Think I already know the answers, but wanted to reach out to the experts before I do something stupid.

1 - If I make a booking for X nights, but then decide that due to whatever reason, I need to drop a night at the beginning or end, am I correct that I will lose the entire reservation and have to hope that there is still availability for the rest of the nights/nobody else scoops the nights while I'm on the phone with MS?

2 - If the reservation is in my 2014 Use Year, but I have to borrow a few points from 2015 (and then realize that I have to drop a night or two, as per above), the borrowed points don't go back into 2015, and I would have to bank them as 2014, correct?

Thanks for the always helpful advice.

Not sure on #1, but for #2, you would actually be banking your 2014 points, as the borrowing 2015 points is irrevocable. While this doesn't matter as long as you have 2014 and 2015 points, let's say you had no 2014 points, and borrowed 100 from 2015 for a 5-night stay. If you cancelled one night, you couldn't bank the 20 points leftover and would have to use them or lose them before the 2015 UY began.

MS can modify the arrival/departure date without needing to cancel and rebook the entire reservation.

If the modified reservation requires fewer points, MS should return current UY points first (2014 UY points in your example) back to your account.

If they returned borrowed points back to your account, they can't be banked and would expire at the end of the UY the reservation was to take place if unused.

Thanks to the both of you.

We have enough 2014 points to get us a week (which we'll definitely keep), but would need to borrow from 2015 for the few extra nights which may or may not be needed. If I'm able to bank the equivalent number of 2014 points to the 2015's which I will have to borrow (if I have to drop a couple of nights) then my worries are alleviated.

I typically book extra nights before I decide on my final dates. I've never had a problem dropping nights at either the beginning or the end of the reservation.

One issue to watch is if you drop nights 30 days or less before arrival. They become holding account points and can only be used to rebook 60 days or less before the new trip arrival date. And they can't be banked.
