I don't know if its the same in the States but the OP is referring to a type of lettuce, a heavy , crunchy, pale variety , that here in Europe we call Iceberg. In supermarkets you can buy it whole or as a bag of the shredded leaves which could be referred to as an iceberg salad.

We have Iceberg Lettuce, but most places offer a variety of lettuces and call it a green(salad), or side salad. They can be as cheap as 99 cents (Wendy's)or up to several dollars(6.95-8.95 at a better restaurant). The 99 cent version is a side salad it is about a cup full of lettuce, a few pieces of broccoli, 1-2 tomatoes(grape), cucumber slice, carrott shavings, crutons, etc. In a resturant it might be as large as a meal in it's self(3-4 cups of lettuces and then other veggies). I always ask...and even if you don't see it on a menu, many resturants will offer a side salad if you order a meal @ a small cost 2.50 ish. Many places allow you to substuite a side salad for a pasta or potato side.

A head of iceberg lettuce is usually around $1.89 here in the grocery stores. Sometimes it's on sale for less, but I've also seen it for close to $3.00/head.

OMG and I though it is very expensive here as IMHO it has to be not more than 0.49$ in the summer :rotfl:

You can get a bag of pre-cut and washed iceberg salad (usually with a bit of red cabbage and carrot mixed in for color) for as low as $0.99 on sale, but usually the pre-made salad is about $2-3 for a bag.

Where do you shop??!! Holy Cow!

I just paid $.89 the other day at Walmart. During the winter, I might pay $1.75 for it.

I skip the iceberg lettuce and buy the romaine hearts. They come 3 to a package and I usually get them for 2.50-2.99 per package. I like them much better than iceberg, and MUCH better than the pre-cut bagged stuff. Plus, the hearts are better than a head of romaine because all that leafy stuff on the outside is already removed. I hate to buy a head of romaine and throw away the first layer or two of it because it's so gross! LOL
