14-24mm Lens question

It's an awesome lens. Are you comparing this to another lens in particular?

If you must use filters, don't buy it.

Were you gifted the D810? Are you new to Nikon?

It's generally considered one of the best lenses out there. Certainly the best ultrawide for Nikon.
But some caveats, it's very heavy, and very expensive.
The Tamron 15-30 rates very very highly, it's much cheaper and has VC.
The Nikon 16-35/4 is a bit smaller and cheaper, with VC. Obviously not as wide, and not rated quite as highly.
If you really don't need -that- wide, the Nikon 18-35 has great IQ (better than the 16-35, maybe not as good as the 14-24), much cheaper, much lighter.

So there are a lot of choices... Need to consider how wide, weight, price, and VC.

The camera is a Father's Day gift. After a lot of studying, I am seriously considering the Sigma 20 mm f1.4, art series. I prefer primes. But the Nikon 18-35mm is still being considered. Main reason for these two is to cut down on problems with the ultra-ultra wide lenses. (And I do like filters). Would love to have the 14-24. I appreciate your reply it made me do further research.

(And I do like filters).

Here's why filters are a no go. But she is a beauty. My favorite, but least used lens. :)

They do have some filter options, like the WonderPana, but then you are shooting with this monstrosity.

The 18-35 is an excellent option if you don't need 14mm or 16mm and don't mind increased distortion. Its also much easier to carry.

Having said that, I couldn't resist the urge to buy the 14-24 and so far I'm happy with it. Incredible lens really.

14mm, 16mm and 18mm are very different. 2.8 may be important as well.

But you mentioned 20mm, so maybe going ultra wide isn't all that important. Depending on the type of photography you like, I'd look hard at the 24-70 f2.8 nikon or tamron. This will cover a wide range of shooting situations and I guarantee will be more useful than any wide angle. If you already have glass that covers these focal lengths, please disregard.

Because of the cost.... and too the lack of usage... I went DX with the 10-24mm.
