09/13/09 SSMC09 S.S. Member Cruise 2009 - Part 4!

We're looking at flying into Vancouver on Saturday and then enjoying the city on Sunday and Monday. It is $$$ but I'd rather pay a bit more and get a non-stop than to try and make connecting planes etc.

I wish I could find a non-stop. No such thing from Boston to Vancouver, minimum 1 stop. Did you look into places to stay Mary

The Vancouver FAQ thread has lots of great information. We're thinking of staying at one of the ones right by the port. $$$ but they look wonderful and since this may be one of those once in a lifetime trips might be worth it.

Lisa- I have looked into flying to Seattle then taking a hydrofoil up. It was looking around $550 pp to fly to Vancouver or about $250 pp to fly to Seattle, then about $125 pp for hydrofoil. We still haven't made up our minds. Which date are you looking at for the cruise? I spoke to someone on the West Coast and it costs the same to fly up from the Bay Area as it does from Boston.

Dave,

I have to ask.;) What is a hydrofoil?

Thanks

Hydrofoil

A hydrofoil is a winglike structure or foil, attached to the hull of a boat that raises all or part of the hull out of the water when the boat is moving forward, thus reducing drag. [1]

The term "hydrofoil" is also sometimes used to refer to the hydrofoil ship itself. A hydrofoil is a boat with wing-like foils mounted on struts below the hull. As the craft increases its speed the hydrofoils develop enough lift for the boat to become foilborne - i.e. to raise the hull up and out of the water. This results in a great reduction in drag and a corresponding increase in speed.

Flo & Dianne- From what I found out it is a very fast moving boat. It can go 50mph through 9 foot waves and you don't feel them at all. For me it is just a cheaper way to get to Vancouver :rotfl2:

Hi Marsha! That would be cool if you were able to join on next year's cruise. Right now, I feel so lonely. I want you all, each and everyone of you, back on there next year.

Wow! Long day. Hope tomorrow isn't as long. Get some rest. :)

Hi Chris! I am really hoping that we can go next year. I am waiting for the info to come in the mail. Lucky for you, you do not have to wait. :)

Today was not as long as yesterday and for that I am thankful.

Thanks for the information Mary and Dave.

I am not set on a date yet. I will have to go investigate the various options in transportation.

I really have to estimate out all the expenses before I make any final decisions.

Thanks again!!

Have a good night.

Thanks Dianne and Dave.

Dave - Don't blame you. Also, sounds interesting.

Morning Everyone!

Dianne - Hope you feel better. :wizard:

Chris - How is brooke?

Mornin All!

Thanks for asking about Brooke. I believe that after a day of rest yesterday and taking cold medicine she is on the road to recovery. She sounded better this morning and was going to school. She only has a half day, then she can go home and lounge around again. I just hope that no one else gets it.

Dianne - hope you feel better soon!

Dave - the hydrofoil thing sounds interesting.

Hi Marsha! I would think the information would be coming out soon. Cuz don't they have the call in date in early November sometime?

Take care everybody! Have a great Hump Day! :flower3:

Good Morning All!

Jumped on for a few to check in. Glad to hear the kids are feeling better.

Today is picture day for Lauren so we had to take some extra time this morning to get her ready. She was so exicted. She looked really cute.

Chris - I did a quick look at the thread from the SSMC08 and it was about 10/19 when people commented on receiving the SSMC09 details. So, it should be any day now.

I keep thinking maybe just maybe I will try to go. I am so undecided with attempting to do both the Alaska cruise and SSMC10. I am mostly concerned with all the 'other' expenses for the Alaska cruise. We have friends here in town that are also DVC members and they are planning on calling in for the SSMC10. Their DD is in Lauren's class and their DS is a couple years younger than Kyle but they all are friends so that would make it a lot of fun for the kids. What to do...what to do??? But then I swore I would not take Kyle out of school next year. :sad2: Decisions!!! :confused3

Here's another question regarding the DCL cruises. Do you all generally book either thru DVC if using points or DCL if using cash? Is there any advantage to booking the regular DCL cruises thru the travel agent advertised on this website? I guess since many of you book those dummy dates you do it thru DCl. Just curious.

Okay, gotta go. I have to get logged on to work. Have a great day. I have to drive to Dover, DE for class tonight. Yuck.

Chat with you all later.

I've done it both ways. We usually just use our points for land based stays so for our cruises (with the exception of the Member Cruises where we do 1/2 and 1/2) we pay cash.

A travel agent can be a big asset for you. For example when I booked the dummy date I gave the name of my agent. They called while we were in Disney World asking if I really wanted that date or would I be switching to 2011. A quick phone call to them and they did all the work on booking day. It wasn't the sponsor of this site but someone else recommended to me and they have been wonderful!
