How exactly did the stingrays kill Irwin?

Well, it was just _one_ really big stingray. He was swimming with it and apparently it got spooked and hit him with it's barb ... straight to the heart. It killed him pretty much instantly. They were filming for some special at the time, so it was all caught on video. Very out of character for rays and according to those who saw the video, Steve didn't seem to do anything that should have caused it to freak out. I think it was just his time to go.

Well, the ray's at Castaway Cay are "groomed" I believe weekly to avoid being pierced.

there was a problem with some posts and they were deleted. but that didn't happen until a few hundred posts later. The 99th and 100th posts were first "won" by one group and then post numbers changed after the mix-up and a whole other group of "winners" emerged! Are you confused yet??? Fun fun.

As I recall Steve Irwin was merely swimming above the stingrays, not threatening them, and one got him in the chest as if by accident. This caused paralasis and/or heart stoppage very quickly.
About a month later we were on a swim with the stingrays excursion in the Caymen Islands (Carnival Cruise). They took pictures, which I can't track down right now.
I definately wasn't thinking of sharks at the time. The guides convieniently brought food to attract the rays and get them in a furvor. They would grab a ray and put him on your back, where they gave you a hickey.
All fairly fun until it was time to reboard the boat. I was the last one to the ladder, and being the only one who might have any more food still in the water, they were all over me. Knowing that Crockadile Hunter, who knows a lot more about rays than I do, was taken by one, created memories not soon forgotten. No stings though, all is good.

Wow, I go away for a couple of days and you guys blow the thread completely out. At this point it will take me 2 weeks to catch up.
