I don't whine about the heat, in fact I like it.....Hearing vacationing adults whine about the heat makes me giggle......I know you're likely soft with no resolve. (There's always exceptions of course)

What some people call lackadaisacle parenting others consider teaching their children independence, resilience and responsibility. Less than 100 years ago children worked or helped with the family business at a fairly young age and often had their own home were married and starting a family at 17. Many 17yo men fought in WWI and WWII. I don't want to return to all of that but not giving kids freedom is harmful. We may never have another great inventor. But most of the remarks here are either humorous or tongue in cheek.

well you know..the title of the thread is a mystery, is there really an "average" DISer? Are they among the Unicorns? ;):rotfl:Just having fun...I wouldn't be on the boards as much as I am if I didn't enjoy the folks here. :disrocks:Live and let live are still pretty good words to follow. :flower:

My children are practically perfect in every way; then they wake up and game over!
My husband runs a company single handily; then once again he wakes up and goes to his job.
We go to Disneyland every year; in my mind, but my bank account slows me down.
We do homeschool for religious and educational reasons, but mainly educational.
I cook from scratch, and spend an obscene amount of time on pintrest to do so.
My kids have their own Vtech tablet and we rarely monitor their usage.
I use Mario Kart as a way to get my boys to leave me alone.
We have guns...and ammo...somewhere around here....
I may not agree with most people, but I do like most people.
If you come to my house I will serve you coffee and cookies.

I'm not talking about being perfect or having no money. There are other issues here that make me sad and depressed. It seems like some people are intent on showing how hip it is to be a lackadaisical parent but that's just me.

Its nice to know my lackadaisical parenting has resulted in two totally different but well adjusted, independent young men.

Sorry, I think this sounds like a humble brag.

I'll have you know my lackadaisical parenting resulted in 3 totally different but well adjusted, independent young men! :)

Sorry, I wanted to get back on theme. ;)

Hip? :rotfl: I do think there's something to be said for "lackadaisical" (by today's overprotective, overinvolved standards) parenting but hip isn't the word I'd choose to describe it. Hip, to me, implies trying to impress and being a more laid back parent does just the opposite - it raises eyebrows and gets judgments flying all over the place.

I don't fit the typical DIS mold, for sure. No guns here, ever.... liberal, almost socialist sometimes... gave up going to church/believing a LONG time ago and happy with the decision. While I wouldn't live in any other country and appreciate everything we have as citizens of the US, I don't feel the need to flag-wave constantly or beep to "show we support the troops." We'll never make 6 figures, combined, and before someone hops on here and says, "Just move, you are choosing to stay and be underemployed," let me laugh out loud!! We have minimal retirement, I am sure not enough, but didn't have a college fund. Let's see... oh yes, animals. While I'd never knowingly hurt an animal (and not technically true, as i used to do scientific research involving rats, mice, and rabbits), they are pets, not my children or "furbabies." We have 2 cats that I really enjoy, but they are just my pets. And I'd never own a dog. (told you I don't fit the DIS-mold!)

I DO have the bright, above average, well-behaved, sleeping through the night by 4 weeks, talented daughter. Graduated 3rd in her high school class, 5 courses of AP credits, leadership, artistic, etc., and guess what? She didn't get any offers for a free education ANYWHERE, and graduated summa cum laude last May with $27K in education debt. I threw that in not to brag, but to show that it DOESN"T always go the way so many post that it should ("Just work hard, get excellent grades and an outstanding record, and scholarships will flow!" HAH!!!)

I'm also bad. We have been known to extend or reduce DD's age a tad when it is financially beneficial, used discount codes we might not be 100% technically eligible for, put extra people on the floor of a hotel for a night or two, sneak snacks into movies, buy one mug and share it for free coffee (on our rare on-site stays), and put our dessert from Boma into a storage container to eat back in the room. Debt makes me sweat blood, but we have a mortgage and a HELOC (which makes me anxious), as well as credit card debt at 0% interest which I'll pay off with the HELOC next May (when the CC goes to a higher rate than the HELOC). I use credit cards for everything but pay it off monthly, but you will never catch me using a debit card. Checks work well for me- I pay my bills by hand monthly, putting a stamp on each (as reminded by the envelope- the USPS won't deliver without a stamp). Out 2 cars are from 2005 and 2007... except for the lease DH took last year, but there was a calamity and we needed the third car (but he got a rate lower than $150 a month, and we cannot wait for the lease to expire. Never again.). OH. And I have, once, done the family vacation where I took the kids on Pooh while the uncle stood in line at Dumbo and the aunt at Ariel's meet & greet. Someone might have been in line at Peter Pan, too. We handed off the kids from one ride to the next, and guess what? Nobody in line seemed at ALL bothered, or perhaps they were too intimidated to say anything.

Disney vacations are usually planned within 2 months of travel, when I know I have/will have the money and Dis VISA points to pay it off. We have been to Disney A LOT... but they are all cheapie vacations, majority offsite sharing hotel/condo space with another family to split the cost of the rental and the car, or great deals through my sister's timeshare. Airfare is always on points through southwest or we don't go. No souvenirs, few TS restaurants, breakfast in the hotel room (and sometimes dinner offsite, so we can afford it). We'd rather go to Disney frequently, not expensively. I routinely took DD out of school until 8th grade, at which point she said no more, as it was too hard to make up all the work when she returned. LOVE that she's out of school now and we can go whenever we want!

I'm gonna say it again. I think there are some genuine people from all walks of life in the DIS. I also think there are some genuinely crafted characters on the DIS as well. It seems to be pretty easy to tell who is who and what is what over time. Lives just aren't that perfect, I don't care who you are, where you live, what you do, what your children do, how amazing your spouse is, and all the other 100% positive things in your life. We all have negatives, and to so strongly avoid that is kinda strange and telling. But, it does make for a great character on the DIS either way I suppose.

We have some retirement, I am sure not enough, but fortunately DH has always worked in places that match contributions so the account has built faster than if left to OUR guidance. I think you fit the dis mold exactly. I really do.

  1. We don't have children so no opportunities to brag about how perfect and brilliant they are.
  2. I haven't cut family out of my life but there are some I don't go out of the way to spend time with.
  3. I don't know how I butter my roll nor do I care.
  4. I am a liberal with no guns, ammo, or a Confederate flag in my house.
  5. I often want to correct others English but I don't.
  6. I hate my job and can't wait to retire but don't have a $2 million retirement fund so can't.
  7. I sneak snacks into the movie theater.
  8. I don't coupon.
  9. I rarely cook and don't have a freezer full of food for the apocalypse.
  10. I enjoy reading the DIS but expect that most people on here are exaggerating to the nth degree.

One word, time. It seems I have way less free time than the average disboarder. We never go to Disney for more than 4 days and I rarely spend more than half an hour a week on the board. I don't know how people have so much vacation time for these 14 day trips that follow what amounts to a full-time job of planning for the two-week trip. I know some of these trips are once-in-a-lifetime trips and I might be just a little bit jealous, but I just don't know how they have the time.

:rolleyes1:rolleyes1 I wouldnt call my parenting method lackadaisical just old school. God forbid I used to discipline my children when they were younger, as in get a real spanking. No time outs, no sitting in the corner, nothing like that. Nowadays that would be considered child abuse. Times have changed and I wouldnt say I was a hip parent.

Well, this clears it up for me. Since I only birthed out and raised ONE kid, who has turned out well adjusted and mostly independent, I get where the lackadaisical part comes in. Not my parenting, just my lazy approach to procreating, lol. I have to clarify the mostly independent part. I still wash my son's clothes, and will for 2 more weeks until he leaves for college. He has control issues with laundry detergent, you know, more is more, instead of less is more, and I don't want to find suds all over my laundry room floor again!

Boy, do I understand the laundry detergent thing as well as all other soaps and shampoo. Our 3 could go through all of those things at an alarming rate. When they moved out to college, my wife and I really had to change our purchasing habits because usage went way, way down. Now she just spoils the dogs with smelly stuff so I'm not saving any money in the deal, it's just being re-purposed. :)

I don't hover over my children's every waking moment (like my mother did with me and my sister and they way she does with my kids). I tell them no if I don't feel like playing with them and I don't feel bad about it. When we go to the park, they need to go and play while I sit on the bench and watch them or talk with my friend. I am not there to entertain them. I drink wine and beer in front of them and when we go out to eat, which some might consider not a good parent. We are only going to Disney this year and won't be back until the kids are older...much much older.

I'm a native Texan, born and raised in Houston (before it was nicknamed the air-conditioned city!) and now living in Austin. I HATE the heat. It's just that I know how to cope with it, and I'm vain enough to feel superior when I hear or read a complaint about the temperature reaching 88 degrees somewhere up north.

Do we need to spin off a light-hearted thread about buttering bread? Not a serious one, like the thread of fond memory!! I have a favorite way that might prove entertaining.
