What we do is book a room about 2/3 of the way down to Disney. We book online with a credit card guarantee. You usually have until 6 pm of the day you are supposed to check-in with no penalty. That way we have a guaranteed hotel room if we need it and if we want to continue driving a little further, we can just cancel that room.
I think for your first trip it might not be a bad idea to plan to stop, that way you'll know how far you can get in one day. Our kids have taken so many long road trips it's hard to count, but we can't go more than 12 hours reasonably. I can't sleep in the car (a control issue
) and my husband can't stay awake to drive at night. We know we can get 12 hours, but beyond that is too much for our family. Last time we drove back from family at Thanksgiving we drove 14 hours straight through and we were all so stir crazy by the end of it we all wanted to scream.
