13.1 Series Marathon - Boston Sunday June 27, 2010

DH John (Space Ranger) & I are registered. It will be a quick trip for us. Drive up Saturday & drive home Sunday after the race.

I will be there! Flying in Thursday night and out Monday night and staying with a friend in the area. Looking forward to this race. It is my last distance race for the summer. Afterwards I start concentrating on getting Dad trained up for his second half marathon - Disneyland.

Have you guys done any of their events before? I've looked at their site and some of the races look really interesting so I would love to hear a review of the event.

I kind of picture it as a smaller and little less polished series then the Rock n Roll events but having another bit racing series around the country would be great.

I've never done one myself but I have some friends that have done them and really had a good experience.

I considered this, but living at the Jersey Shore - I know how HOT June can be ........... so I declined. I wish is it was either later in the year or earlier but the heat and running does not equal a happy day.

Please give a race report, as I would love to hear how it goes.

I just looked at the 13.1 2010 Series Awards..... if you run every event in the series in 2010 you get "Entries to any 13.1 Series event for LIFE!"

Keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be able to walk the Boston race. Am signed up for it. Tore my hamstring a few of weeks ago so not sure I'll have the strength or not. My doctor thinks I'll be able to walk it but don't want to push it.

Did the 13.1 in NY back in April. It was ok. Think there were 3000 runners/ walkers. Weather was great. Course was ok- lots of mud in one part that went on for quite a while. The NY course looped around the same park several times and found the course to be poorly marked. Went the wrong way a couple of times (along with many others) and had to backtrack. Boston course should be easier to follow.

Next up after Boston is Disneyland! Looking forward to completing the Coast to Coast Challenge.

I usually don't post on the events section of WISH but I had to pop into this thread. I will be running this, it's my first half. (My longest race is 9 miles)

I thought I'd just share that I don't know what the exact streets the race is on are like but I do know this area is hilly. Just to give everyone a heads up. I'm hoping to drive out that way this weekend to check out the course.

Also you can follow the race series on facebook and that has been interesting to me because you're able to see what people are saying about the other races and see answers to some questions.

Someone asked about the entertainment at the Boston one and here's the response from the 13.1 people.

"Your favorite Pro Team Mascots, live music from DJ Dan of the Celtics, interactive sports experience, kids activies... plenty of stuff to keep you entertained from 6AM-10:30AM or so."

Thanks Karen! I will keep an eye out for you guys, I have seen the Wish shirts before and know you'll probably be easy to spot. Lets hope the weather is better for us then it is this weekend. (Lots of rain this weekend.)

Good Luck to everyone tomorrow. I'll keep any eye out for wish shirts. I'll be wearing BU hockey gear so you know if you see a stranger approaching.

I am certain others will be chiming in later. Unfortunately his race had several inaugural year issues. They ran out of cups before I hit the second water stop. They were pouring out of the jugs right into people's hands. Eventually they were able to get cups on the course and towards the end there was a man on a golf cart riding down the course with cases of water throwing them to people. As the back-of-the-packers neared the finish line they had taken up the mat and were bringing down the finish line. It hadn't yet reached 3:30 since the first runner crossed the start line, so they were doing it prematurely. There was a walk from the finish to the food and water, which was not well signed. It was a beautiful course although the rolling hills were closer to running mountains. They advertised "majestic views of Boston" was actually one glance from the top of the "mountain" on the out-and-back, so you got to see it twice. Was not the worst race I have run but I do hope they learn from their mistakes and can make the race live up to its potential.

I do have to say it was nice meeting the few WISHers I came across when I was at the race today. Looking forward to seeing you all again in the future!

Two more things I forgot to mention. No Gatorade for the back-of-the-packers (not even sure the mid-packers got any). I did't carry it because I was told it was going to be on course and I really felt the effects of not having it. Also we were told by one of the bands that we were "too slow" for them to be playing music for us. Really? I have a feeling the director would be REALLY upset to know their entertainment said this to someone.
