OMG...I am a little shocked at this ....see below..my girls play hockey and it
is so easy to pass on germs...I keep telling them not to share water!!

Teen was playing hockey in London on weekend and died last night with H1N1 symptoms and appeared to be totally healthy !! London has the highest incidence of H1N1 in Ontario

I saw it on the news this morning.
I also heard that Ottawa and Kingston were the hardest hit with the second round of H1N1 right now. Makes me think we better get the shot this week.

Guess where we live? Actually the news said it's spreading fastest in London, not that we have the most of it. They said they believe it's spreading faster because London was relatively spared during the first wave, compared to places like Hamilton and Toronto, so we're all completely blank slates waiting to be written on. Greeeeeaaaaaat. Hoping flu vax tomorrow since dd is in priority group and the health nurse I talked to on the phone said since ds and I will be with her, we can get ours then ,too.

I have lots of family around there, my Grandma live in Etobicoke. We will have to wait and see if this becomes more of a trend or if this was just an isolated incident. If anything it's a darn good reason to get your flu vacine this year.

We're in Ottawa and the clinics can't keep up with the number of people wanting the vaccine. One of five area clinics have already stopped taking new people today because the line is too long .... and that was 10 minutes BEFORE it opened! Just ridiculous. The lines are hours long outdoors in the cold.

Casper: I read that's because there aren't enough nurses to give them, though, not that there aren't enough shots. Apparently, they're going to pull nurses from other programs to fill the voids. I'm planning to go at least an hour early tomorrow. With my dd's asthma, I can't take the chance of her not getting vaccinated. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, too.

I guess I am pretty lucky, I got mine last Friday, our hospital was giving them to employees and I work in the adjoined building, had no problem and only a 10 minute wait. I don't usually get the seasonal flu shot, but I really think this is important, not only for my own safety, but also not to get it and infect others.

Just because you get the shot it doesn't mean you won't get the flu or that you won't spread it. The vaccine is completely unproven and if you are around infected people the virus can live on your clothes for hours. You will still have to be vigilent about hand washing, disinfecting etc..

does anyone know what are the KEY differences between H1N1 and regular flu. My doctor is discouraging patients with flu like symptoms to come is(but she is another story altogether ) and saying the urgent symptoms go directly to the hospital.

She has started with headaches, and fever(but the first day i kept taking her temp with ear thermomemeter and it was always around 98 degrees) the next day she was still really hot and used a digital thermometer on her, and it read at 102, and normal with ear therm. so she has finally gotten rid of the fever after day 2, and headaches gone, but still lingering cold and stuffy nose., but no fever today at all. I will keep her home from school 1 more day and hopefully it will be big difference,. Now i wonder if i will bother with Vaccine if she may have gotten it already?

I had my daughter at our doctor's office today. She has been sick since Saturday with high fever, sore throat, headache and cough. The cough though, is the least of it. She could barely nod her head to answer me when I spoke to her and was so lethargic last night and this morning that I called the doctor and asked to bring her in.

I know that the doctors are not allowed to test for H1N1 unless you are in that special "comprised" category or under 5 but after reading about the 13 year old today I wasn't taking any chances. Also, my friend and her daughter were tested positive for H1N1 last June and they had the same symptoms as my daughter.

We were isolated as soon as we arrived and the doctor checked her and said she has to assume that it's H1N1 since they can't test. Oddly, she took her temperature and even though she was practically on fire the thermometer said 96 which is normal (???). The doctor even took it again under her arm because she thought it was bizarre as well.

Anyway, the doctor said it is rampant through the city and there is nothing she can do. Just keep giving her Advil (which is barely, if at all, helping) and don't send her back to school until she's been clear of a fever for AT LEAST 24 to 48 hours. Um, well, which one is it?

There is a lot of kids from their school with the same symptoms.

2. Usually not a runny nose with flu.
3. High fever, aches and pains with flu not with cold.
4. Sudden onset for flu.

It is scary.....I stopped having my kids get flu shots a few years ago because of side effects. A woman I know got the Epstein-Barr syndrome and was recovering from a stroke for over 6 months! So I figured we would just deal with flu, but this is so different...seemingly healthy kids are dying! I am usually pretty level headed but I have to admit this has me worried..myself and 2 of my girls have asthma....

I am high risk (asthma) and was tested yesterday for H1N1 and given tamiflu.

I have:
1. cough - wet with mucous
2. very runny nose and eyes
3. High fever, aches and pains
4. Sudden onset for flu

Last year neither myself of my 2 kids got the seasonal flu shots because the winter before my mom got Epstein-barr from her flu shot and she was in bad shape for a while, luckily recovered though.....but it made me concerned and we didn't get ours last winter and thankfully never got the flu.
This year I am very concerned though, funny cause I wasn't planning on getting the H1N1 until this past week. My son is immuno-comprimised and it seems like EVERYONE is sick right now and I am afraid for his health this winter so we are going on Thursday for the shot and crossing our fingers that we are all o.k.

My daughter is TERRIFIED of needles and I'm not sure I will get her to go....she is 15 and it's hard to take a kicking and screaming 15 year old to the clinic.

How do you know that is is unproven ?
Do you work in the field ?

The powers that be have had a total of SIX months to develop the vaccine, test it, approve it and manufacture it for delivery. Who did they test it on and how can they prove whether or not it works and what the side effects are in that time? You don't have to "work in the field" to figure it out.

Waited 6 hours outside before getting mine (seasonal and N1H1). Crazy lineups ... Not going to enter the debate on the merits of getting it or not .... made my choice.
