I'm thinking of buying a DSLR - 1st time for me. I will use the camera for scenic, matches, family and widlife pictures.

I'm considering the Nikon D70s or the Canon 250 and I'm looking for your views.

Also, if I purchase in the US how will the different voltage effect the battery charger - where should I try in Orlando?

Thanks in advance

There is no Canon 250. There is a Canon 350 which I think a better camera than D70s due to its far-cleaner high ISO capability. However, you may want to think twice about the Rebel 350 because it's really small so it may not be comfortable in your hand. (it's ridiculously uncomfortable for my hand)

Since you're looking at D70s (and definitely have the budget for it), why don't you go with Canon 30D. It's better than both 350 AND D70s.

All of the recent battery chargers I have seen ar rated for 110/220V and 50/60 Hz. I took my Canon charger to UK and Portugal (with adapters) and it worked ok.

As for the camera I agree with Kelly, Canon 30D.

Do you have any existing lenses from film SLRs?
If so, it may be wise to consider a camera that will accept those lenses.

When it comes to D70s vs Rebel XT(350), most opinions feel that BUILD quality is better in the Nikon but most other catagories give the edge to Canon.

Thanks for all your replies -Yes I meant the Canon 350 not 250, sorry.
Is the Canon 30D much more expensive?
I don't have other lenses so I'm completey flexible with regards to which camera I buy - budget will be around €1,200 or $1,500.

I don't know about pricing in EU but if you stretch your budget just a liiiiitle bit you'll be able to get 30D and Sigma 18-125 here in Canada for about US$1600. Alternatively if you can get an older model (but still brand-new) 20D with Sigma 18-125 here in Canada for about US$1400.

The only difference that makes a big thing for me is spot metering on the 30D and much larger LCD screen.

Canon 30D
Lowest prices off bizrate.com are USD$1250. IMHO it's the best APS-C dSLR you're going to find.

Sonno - Just wanted to say THANK YOU for posting that canon link. I have found the coolest tutorials on there, and they have been a great help in learning how to use my new Rebel XT that is on it's way here!!

Heyas, np :thumbsup2

Something else you might want to do as well. Google "Rebel XT manual" or something like that and try and see if you can find the .pdf owners manual online, would help a great deal!

What is the best type/make of memory card to get? I know the type may depend on the actual camera but which make is the most reliable or is the dearest always the best?

I don't want to get a bargain in a camera to be fleeced on the memory card.

My husband finally decided to switch from film SLR to digital after all these years. So he decides he wants the Nikon D70S. We don't go to WDW until September so we were hoping that would give him enough time to play with it and learn how everything works. Well, we ordered it last Saturday and they are backordered and Nikon isn't giving any dates as to when they will ship more. Called all the camera stores in town and they are all getting the same information. I just hope we can get it within the next month. Anything after that I don't know if we want to attempt to use it in Disney and risking coming home with bad pictures.

I would get the Nikon D50, MUCH CHEAPER. And it is pretty much the same camera.
