So, here we go again ……….

another trip report.

Well, at least for this one it was easy to find a title. ;) :wave2:

We, that would be my dear brother Tom, who works for the Austrian postal services and loves everything and anything Disney and goes along with my vacation planning.
And then there is me, Karin, teacher by day and planner of Disney trips by night and every other moment I am awake.

We usually spend our summer holidays in the US. We started out in 1992, went to Disneyland and fell in love with it. Ever since, our vacations have had a Disney element in them. In 2009 we wanted to go on a once in a lifetime cruise with Disney, being sure that cruising was not for us. Well, despite some odds, by day two on the wonderful Disney Wonder, we were rebooked and have been cruising every summer since.

For the last few years we have been sailing on the Disney Dream and Fantasy, mainly doing back to back cruises, with a stay at Disney before and after the cruises. :sail:
As everyone well knows, Disney is not a cheap vacation destination, figuring in that we have to travel at the height of the season because we have to stick within school vacations and Transatlantic flights are not cheap either.
So in 2012 we decided to have a “cheaper” :scared: vacation and stay in Europe in 2014. Yes, I do plan that far ahead, at the moment I am trying to figure out what to do 2016. Oh, and I could not have been more wrong about this being a "cheap" vacation. :rotfl2:
When Disney released their Med cruises, we were all for one that was leaving from Venice and going back to Barcelona. I quickly used one of my dummy cruises to secure it and we started going from there. But the more we started thinking about it, the more obstacles started to pop up. One of them being that the itinerary was mostly Greek Isles, another one the different departure and arrival ports. We were discussing all the pros and cons and then decided that we wanted to have a look at other Disney Med cruises that visited more different countries.
So about 2 months after the original booking we decided to switch to the cruise following the Venice to Barcelona, which was another 12 night cruise visiting France/Monaco, Italy, going through the street of Messina, Turkey, Greece and Malta. The price had already gone up a bit, but it wasn’t too bad, given, that the whole 12 night cruise put us back quite a bit.
Once we had finally decided on the “correct” cruise I started planning what else to do that summer. So I added a few days in Barcelona before the cruise, changing our accommodation ever so often, added a day after the cruise,
then decided that instead of going straight to Paris/DLR, we would return home for a few days to “do some laundry” and relax before heading out to Paris and Disneyland Paris for another 9 nights.

In retrospect, there are a few things I would do differently if I had known what I know now, but all in all it was a fun vacation with a lot of great highs and a few lows thrown in for good measure.

Interested? Then come along for the ride ……..

And to make matters worse ;) I am merging this TR with the planning for our upcoming trip in March - a Western Caribbean cruise on the Magic, and 3 half days at WDW. :dance3:

Yay!!! I made it!! OMG!!! OMG!!! Am I really first?!?!? :faint:

I am sorry you had some lows on your travels but very happy it was still wonderful. So often we learn from our adventures now to make the next one even better. ;)

I can hardly wait to hear all about everything!! ::yes:: And three half days in WDW in March 2015...hmm...what will you be doing the rest of those three days? Sounds interesting for sure. :)

I'm here, Karin. I will be reading, but understand if I don't post with my trip just three weeks away and I have to finish my TR.

Woohoo!!! Karin is back in the house!!! Looking forward to all the details..both good and bad, and food porn YAY!!! We missed you!!!

Day 1, July 23

A beautiful new city to explore …….. Part 1

The alarm rang at 4am and we knew as hard as it would be to drag ourselves out of bed at that ungodly hour, it was the start to another long summer vacation.
A bit different, as it did not include a hop across the pond, but at least we would be on a Disney ship for nearly two weeks. With that thought in mind, we got out of bed and got ready, then turned off water and unplugged whatever could be unplugged before at quarter to 5 we finally loaded the car, locked the doors of our house and off we went to the airport.
As always, once we had reached the airport, we parked in the no parking zone, unloaded the big suitcases and headed inside to send them on their way. We had had a hard time going with the weight limit of the suitcases with all the fish extender gifts we were carrying, so one of the bags was overweight and it was a quick process to pay for the excess weight. Once everything was done we headed back out to the car, drove to the carpark and parked our car in row M, like Mickey. Car parked we quickly made our way back to the terminal and went through security. No long wait, we had just made it in time for boarding.

So we soon were on our way over to the plane

and climbed in.

Shortly before our vacation, Lufthansa had started to sell exit seats to passengers and I had been able to snag them, so we had nice spacy seats with room to stretch our legs. Not that it would have been necessary, as this first flight was only a 55 minute long one. Shortly after we had reached cruising altitude

we were handed a

“Pickup” cookie bar and served some drinks. Tom got some

coffee, while I stuck with

water and we finally had some “breakfast”. About half an hour after we had enjoyed our breakfast we were landing at Frankfurt airport.

We were in no kind of a hurry as we had to spend four hours anyway. A bus picked us up and drove us to the terminal where we checked out where our new departure gate would be, then we checked out the nearby stores before heading to one of the airport restaurants for some breakfast.
It didn’t take long and we came across a really nice little restaurant, where we found a table, sat down and a server was quickly there to hand us a menu. Tom ordered a

Diet Coke and a

“Roastbeef Stulle”, toasted country bread, roastbeef, cream cheese, salsa verde, Romaine lettuce and crispy fried onions. It tasted as yummy as it looked and was quite a huge portion. I had seen on the menu that they had a nice tea selection, so I ordered the

Lazy Daze (Earl Grey) Samova tea and the

Toast Eggs Benedict, poached eggs with grilled green asparagus, Hollandaise Sauce and crispy bacon. It was different from the usual Eggs Benedict I usually have at Disney, but it was really tasty and the perfect meal to start off the vacation.
We took our sweet time to finish off our meal, then walked through the shops again before we finally headed off to find our departure gate. On the way there we learned that it had changed, but it was only just a little further down the hall. Once there we found seats and waited for them to start boarding. A few minutes later they started boarding and once we were onboard we settled into our seats and soon we were off.

Again, once we had reached cruising altitude we were served a snack, this time a

herbed cream cheese and cheddar sandwich and some drinks. Tom had some

beer to wash it down, while I stuck with Coke, hoping that the sugar in it would help me snapping out of being so tired.
After we had finished our meal, Tom took out his pad and we watched the new episode of Masterchef.

It is a two hour flight and after a little nap right in the middle of Masterchef we were finally informed that we were getting close to Barcelona. And then we found out that we had picked the perfect seats as the plane was flying past the city and we had a perfect view.

And soon enough we were landing at Barcelona airport.

The airport was huge and beautiful and we walked towards baggage claim where we had to wait quite some time for our luggage. But once we had it, we loaded it onto a cart and off we went. We went through customs and looked for our driver. Yes, we had a private driver. First mistake of the trip.

To be continued ..........

Yeah!!!!!!!!! I have readers!

:welcome: Christine!
AND, you are first!!!!!!!! I love it!

You are right, some of these lows were a live and learn experience. :lmao: But it was a great vacation all in all, with a lot of awesome places to visit.

Well, those 3 half days are actually a late night visit to the MK (hopefully) on arrival day, then since it will actually be Tom's birthday on the next day we will get on board the Disney Magic for a Western Caribbean cruise and once we get back we will have the half day when we get off the ship and half a day on the next day, the day we will return home.
I guess I need to put up a planning update soon. ;)

I'm here, Karin. I will be reading, but understand if I don't post with my trip just three weeks away and I have to finish my TR.

:welcome: Kathy!
No problem about just reading - I so understand about time being short with trips coming up, but knowing the speed I am going when it comes to posting TR updates you won't have much to catch up on. :rotfl2:

Yay another Karin trip report to read! Looking forward to hearing about all of your adventures!

:welcome: Lisa!
So happy to have you here and I hope you are going to like this TR as well. Not so much Disney parks time, but great spots to visit in Europe! ..... and yum food! :thumbsup2

Hi Karin. I always love reading your reports. Count me in.

:welcome: Tricia!
I am very happy to count you in! :goodvibes Hope this won't disappoint.

Woohoo!!! Karin is back in the house!!! Looking forward to all the details..both good and bad, and food porn YAY!!! We missed you!!!

:welcome: Jeanette!
It's going to be another long one. We went to some awesome places and had a totally different vacation to the ones we usually take. It was really wonderful, but I am already looking forward to our March vacation. :rotfl2: ..... and there was lots of yummy food being consumed, no problems there. :goodvibes

You do like those early flights.;)

But non-delayed flights and good seats are the way to start a trip.

Uh oh on the private driver...doesn't sound promising.

It's not so much that we "like" those early flights, but they are the only ones out if we want to catch the connection in Frankfurt. :rotfl2:

But we were very lucky with the flights being on time and the room to stretch our legs wasn't bad either. ;)

I like early flights because it gets you there at a decent time..at least here...I did an afternoon flight this past weekend and of course it was delayed and I never stepped foot in my room till 10Pm..it was a long day, but worth it.

Hi Karin!

So happy to find your new report! I have been reading all your previous reports and am happy to catch this one while it is "live". Great start. On pins and needles here waiting to see how your driver was.

Hi Karin! Welcome back!:dance3: falling asleep now, but I'll be back to read - looks like a great adventure! pirate:

I'm here! :jumping1:

I can't wait to hear all about your adventures! We are getting ready for our own cruise, our B2B on the Dream, so I'm hoping this TR will help make the next 8 days pass a little bit faster. :teeth: I'm already pretty excited, I don't need any help with that!

Nancy

Love your reports and leaving for Barcelona next week for the Transatlantic cruise so can't wait for your next entry :)

Yes, another trip report :cool1:. Can't wait to read it, love all the pictures. I can't wait until March, because we will be in the same cruise!!!!:cheer2:
