I know this has been asked before, but the time is getting closer to when we can fax in our request for a loop/site. (Has anyone had success with this?)

DH would like me to ask about recommended sites in these two loops - specifically which sites are shaded -

The right side of 2000 looks shaded from youtube videos we have seen. Is 1514 a good site? The videos we have veiwed don't show the site markers clearly. We kind of compare the Bing Map to what we are watching...

Any rec's?

Here is a thread you might find helpful

But for the 2000 loop I think the lower 2000 numbers are better. We stayed at site 2005 (in 2008) and site 2003 (in 2010) -- tent camping -- and both times were glad we got the sites we did. The canal is behind it with the cabins on the other side. The path to the Comfort Station is across the loop road and one can see the Comfort Station from the sites. The internal sites had more traffic from people going to the CS. The lower numbers also had more trees and more area around the pads.

A note about the photos in this thread:

When we went this year (end of March first of April) we had a heavy (2+ in.) storm on our first full day that had been preceeded by storms before we arrived. Many of the sites around the Comfort Station that is further into the loop were surrounded by water. I was wondering why we didn't see the tetherball since my DSs loved the tetherball at the beach, then I realized it was because that area was a pond when we were there. Some sites had pad and then water around it.

The canal also had a good bit more water in it than the picture in this thread.

Anyway, we liked the low 2000s of the 2000 loop. Now it seems like our "home" at FW so I'm not sure if we'd ask for that loop again or try 1500 (which we drove through before we left and also seemed nice.)

site 1511 was very nice and roomy, backs up to the canal so there was always a breeze.

Hello SimbaKY ......... I hope the attached pictures will help you! We just returned this past Sunday from a great week at Fort Wilderness! When we stay in a partial hook-up sites we always request site 1513 or 1511. (1500 is our favorite loop!) Our first choice is 1513 but both sites are excellent. I also included a picture of the canal that is directly behind both of those sites. I believe that 1513 has more shade then 1511 but I don't think you would be disappointed with either site! Also 1510 is on the outside of the loop and it is a great site as well!

I hope you and your family have a very safe and enjoyable trip at Fort Wilderness!

Hello flash828 ....... Thanks for your comment about the pictures!
We have been vacationing at Fort Wilderness for over 35+ years and have always been very fortunate to be able to get the loop we requested and many times the actual site. When I have faxed my request I always include the following sentence in my letter. (It was listed on the sample fax letter that was posted on the Disboards.)

"I am writing about our campsite request but I do understand that these are only requests and cannot be guaranteed".

The CM and Managers at Fort Wilderness have 'always' been 'very' helpful in doing everything they can do to honor our request!

I hope things will work out for you and your family and you will be able to get the site and or loop you request! Good Luck!

Thanks datgrt@fw!
We will provide a report of our site success as well as the required Fort Wilderness vacation report!:thumbsup2

Hey... these photos are great. We are heading to FW in November and tenting it this year. We are trying to decide between 2000 and 1500. They both have their pros and cons. My questions to you guys are:

Is the canal area in 1500 part of a dog walk?

how far is the 1511 (and the other canal sites) from the CS?

Do you feel really that far away from everything in loop 2000?

We did the online check in a few days before we arrived and requested the 1500 loop. We checked in on the 19th of June about 11 am and was put in the 2000 loop. We asked about the 1500 loop and was told it had been filled up for a while. When we were given our site number, we drove around the 2000 loop and found several sites that were empty and when back to check in to inquire about getting another site, one closer to the comfort station. We were given another site closer to the comfort station but a few sites that we asked about, we were told that we couldn't have those sites but wasn't given a reason.

The canal bordering the 1500 loop is the same one that borders the 1600 and 1800 loops, so the area where people walk dogs is the same area. There are no signs saying where the dog walk area ends, so people do occasionally walk dogs along the canal next to the 1500 loop. But not many.

Have you ever tried Shan-Man's Google maps?

Here's a screen cap showing the walking distance you asked about:

As you can see, 1511 is one of the furthest sites from the comfort station, but it still is not a very long walk.

Yes... I was just on the google earth site.... that really does help put everything in perspective. Still can't decide between the two loops, there are sites in both that look really nice. I think my DH and I will sit down with the FW google earth site and decide. I like 2000, he likes 1500. Hmmm, who will win?

It's pretty simple really. The 1500 loop is in a much better location than the 2000 loop, so for that reason alone, I always request it. But, there is nothing wrong with the 2000 loop. So, there is no winner or loser. They are both nice.

Have fun.
