My mom and 2 nephews are joining our party of 4 for our trip next August. Would it be cheaper for us to get a DVC rental that could accommodate 7 people or just book 2 rooms at a moderate?

Rooms at a moderate will be cheaper.

However, renting points for a villa will be about 50% less than booking that villa direct. It will give you the ability to do your laundry and make breakfast\lunch\dinner - which may give you more savings.

One important point though - do you all get along, especially in staying in close proximity to each other? The 2 Bedrooms are a little tight when completely filled with adult sized people, imho :)

Also worth mentioning: In most 2BR DVC units, there will be either 2 or 3 "real" beds, and everything else will be sofa beds.

When you book 2 rooms at a moderate or value, you will be getting 4 real beds.

If looking solely at cost--I would consider how likely you are to prepare meals in your villa since you will have a full kitchen. If you think you would eat a lot of your meals in the villa, that could be substantial savings. But if you already know you would want to eat most of your meals out, then the kitchen won't be as big a benefit.

The biggest issue is typically that DVC rentals do not allow refunds for cancellation - if your mom and nephews decide to bail, you will still be on the hook for the full amount.

2 Rooms will definitely be cheaper... You need a 2 BR unit at any DVC resort which could run 300 a night and thats going low

DVC rental gets my vote because you'll have a washer dryer and actually have an oven is nice too, having a living room to visit in is so relaxing oh and a balcony with table n chairs too

We had 2 rooms booked at YC with a travel agency discounted rate and ended up at a 2 bedroom at SSR for much less. We ate breakfast there everyday but 1 and had snacks/lite lunch a day here and there. We actually used the washer and dryer the last night before we moved to AKL. I never do laundry on vacation but found it easy since it was right there. It's now one of our favorite resorts!

We have 7 people on our upcoming trip and we went with a 2 bedroom villa at Saratoga Springs. We wanted to be together, have the kitchen, living room and washer and dryer. Plus, we all love that resort. We initially thought about doing two moderate rooms to save money, but in the end it wasn't appealing to the grandparents and they are paying for most of the trip.

Depending on the time of year, a 2 bed at OKW runs $530 on Disney's website. Nice thing about OKW is you get 2 queen beds and one King bed, plus a pull out sofa and chair. Two moderate rooms could be potentially cheaper, but it'd depends on time of year and discounts. Renting points can be cheaper than two moderate rooms, but be aware of the fine print.

OP is going in August, which is either Magic Season or Dream Season for DVC. Those are the two most expensive seasons (point-wise) behind Premier Season (Christmas and Easter). Compared to the cost of booking thru Disney, renting DVC is most likely not going to be more affordable for the OP. You're absolutely correct that you have to be aware of the details!
