Cast: Me (40), DH (47), DD (12 1/2), DS (11 1/2), 3rd DCL cruise
Today was scheduled for Castaway Cay. DH and DS were signed up for the 9:15 fishing trip, but at bedtime last night, DH still hadn't found his license.
I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of our closet door sliding back and forth and slamming into the side of the closet. Somebody had put velcro on one side of the closet, but it wasn't on the other. I got up and pushed the door completely closed, and noticed that the boat was rocking pretty heavily. Went back to lay in bed worrying about the seas, the temps, DH's license, etc. I finally got up and checked out the situation from deck 9. It was REALLY windy out there and awfully gray. I had the alarm set for something like 6:45, and went down to rouse the herd. DD got up pretty quickly, and she and I went up for the breakfast run while DH worked on DS. DD wanted to eat outside at Topsiders. By the time I made it out to tell her that wasn't a good idea, she figured it out and was heading back in. I joined a couple of DISers (GaRry, and stace's husband Jay) since there were no available tables, and we discussed the likelihood of our docking at CC. Poor Jay. I think my DD talked his ear off (she comes by it honestly though!), and he left when she went to get a donut. DD headed off, and DH joined me. I think the captain had come on announcing that there had been substantial high winds during the night and our docking would be delayed.
I went back to the room, and DH and I started the in-depth search for his license. I unpacked everything I'd packed the day before searching every pocket. No dice. Meanwhile, DH is searching the room again. Finally, he checks the clothes in the closet, and it turns up in one of his pants pockets. No telling why, but hey, he's found it at last. Shore excursions had already told us the morning fishing was cancelled, so we were just going to do a beach day. We finally docked about 9:30 or so. They announced that the "predator net" in the family beach area had been damaged, so that beach was closed to swimming while they repaired it. They said that the boat beach and teen beach would be open for family swimming, and serenity bay would be open for adults only. I think this was about the time they announced all shore excursions except biking were cancelled. It was probably about 65 and gray/windy when we docked.
We headed off the ship and found a couple of loungers with 2 chairs in front under a palm tree, and set up camp there. We expected that DS would go to Scuttles, since we couldn't get him out of there on our first two cruises, but he said he didn't want to go. The kids headed for the water, with DD getting wet, and DS just hanging in the sand. DH and I decided to check out serenity bay, then come back and get lunch with the kids. We walked to the tram stop, and had a nice ride over with Diana and Kevin (DancinD and Tinksdad). It was really really windy over there, and there was a lot of vegetation blown up onto the beach, so DH and I decided to head back.
The kids weren't at our chairs, nor were they at the beach. We decided to get lunch and see if they'd turn up. We ended up walking all the way back to the teen beach, and the gameroom expecting to find DS there, but no joy. We did run into the Gose family (wdwgoose and cruisin goose), and chatted a bit about Vanessa's (their DD) bingo winnings. Back to the chairs, and DS was there, picking at a stick. DD had been in the water over at the boat dock. DS's finger was bleeding pretty good, and it turned out that he had cut it on a sea shell. I took him over to First Aid to get it taken care of, and by the time I got back, the sun (what little there was) had disappeared. DD was out of the water, and we gathered up our stuff. DH and DS went on to the ship. I stopped by the shop and bought another magnet (bet you didn't guess that!), and I also got a Castaway Cay t-shirt. DD browsed for something for her best friend, but didn't see anything there.
When they announced the shore excursions being cancelled, they said they would be offering extra things on the ship, so we picked up a copy of the offerings at guest services. They had opened up the lab back on board, so DS went back there. Before the cruise, another DISer had asked me if I could get a "graduation" cap from the kids show for her DD. My DD said that she would do it. That meant DD had to do the show, so she promised to be at the lab by 4:30 for practice. DH and I went to the added showing of the Incredibles in the Walt Theater at 1:30. After that I finished up our packing, then we went to watch the kids show at 5:00. We sat with Tory (Goofydadeo's wife), and I saw DD go on stage, but not DS. In the pictures they displayed, there was a great one of DS in the pool, and he was also voted "future mad scientist", which was appropriate! I went down to pick up DD after the show, and DS hadn't been signed in. He finally showed up just before 6, said he had watched the show but wasn't in it, and asked to go see the 6 pm showing of Elf. DH decided to join him, and DD and I went to the farewell variety show.
After the show, the two of us went to watch the talent show, which was pretty good. Some of the regulars at Karaoke were there, but there were also a couple of DIS kids who did a good job. DH and DS met us there, and of course DS decided against dinner again. We had handed out our tip envelopes the night before, because we wanted to be sure we didn't forget. So at dinner, the servers thanked us for them (especially the phone cards). Alex said he had never seen a Wal Mart card, so we explained how they worked and he did say that they visit Wal Mart for their personal needs shopping. Back to the room, where DS had ordered room service. I got the luggage out in the hallway, then we all went to bed.
