I've been subscribed to the Vancouver FAQ thread since I booked my Alaska cruise last spring, but I'd love some clarification on one small planning point.

It seems like the great deals that people have gotten on hotels in Vancouver happened through Priceline and Hotwire. I have some hotel names to keep in mind, but am wondering when it will make sense to start looking for deals, since I've never used either site before. It seems like May will be an ideal time to start, maybe? I know to keep an eye on BetterBidding to help me figure out which hotel is which.

    Any tips appreciated :)

I've heard that July 1st is Canada's Independence Day. I looked at some prices and had sticker shock. :O Not sure how busy it would get as it gets closer so we used DH's travel points from work and booked rooms at a Holiday Inn just to ensure we have something booked for pre-cruise in Vancouver.

I'm interested in seeing the feedback you get as I can always change mine with no penalty.

I found out about Hotwire about 4 months before our cruise and booked the Pan a couple weeks later. I watched for rooms to show up for friends after that. The rooms would come and go during the day so I checked every hour then snagged one.

I got a good deal at the Pan Pacific in 2011 when someone on the DIS told us about a special on the Pan Pacific web-site. So I'd suggest visiting that regularly.

Just wondering if it was close to the Hotwire price. We paid $130 a night for 2A2K in July 2011.

4 months out sounds like a good starting point to me...I am really hoping for something at that $130 price point! I just see a lot of last-minute bidding happening on the Hotwire/Priceline tip sites and am not sure how long I'll have to futilely check for a deal.

I'm having major, major sticker shock at the rack rates for the hotels that get commonly recommended here! Like rancingfan (hi, cruising buddy! :wave2:) said, I'm sure part of this is our timing.

Does anyone have any of the details that have come up in the past on Hotwire for the Pan Pacific, etc.? I haven't seen a ton coming up lately on Better Bidding and those sites...just wondering what past cruisers' strategy was.

There should be the stats that were available for the Pan on Hotwire on that thread if you search. I honestly can't remember. It was a 5 star and it was in a certain region. The Wall Sheraton was also an option that was very nice. It was 4 stars. We stayed there the first night because I couldn't get a room at the Pan.

I also found it amazing that the rack rate for the "cheap" hotels here were so much higher in Vancouver.

I just searched for my post on that thread and this is the info I went with.
The Pan Pacific was a 5 star 90% recommendation on Hotwire. The Sutton Place was supposed to be 5 star with 80% on Hotwire

It was $100 per night plus taxes. It had limited dates but worked for us. We sailed in June - don't remember if the rate was available for other months.

Sign up for Pan Pacific specials. We found a good price off their website.

We loved the Pan and would recommend it highly.

Thank you! Super-helpful. Sometimes even with a search the long threads can be a pain to weed through :)

Just booked the Pan for $186 in Aug.
    Used the entertainment rate.

Pretty good considering the rate on line starts at $ 258 for that time!

I will keep checking though! We have lots of time.

So the ones with experience (never used hotwire), how does $119 for 4 stars and 90% customer reviews in the Vancouver Downtown - Coal Harbour - Stanley Park area hotel sound? Trying to book one night for May 27th. Should I wait? If it is not within walking distance, then it is just a cab ride.
