Wondering if the first Fri night party will be crazy busy?

We've been to WDW MNSSHP many times, but never at DL.
Planning a last minute trip to LA to visit DS(23) in his new digs:goodvibes and this is the only weekend we could do a couple of days at DL together. Is it worth including the Fri night party in our plans or just do Sat and Sun?

Also: does DL allow early entry into the park with just Halloween ticket like they do at WDW? WDW starts entry at 4PM even though official party start is 7PM. TIA!

Yes, you get to enter Disneyland 3 hours before party start time.

I would certainly plan for crowds, even if you weren't going to the first party. The first party historically sells out, but historically, many (most?) parties have also sold out. So in theory you'd be dealing with about the same number of people on most party nights.

Reports on crowd levels are very mixed, but few people say crowds are "light." For many people (myself included), crowds were heavier than expected, given you're buying a separate ticket to get into the park for a party.

It sounds like you probably like Disney Halloween parties. :) So I think I would probably go if I were you, if for no other reason, just to see the differences.

In general I would recommend the party to people who are interested in at least a couple of the following (or VERY interested in one item): wearing a costume at Disneyland, special meet-and-greets, dancing with characters, villains, villains-themed fireworks, trick-or-treating, interesting fog/light effects, and/or a SMALL parade (much smaller than WDW's).

You will be able to ride rides as well, but they're the same rides you would have experienced outside of party hours. I would never attend the party counting on reduced crowds or wait times. Some rides will have short waits, and I think most or all will have shorter standby waits than they do outside of the parties...but those rides are the ones you could have gotten a FP for on a normal day and probably had a 5 or 10-minute wait instead of a 30-minute wait.

The people-watching while waiting in line, however, is much more interesting during the party. :) You could probably add peoplewatching to the list of fun things during the party, but most folks come in before the party officially starts so if you just want to look at other people's costumes you could do a lot of that without buying a party ticket.

If the "perks" don't sound great to you, I'd either save my money/spend it on something else, or (if you can be in the area near park opening on Friday) just upgrade to a 3-day ticket for Friday ($50, I believe). You can experience DCA and/or DL early in the day. DL will start to get more crowded than usual 3 hours before party start time, and DCA will get very crowded close to the actual party start time as everyone who didn't buy tickets migrates to DCA. With Cars Land, though, an extra day for DCA has some appeal, even if crowds convince you to leave before DL's Halloween party starts.

Have a great trip!

I've to both MNSSHP and the first DL MHP (last year) and while the crowds were not light, they weren't horrible either. I found them to be very manageable, especially if you're willing to stay until the end of the party. We don't really do characters, so we were there mostly for the fireworks, cavalcade, trick-or-treating, and just to soak in the sights.

As Eeee-va said, the ride lines didn't really seem that much shorter than during the regular hours. The wait time for HMH remained the same pretty much the entire day (30-45 minutes), so the party wasn't really the ideal time to ride anything. I suppose I would say that for MHP, I would not spend much time waiting in line for the rides. I would do the special party events. It was worth noting that the candy lines were really long at the start of the party (pretty similar to MNSSHP), but thinned out in the last hour. Unlike MNSSHP, I felt like you could wait longer to find a place for the fireworks and cavalcade (especially the second one).

There are elements that are very similar between MNSSHP and some that are very different. I did a short comparison last year:

We went to Mickey's Halloween party last year on a Friday at the end of October, I believe it was the last Friday before Halloween. It was completely mobbed when we got our early entry at 4pm. We don't enjoy ourselves when it is that crowded (we have our three children, ages 6,6,and 8 with us). Lines were 30-60min for nearly everything and we did not even attempt the HM because it was so crammed in New Orleans Square. We just roamed around, got something to eat and did a lot of people watching. At 7, when the park closed to people without a part ticket, it cleared out. It's obviously not empty, but we rode every ride, some rides twice. Longest line was for the Haunted Mansion, about 45minutes. There was also quite a crowd to meet the villians and Jack and Sally. Overall, we thought it was one of the best Disney days that we ever had and we are doing it again this year!

Thanks for all the info!!
I would definitely love to do MHP, but I have been reading that the 1st party usually sells out, so, since I cannot make any definite plans this trip until I get to Calif (the weekend before the 1st party) the decision may get made for me. I will keep an ear out to see if it sells out before I know if I can commit to that night.
