I'm looking for information on if anyone- anyone at all- on the DIS has recently used this code successfully. I see TONS of talk about it, and some people saying they think Alamo accepts it, but if you are from USA they don't include the insurance. That's fine since our own insurance covers it anyway. But even though it's a HUGE savings for us, I'd like to know if they are allowing US travelers to use it. Thanks to anyone who can comment.

I've said this before months ago in a similar thread about the Vroom code. It is a code intended for international visitors only. This code DOES include insurance. You cannot deselect it. I have personally witnessed myself one incident where Alamo refused the rental because the person presented a US driver's license.

As with any code you are not eligible to use YMMV. However I always urge people NOT to use codes no matter how good the savings that include insurance. Your playing Russian Roulette in the event of a accident. The counter and/or exit booth may not check and you might get away renting with it but if a accident does happens and Alamo processes the paperwork and discovers your a US citizen; they will come after you for the damage of the car.

So once again. This is not a code I encourage people to use on this board as the majority here are American. It is intended for international license holders only. It includes full insurance.

If in doubt, call or email. I did an online chat with Vroom Vroom, and they said it is absolutely a good code in the USA. I personally have AMEX extra insurance on my card for $25 per year, along with my personal insurance, so I don't need another insurance. I am going to use the code. The Alamo site took the code, if they don't honor it upon pick-up, I'd consider that bait and switch which I don't think they would stoop that low.

Again, don't take my word for it, call or email either Vroom or Alamo yourself to check it out.

Who said it wasn't good? No one said the code wouldn't work. I said who it was intended to be used by.

You don't have any choice in the matter. Rental car agencies insurance with contracts cannot be removed regardless of what your personal or credit card insurance does. That "extra" would only become secondary which is meaningless in a accident.

I think your confused on what Bait and Switch means. This is not a promotion. This is a contract code for those entitled to use it . Alamo's internal system lists the code and its requirements.

I didn't have to do either. I have a contact that works in Alamo that verified the information I'm relaying according to their own system. Most CSR's are lax and don't bother checking but get one who is following the rules to a tee and you will be denied. Like I said earlier, I witnessed one such interaction. BTW there are two Vroom codes. The one discussed here is the one that includes insurance and was geared to visitors only. In fact I know of no domestic code that isn't company operated that includes insurance for any of the rental companies.

That isn't a bait and switch. That's you using a code you hope you are entitled to and finding out you were wrong. If you really want to know if Alamo will take the code, ask Alamo, and mention that you are an American customer. The question isn't is if it is good in the USA. It's honoured in the USA but intended for International Travelers to use in the USA.There's been many discussions about this code over the years here. Some have luck, some don't, many are told they can't use it at all. Some have used it and Alamo honoured the rate but dropped the insurance etc.
I personally don't use a code I don't know for sure I am entitled to because it would stink to get there and start my trip with a problem.

I double checked the Vroom Vroom site and looked at the T&C for Alamo. It specifically addresses US citizens and rental insurance requirements. It doesn't say anywhere in there that the offer is only for international customers. Here's the info:

I always drop the insurance with the rental car, because my Travel Insurance covers it, and I also get additional coverage through my credit card. The coverage through the rental car companies is way too expensive, and you can do better adding a rider with your travel insurance.

Which Vroom Vroom code?

There are two codes. The one we're talking about is the international code which yields the cheaper rates. Not the one you linked to. Which if you notice they talk about making sure you have insurance. The international code comes with all insurances included.

I called Alamo after using this code for my reservation and the agent pulled up my reservation and said the code was fine. We'll see...I have insurance on my own so I'm not worried about that part.

When making the reservation, in addition to all the regular info needed to reserve a car, the site asks which country you live in. I chose the US which was one of the standard choices. The site continued to process my reservation without getting an error message.

And even with the insurance the rate is still much cheaper than anything else I've been able to find.

That was my experience as well. I'm also an Alamo insider, so all my contact info, DL#, etc., is all right there. I had no problem using it. I'm assuming all is well.

I also am an insider so all of my contact information automatically gets loaded into the fields as well. I want a great rate but I don't want to get anything illegally.

How do I know if my rate is acceptable or it is the other one that yellowjj is talking about?

Sigh .... and some people wonder why many of the "great codes" are no longer passed along on open forums...

My advice is to call Alamo with your reservation number and ask them if it's legit and if you will have any problem when you pick up the car. I just did, and all is well.

But don't take my word for it, call them!

I did the same a few days ago and was also told my reservation/code is fine. I have checked in on-line and have done the skip-the-counter registration so we'll see when I get to the agent at the gate I guess.

Sigh. I really wish people would read the thread in it's entirety before asking a rehash of the same questions. :scratchin

*If you booked your car through the Vroom Vroom website, then you are fine. You do not need to enter any contract id anywhere. It is for anyone to use. You will be fine.

**The international code I speak of must be entered through Alamo manually. This is the restricted one that has been making its way on the boards for the last few days and is only for international license holders to use. It includes insurance which cannot be declined by you. As you know, rental insurance renders any personal and/or credit card insurance useless. Which is why you must decline any optional rental insurance offered if you are covered by other means and wish it to become primary.

The Terms on Vroom Vroom page are NOT for this contract id. It refers to booking through their site only.

I leave you with a post from 2013 about the same thing. I bolded it.

"I tried using the code last month in Fort Lauderdale. I was told that the code was for people with International driver's licenses.

They matched the price but could not include the CDW as they said that Alamo wouldn't honour it."

This person got a break from the CSR at that time. That's the exception, not the norm.

Remember T1 ;)

Hi Folks:

We have friends that just arrived at MCO today going to Daytona 500. They used code 299851 (we gave it to them). They reported that Alamo gave them difficulty at the desk stating in was for "overseas customers". Alamo did honor the code. I just cancelled all our reservations that we were using code 299851 (we had 3). I am now using Costco Code. I can't take the risk of not getting them to honor the code.
