discounts are a nice perk...:thumbsup2 But as you said...not a good value for all....We have taken trips where we spend most of our time being resort dwellers..and for those trips they really are not...

pas You are so funny ..not to mention the sweetest GF groupie ever!!!

~ So as of today..still Poly princesses...didn't even try to check for availability... I am intrigued..for now...lol...

Hi to all of my fellow GF fans!!! Candy ahcupcake wishes..and all the rest of the groupies out there...

Hope that everyone had a terrific Tuesday..:earsgirl: preppy GF Gal who is thinking about wearing a grass skirt!! lol...

Glad you are able to make it back to the GF :wizard:. You are going to have a great time, the GF is very festive during the holidays :santa:. I agree with BlueSkies that Sago would be a great choice if your DD loves the monorail.

I think I was told that Big Pine has the views with the pool house.

You are correct, BPK has the "less desirable" pool house views.

BC is the other building I may try and request. I am confusing myself!

BC is another great one (actually BPK and BC are my two favorites for GV). BC is located right next to BPK and overlooks the courtyard pool, which is a very pretty view :cloud9:.

We've never eaten breakfast at either place, but we do love WCC for dinner. Like BlueSkies posted, getting to the WL really isn't all that bad and taking the monorail to MK and then hopping on the boat to WL would be easy :thumbsup2. Good luck with your decision.

Ya, too much of the whimsy is being taken out of the rooms :(. I agree about the BWI lounge carpet....not sure what Disney was thinking on that one . I also thought the BWI rooms resembled the GF rooms, now they are totally different from each other.

And thank you Mickeynut for looking into it for me!! :)

You're very welcome :). I'm sorry I gave a definite answer when it's not so definite .

Hi! Me again :) I read somewhere that every room at the GF gets a nightly turndown service and wondered if this was true and what time roughly this happens? I expect concierge have this service but not sure on everyone else.

Thanks

:-). I can't tell you much about GF but wanted to wish you a great trip!

I take care of my sick mom so I understand the importance and value of going to Disney for a break from reality.
I do have some tips:
1. Ensure that any meds taken do not have photosensitive issues.
2. Take breaks and lots of pictures. Those memories are priceless.
3. My mom takes blood thinners so she can not eat certain foods. I always put the "allergy" on our ADR and at QS locations I ask to speak with the chef. Everyone has gone above and beyond to assist my mom. She has even had meals specially prepared for her. We usually wait an extra 5-10 mins to speak with the chefs. But everything has always been in a timely manner. If time is of the essence for you, at TS request the check shortly after ordering.
4. I've requested that my room be specially cleaned. No Lysol products and I've never had an issue.
5. I've always felt that wdw did their best to make our vacations good. If you encounter an issue talk to a CM.

Give your parents all the love you can give. I've always wanted to take my dad to wdw but he got sick and recently passed away. Give your dad a hug from me.
All the best!
Feel better!

Thank you.

Luckily my mom has no diet restrictions except for her 3 food allergies. The on,y she has to do is be careful of carbs and sugar because she is pre diabetic and has been for a while (metabolic syndrome....I think) But I have almost 20 food allergies so we'll be talking to the chef every time anyway so if something changes with restrictions at least the chef will already be coming! Lol

We've done the special allergy cleaning before because I have such severe allergies (including chemical allergies) and asthma but I found for me, my symptoms weren't any better with the special cleaning than without it. I don't know if maybe the cleaning has changed in about 2 years so maybe I'll request it anyway....who knows...maybe it will help everyone....worsted case scenario is that it just doesn't work

This entire trip is basically revolving around relaxing. That's why we are only planning on going to MK for one day. And we will definitely be taking it easy anyway because I'm not supposed to spend too much time outside in the heat between about 1-6 because of the heat (affects my asthma, heart condition, and hypoglycemia). But otherwise, when we are at POR we plan on hanging out at the pool, going miniature golfing and maybe visiting other resorts. And that portion of the trip is when we are going to MK. During our 2 days at GF we plan on just enjoying the resort for both days. Again....pool, boat rentals, enjoying our balcony, and just people watching (one of my favorite things to do...lol)

I just can't wait to get to our happy place. And we've never stayed on POR (only POFQ) or GF so I'm really excited to explore 2 new resorts!

Sorry ahead of time...this is going to be long:

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. My mom is almost done with radiation treatments....only 9 left to go!! So hopefully it does it's job and got rid of everything.

And my grandma got good news too....well as good as it can be. Sounds like her oral medications are doing it's job and the cancer has not spread or gotten any worse. It's metastatic and at 83 and they decided it wasn't worth going through more intense treatments. We are visiting them before we go to Disney because that was the main reason for the trip to begin with. But it's going to be a tough visit with them...which is why we are going to a disney AFTER we see them. We will need it.

I'm so happy they got good news because I recently spent 40+ days in the hospital since May 1st over three different Hospitalizations and my health has continued to slowly get worse no matter what we do. So this trip is extremely important for all of us.

But onto the responses:

1. I didn't think there was really a bad view but I just wanted to check. So sounds like we should be good with what we have which is awesome because the difference can probably pay for 2 days of QS lunches.

2. How much is the pontoon boat rental? That sounds awesome but we do really have to watch our expenses this trip. We spend a lot of money on meals because we do at least 1 TS per day because of my food allergies and I am in heaven to not have to cook and clean for 5 nights so we like to do a couple of splurge meals which means we usually have to cut back on other add-ons if expensive.

3. And it sounds like I can have the chocolate it delivered before our Citricos dinner at 7:20 our first night? I just want to make sure it's a surprise for them. I'm addition to the chocolate, I was thinking of getting them a cheese plate as an appetizer for before our reservation because they both LOVE cheese plates and since we have a fridge not concerned about not finishing. Can I call ahead for both things and specify a delivery time or can I only order it once we get to the hotel.

4. And I got lucky yesterday and got a 7:20 reservation at Citricos to replace our 8pm ADR so we should definitely get to see the fireworks that night. And do I have to call to add a celebration to the reservation? Last year we went to Citricos on my bday and this year I want to celebrate my parents anniversary during that meal because it's our only signature meal right now and I want that to be the meal where we celebrate their anniversary (their anniversary is 5 days later)

We've done the speed boats before but thank you for reminding me they don't go very fast. I didn't think they did but my dad likes them so he and I usually go...I'm just happy we don't max out on the weight...combined we're like only 275lbs right now. Last time we did the speed boats it was about 7 years ago at CSR. So I'm happy to do it again.

And I agree about sitting in the lobby. I LOVE people watching. I graduated last year with a psychology and social behavior degree and my major made me enjoy people watch he even more! Lol

Yeah it didn't look like the resort was that spread out. I mean, we've stayed at 3 of the values and 3 of the moderates so we know about distance from the main building! We'll be happy with anything. I just need my allergy free Mickey waffles every morning! I usually get at least 2 orders because I keep the extras in the fridge about snack on them at the resort all day. They are good even cold!

I really wanted to send my parents to V&A to celebrate their anniversary but they would absolutely kill me if I did that because of the cost! Lol

5. Also, are the cabanas on the beach worth it. Has anyone here gotten one before? We would only do a half day but I am concerned with the possibility of afternoon rain because it is August. I just don't want it to end up being a waste of money. I was thinking we would do it on our last full day in Disney. I would just like to know others experience with it.

6. Also, is there anyway to get a second fridge for the room or is there only space for the one that is already in there? The second fridge would be for medical reasons. I'm on TPN at night and my doctors will not give me the okay to go 6 nights without it yet and won't give me an answer until the week we are leaving. The problem is, I would need to put my TPN in the fridge and it would probably be 3 bags of TPN (it's 1000mL per bag....if you've ever seen a bag of normal saline in the hospital each one is that size) and also have to refrigerate the vitamins I need to add in. My concern is just fitting all of that plus food and drinks in the fridge because technically the TPN is NOT supposed to be not he same shelf as any food or drinks and I know the fridges aren't that big but we are going to have to store some food as well for my allergies.

Sorry about all the questions. But thank you for taking the time to answer. So very helpful!

So excited for the GF....only like 53 days until we get there!!:cool1:

SOOPAFLY-every room receives turndown service at night. That's another reason why I love the GF. I know that we have had turndown service as early as 6:30 pm and as late as 8 pm. I requested early turndown and early housekeeping. The request was noted and we were accommodated. I find that the GF goes out of its way to make their guests happy!

Excellent, I didn't know you could request early / late turndown service so that's cool. Really looking forward to stayng there now, never wanted to before as we are Poly people but sometimes, it's the little extra touches that make all the difference :) many thanks for the reply.

You are very welcome...glad to help :goodvibes.

I'm glad your mom is almost done with radiation treatments. Sending good thoughts that she gets through the next 9 treatments ok and everything is gone once the treatments are over :grouphug:.

Also glad your grandma got good news....hope she continues to get better .

Sounds like this trip is exactly what you need. I hope you are doing better after so many hospital stays. Staying at the GF will be very relaxing as the surroundings are beautiful with plenty of places to just sit and take everything in :cloud9:.

I'll try to answer some of your questions as best I can:

1. Yes, having a GV will give you a great view :).

2. We've never done the pontoon boats, but I looked it up and the cost is $45 for 30 minutes. If you go to the first page of this thread, scroll down just a little and right after the resort map, there is a table of contents with different links. Click on "recreation" and that will give you great descriptions of the pools, watercraft, etc. :goodvibes.

3. We've never ordered anything special/extra for the room, but I know there are others here that have done it, so hopefully they will be able to give you some input how far in advance you can order :flower3:.

4. Congrats on getting an early ADR for Citricos :thumbsup2. The best way, IMO, is to call and have the celebration added to your ADR.

5. We've never gotten a cabana, but I think they look awesome ::yes::. I think those who have rented them would probably recommend getting one (especially in August). The information on the cabanas is included in the "recreation" link I mentioned above (it's actually right before the pontoon boat information).

6. I can't answer about getting an extra fridge, but hopefully someone else will be able to help with that :).

I also wanted to say that if you are used to the size of the values and mods, the GF is no where near that spread out. There are some outer buildings closer to certain areas, but nothing is far away.

Sorry I couldn't answer all of your questions, but hope I helped a little with some of them. It won't be long before you are checking into the GF.....53 days will go fast :wizard:.

Really looking forward to stayng there now, never wanted to before as we are Poly people but sometimes, it's the little extra touches that make all the difference :)

I'm sure you are going to love the GF :goodvibes. The Poly is our favorite resort and while I wasn't sure how I'd like the GF prior to my first stay, I am so glad I gave it a try because it now ranks right up there with the Poly for me. There's just something about the Poly that it will always be my favorite, but the GF runs a close second and is a great alternative if the Poly isn't available :wizard:.

I always thought the same thing that the BWI decor very closely resembled the GF....now they don't match at all, other than both are very unappealing, IMO :(.

Yes, I think the BWI decor is very mish-mosh....nothing like I thought it would be (but then again, neither is the GF). I am very interested to see what they do to the BC and YC.....it will be very disappointing if that refurb follows what they've done to the last few resorts :guilty:.

I'm with you on missing the Grand :sad1:.....wish I was headed there soon.
 Regarding the refurb...you put into words exactly how I feel about both resorts...

pas You are so funny ..not to mention the sweetest GF groupie ever!!!
 The Poly CL evening punch is reason enough to stay CL there...IMO and YOU are so sweet, totally making me

:wave2:Hello everyone! Hope you all are enjoying the beginning of summer. :goodvibes I can't believe it's only one month now until we are home again. Can't wait!!
One month

I need some opinions, please!

I haven't had the banana bread French toast at WCC, DH and I ate an early breakfast there...we will not return. The food was okay, just loud there....I love WL though. As for GF café :worship: We had a window seat, and the food was divine, reasonably priced and the service was awesome! :goodvibes That's what I would do.....

Happy Wednesday all!!! We made smores last night, I have never made my kiddos smores..what a bad mom I am :lmao: They loved them!! So I reminded them of the marshmallow roasts every night at WDW :cool1:

Excellent, I didn't know you could request early / late turndown service so that's cool. Really looking forward to stayng there now, never wanted to before as we are Poly people but sometimes, it's the little extra touches that make all the difference :) many thanks for the reply.

Hope you love GF, we gave it a try last summer, as a split stay and was surprised at how much we loved it. So happy to be returning this August for a longer stay. You get those lovely choc squares with turn down too. We came home with a bag full, lol. And all rooms have robes. :lovestruc
