2012 Wine and Dine Half questions

I'd really love to do this event next year but I have questions. First of all, how much is the entry fee and extras, like the after party? When will registration open? I've never done a half before, and my pace is nowhere close to race pace so I plan to start training soon. I was thinking of using one of Jeff Galloway's beginner plans, like the Tink half since it's a 23 week plan. That should get me close to the date to start his Wine and Dine plan. So, should I do the 23 week plan then start over with the 18 week plan? What about training after I finish 23 weeks but before I start the 18 week plan? Also, what are your thoughts on training on a treadmill? Is that ok or does it really need to be done outside? I've tried running in the past and was never happy with my progress, but after reading more on it, I'm pretty sure I was trying to do too much too soon. I just really want to make sure I do it right this time. Thanks for any help!

I'm wondering about this as well -- posted something in another section on DIS and was directed here. :)

I am (super optimistically!) thinking I might be interested in running the Wine and Dine half marathon in 2012. I found a program from this year's race on Disney's site that shows the 2012 dates as Sept 28-29. It says to go to rundisney.com for more info, but I can't find any there about the race next year.

My questions...
- When does registration open?
- Cost?
- How fast will these races generally fill up?

I'd also love to hear the answers to your other questions! :goodvibes

I'm right there with you on the optimism part. I've only done a 5k in the past. That's why I know I have to start training now!

Wine and Dine was my first half and I loved it.

Last registration opened in February and I think I payed around $145.
My parents bought the after party tickets but I don't remember what they cost.

I didn't really use a running plan I just added some distance when I would go out for my runs. I hear the Galloway plan are good and my dad is thinking about using it when do the Wine and Dine again.

I don't have any answers to your questions, but I did want to say that my DH and I are planning to run this race as well! I've done the Princess 1/2 twice, but this time I want to do one that he and I can do together! I'm really looking forward to it...I think running through the parks at night is going to be really, really cool! I can't wait for registration to open!!

Hi! I can help you I think. I have never been a runner...ever. Last year, I went to Disney the morning they were doing the Princess 1/2. I decided I wanted to do it. When I got home, I ended up signing up for the Wine and Dine. It was late Feb, early March. I started with the c25k and moved on to Galloways beginner program. You could do it that way or start with Galloway and go through the 5k, Bridge to 10K and then do half training. I personally do not like the treadmill, but others do. You will find out which you prefer once you start. I live in South Florida. Training for the Wine and DIne in the summer down here was BRUTAL. But I guess training in Canada during the winter could be just as bad ;)

A runner is given entry to the after-party, it is included. I don't remember about spectator prices though. I had a great time. I had a few issues but they were specific to me and not a reflection on the race really. I learned a few things and would be happy to share more if you are interested. Just let me know. But again, I had a great time. The people I met on the W&D thread are all terrific and I hope to get together with them next year.

HTH,

Michele

Hi, Michele!

Yes, I would love to know anything you wish to share about what you learned your first time out.

I can help with your treadmill question :)

Personally I hate the treadmill for long runs. I just get BORED.

Also, the treadmill is softer than asphalt. You're not running into wind or pushing against the air -- which sounds funny but is true. And its just a different feel all around. I'd strongly suggest trying to do as much training as possible outside, particularly for the long runs.

When you are on the treadmill, it is a good idea to bump up the incline a little bit. Anywhere from a 1.0 – 3.0% incline is ideal. This better mimics outside conditions.

As for doing the Tink training program and then going back and starting the Wine and Dine program, that probably isn't something that I'd personally do. If you think it will help you, then by all means, go for it. But a half training program is all about adding distance, and what you're looking for is getting faster. I'd concentrate on speeding up until the Wine and Dine training starts.

Again, seriously, just my personal opinion! I think the most important thing is finding something that you'll be able to stick with. I've done 4 half marathons and have yet to finish a training program! So if you prefer training on a treadmill and doing two half programs, go for it :thumbsup2

PS. I  Galloway. I hate walking fast but can't run a lot at one time so I've found his intervals to be very helpful. I started with 10 seconds run/50 seconds walk but now am up to 1 minute run/1 minute walk. Eventually I'd love to just run, but I always seem to be in training for something and for me getting distances in has been more important than increasing the amount of time I run.

Thanks! I appreciate your input. I've decided to begin with Galloway's 8 week conditioning program, then do the half program. That will get me close to 3 months from the Wine and Dine. At that point, I will work on speed and hopefully I'll have a better idea of how to do that by then. I did day 1 of the conditioning program this morning, and now I'm concerned that the conditioning program is too easy. I still think I'm gonna stick with this plan though because everything I've read indicates that starting out easy is the best way to set yourself up for success. I just hope 11 months is enough time for success.

Check (google) out Couch to 5K.....C25K

I used it to get started and really liked it. Most importantly, I never got hurt by doing too much, too soon.

Good luck...
