We are going to be in the neighborhood of HHI mid October. We are considering this more of a reconnaissance mission than a full on get-away. We want to get a sense of what the place is like and whether or not we might be happy with an extended stay there. We LOVE boating or taking boat rides and we are more of gourmet diners than buffet table people.

Ideas?

Must see?

Must do?

We loved lunch at the Sea Shack -- not upscale at all, think oil-cloth table coverings, but divine seafood.

Go and have a special dinner at the Old Fort Pub. It's a very nice, more upscale restaurant with the most romantic and beautiful view of the water. Excellent food and service and also an interesting history - on the grounds is an old Revolutionary war era fort, which you could actually walk down to see (although we did not, because it was dark when we were there).

Check out their website: www.oldfortpub.com

Enjoy your trip!

Just wanted to add - take the dolphin cruise from the resort if you have time. It's great not just to see dolphins, but to see the island from a different perspective. Your boat driver will show you some sights that you probably wouldn't see if you were just driving around the island in a car.

Agree with the PP's suggestion...The Old Fort Pub has beautiful views!

I would also highly recommend this quaint little restaurant called Tapas... It's right in the same strip as the Northridge movie theater. It's location is not much-- but the food is TO DIE FOR! They have the most incredible sauces. I would not feel comfortable bringing my young kids to this restaurant, so it's perfect for an adults-only night out!

Have a fun trip! :)

We have used the Vagabond Cruise Company for a dinner boat ride on the Palmetto Star. It's a beautiful ship and the food was very good.

They also have other themed boat rides.

Do you like nature on land also? We're 2 adults, no kids, and a trip to HHI wouldn't be complete for us without a walk in Sea Pines Forest Preserve. We also enjoy sitting in the adirondak chairs behind the main lodge waiting for the dolphins to come in. And then we like to sit over in the area at the opposite end of the resort, watching the boats cruise past. Our trips to aren't exactly busy and action packed!

What time of day do you do that? And is it all-year round? (I realize it's bound to be hit or miss, but is there a good time to give it try?). Thanks.

We've seen them in both spring and fall, around 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. I think it might have something to do with the tides, but I can't remember the details. The first time we saw them, the CM at the front desk verified seeing them, and told us the reason why/when. At first I thought someone was throwing something in the water because I heard all this splashing. But the dolphins were near shore, churning things up to get fish. Not surprisingly, there were some pelicans hovering around to dive down and spear some of the fish the dolphins churned up. I just remembered-I'm a birder and sometimes will spot several pelicans hovering not far above the water. That's when DH reminds me to watch the water for dolphins because the pelicans may be hanging around for left-overs, sort of like the flocks of sea gulls that hover around a boat.
