Wednesday 20th October 2010

Today was a big day for us.

Mandy and I would be returning to The Magic Kingdom for the first time in 35 years, (together that is). Back in 1975, Magic Kingdom was the only Disney park and we went there three times during our visit. We were given little books of cardboard tickets which were each usable for a small range of rides and attractions. Our favourite ride was the Dumbos, and we were completely captivated by both Space Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean!

Today, we started off with breakfast at The Cracker Barrel. I had the Sunrise Sampler which included pretty much everything and was delicious. Half way through the meal I had a phone-call from home. It was our DS Callum with some really thrilling news – the band he plays in had that very morning signed a contract with a major record company. They had been negotiating for months so it was very exciting to finally see it settled. I just knew it would happen when we were out of the country!

So, after that good start to the day, we arranged to meet up with Mandy and co at the turnstiles of Magic Kingdom and Tony, Maddie and I made a quick stop at one of the camera shops on the 192 to see if they could fix my camera and the non-focusing lens on Tony’s. They couldn’t fix either, but the assistant in the shop tried extremely hard to sell Tony a new and very expensive new lens. The price on the box was over $1100, but after ten minutes of hard sell had come down to less than $600. A bargain then? Well no, actually. Tony checked it out in other camera shops and it was around $80 cheaper in them. The original price tag is obviously a ruse to make you think you’re getting a great deal! Fortunately, we hadn’t bought it.

We headed on to The Magic Kingdom and met up with the others as arranged. We hadn’t hurried to be there for opening today as we planned to be there until the end of Wishes at 9pm and we were all still feeling a bit jet-lagged.

We had our traditional photo taken in front of the Mickey flowerbed.

A kind family gave us a pile of fastpasses for Space Mountain and Splash Mountain, so we decided to start in Tomorrowland with Space Mountain, which we hadn’t been on since its refurbishment. We thought it seemed a bit darker than before, which we liked as we remember it being completely totally dark when we did it as children. We did most of the rides in Tomorrowland including forcing the others to see Carousel of Progress which they had never seen. It was unfortunate that it went wrong and we had to see the first bit again, much to their disgust!

After Tomorrowland we walked around to Fantasyland which is looking a little sorry for itself with all the hoarding up for the expansion. In fact all around the park there were boards covering various shops and restaurants where refurbishments were going on.

I think this attraction was in that spot in 1975. With loved this ride and queued for ages for it. It was quite scary - there were puddles of water in the bottom of the sub and we felt we had submerged a long way!

To our surprise, It’s A Small World was open early after it’s refurbishment so Mandy and I insisted we all went on it. The queuing was actually a bit chaotic; loads of people were pushing in and the CM’s weren’t stopping them and the queue now snakes right round to what used to be the exit ramp, so the loading/unloading platforms are now reversed. While we were queuing, a nice American lady in front of us said to us “You’ll love this ride – it has your country in it – Australia!” We just laughed, but of course this was a cue for us all to practice our Australian accents for the next ten minutes.

Despite the fact that we had eaten a huge breakfast, we all managed to be hungry at lunchtime. Cosmic Rays seemed to have choices for everyone, so we had an assortment of burgers, wraps and sandwiches there.

Mandy and I wanted to recreate some of our old 1975 photos so we put our hair in bunches for a few of them, including this one at the Tiki Drums:

This next photo from 1975 is of our mum with Thelma, her best friend from school. Thelma married an American and has been living in the US ever since so it was wonderful for them to meet up again. What we find so interesting is that apart from the colour, they were wearing almost identical outfits!

Of course we couldn’t resist getting a similar photo:

It was getting hotter by the hour, so we stopped mid-afternoon for ice-creams, dole whips and drinks at Aloha Isle then snapped a few more ‘Then and now’ pictures.

On the porch at Yankee Trader: 1975. As you can see, I had no sense of colour co-ordination - pink trousers, red bag, orange sunglasses!

We rode Big Thunder Mountain Railroad a few times, including once in the dark when the train mysteriously stopped for a few minutes right at the top of the highest hill! Mandy’s face was a picture! If only I had had a camera with me.

Mandy, Tony and I wanted to see the Main Street Electrical Parade so went off to find a good place to watch it from, while the others went back to Tomorrowland to do a few more rides.

We were getting a bit peckish by now, so popped into Pecos Bills for pulled pork sandwiches and burgers. This proved to be an excellent choice as they were lovely and fresh with a good ‘fixings’ bar too. We grabbed a table outside, ate our meal and waited for the parade to start. The whole park was extremely busy all day, so it was impossible to get a really good view for photos, but the atmosphere was fun.

The parade finished at 8.50, so we had just ten minutes to elbow our way through the crowds to the front of the castle where we had agreed to meet the others. It really was absolutely packed, but we found them ok and pushed our way down Main Street a bit to find a space to stand and watch Wishes. Maddie popped into The Main Street Bakery and got us cookies and brownies which were delicious. Wishes was fabulous as usual and it really was truly wonderful to stand there with (most of) my family around me.

We made our way out of the park and headed towards the monorail with a million other people, and after some considerable debate over which monorail to take, (the ordinary one or the resort one with the shorter queue) stuck with the usual one as we couldn’t remember whether the other stopped at the TTC. It was quite late by the time we got back to the villa so we all went straight to bed ready for a ‘rest’ day tomorrow.

Tomorrow: A rest day – shopping, eating, and an interesting accident.

Loves seeing the then & now photo's of you both, it's a bit like a spot the difference puzzle . It amazing to see just how little has changed over the years in pictures. At Tikki Drums only a couple of trees really seem to be missing.
I can see another scrapbook being created titled then & now. What wonderful memories this trip will have for both your & Mandy's family:thumbsup2

I'm really enjoying your report ~ it must have been great fun recreating the photos. :)

Congratulations to your DS!! :cool1:

I have been waiting for this instalment Theresa - I was hoping the good news from home was about Callum's band. What great news you must be thrilled to have a rock star in the family:thumbsup2

Loving the then and now photos - how brilliant - must remember to do some of those with the girls when they are older.

Such an interesting trip report - re-living everything with your sister and her family - how magical for you all

Oh, wow! I just love today's before and after photos and have been studiously flicking backwards and forwards to spot all the little differences.

That's a great shot of you all in front of the castle, too - it's so cleverly framed it looks as though you've got the park all to yourselves.

Obviously, I'm so late reading this that you've long since told me Callum's news, but for the record - well done! :thumbsup2
