We are looking to cruise with our friend in April. Her room for 1 person is more than our room with 2 people. Any way to save some money??

It's called a single supplement, and I don't think DCL ever cuts any deals on it. Can she invite a friend?

Single cruisers pay a 100% premium for bookings. That is, they will pay for two people in the room, but will only pay the taxes and port fees for one person.

The only way I could suggest saving money in this scenario would be have her find a friend to cruise with; or book a lower category room.

Our friends put one of their children in their moms room and only charge her for her part as they would be paying the same for a child in there room which lowers her cost. They get rooms next to one another and the Child still goes and sleeps in her parents room. Maybe this will help. The kids love the option of sleeping in different rooms.

Typically, 3rd persons in a room (especially if they are children) are a lower cost than the second person in a room. The first two people in a room pay the adult price (regardless of ages).

I'm looking at a 1 bedroom. Just a few hundred dollars more and I think we could make it work.

Unless I am reading this wrong and the OP and friend are booking two same category cabins, they are asking why there friend is paying more than the cost of two passengers, and as you say without the taxes and port fees for two people?

From the description, it sounds like the friend is paying above the 100% premium?

I think > 100% can happen in these situations (since they are losing that non existent person's on board spending and whatnot), but I'm sure someone else can confirm if I'm wrong.

Maybe they booked the room on different days? I usually cruise solo and pay the cost of 2 people with one set of port fees. That is the only reason I can think that the same room category would be higher.

I think that may be the csae also. i cannot see why else the price would be different. The op has not been clear as if they booked at different times, or are looking to book together?

They are looking into a 1 bed, so that makes me think they can switch reservations?

No. The point is that the second person in the room is FREE, regardless of age, other than port fees, if the room would otherwise have single occupancy. This is because the single supplement is a 100% surcharge. That is, a single traveler pays the same fare as two adults. Free is always going to be significantly less than what it costs to add a third person to another room.

I've completed seven solo cruises and unfortunately DCL doesn't offer discounts for single cruisers. I wish they offered discounts for singles or offered single staterooms like some other cruise lines do. Nevertheless I know this going in and budget for it.

I was referring to the fact that the family (that had moved their child to the single room with grandma) would now be paying for a full adult fare, and not the lower 3rd person child fare. Yes, overall, it's cheaper since the full adult fare in the second room is already paid and they are no longer paying for that 3rd person in their room, but it's not fair to have grandma pay both fares for her room. But, only grandma comes out ahead in that scenario.
