Uber started here in Orlando about 8 weeks ago. I've used it in cities up north but this is the first trip here without a rental.

I've used it 5 times in 4 days and it has worked perfectly! For about $10 a trip, I've gone between resorts and the Dolphin and TL and the Dolphin. I never waited longer than 6 minutes for a car. I'm where I want to be in 10 minutes.

I went to the Luau last night. Requested Uber in the room, he was there by the time I hit the lobby. On the way home it was later so he took longer (when youj bring up the App you can see how long it will take) so I made the request used the ladies room walked to the front of the Polynesian. My car was there before the people next to me's SIL walked to the parking for their car.

Saving an hour out of the elements and going door to door. Cheap at $10.

Download the App

I have to check this out.....is it a service where you instantly request a car?

It's similar to a taxi service, but people drive you in their private cars.

Do they transport luggage too, like a taxi? Like going from one hotel to stay at another ?

Not necessarily.

I'm not sure what they are offering in Orlando, but what you are referring to is the UberX service. They also offer the original Uber service, through which you can book a licensed town car service and in a few markets an Uber Taxi service too.

According to Ubers website UberX is the only service offered in Orlando. PP is correct, with respect to Orlando

One of our local television stations did a story (I think on Uber, or another similar product). They pointed out if there is an accident, the driver's insurance may not cover them since they're transporting people for money.

Just something to think about.

Uber offers different services in different municipalities. NY requires the drivers and vehicles meet all the requirements imposed on companies which operate as taxis or car services.

Other communities seem to buy Uber's claims that they are exempt. Uber claims the fare represents a suggested "donation"

I'd be happy to, consider, using a service like Uber if the driver and vehicle meet applicable requirements, including insurance.

Uber has insurance for these situations and the drivers are required to carry insurance. Even if they had no insurance and you got injured it would be no different than if you were a pedestrian and got hit by an uninsured motorist.

Do you know the policy limits of Uber's insurance policy?

As a casualty insurance litigation manager, this is not very comforting. As appealling as this sounds, I would need to do more research before being comfortable. I suspect there are required regulations because insurance is one of the most regulated industries.

I just read somewhere there are some special intrest groups that are against UBER.

I had an awful rainy night in NYC after a dinner out. Cab after cab picked up everyone around me and one person ran and hopped in my cab. I never want that experience again.

I am looking forward to using it this weekend in NYC.

That is not at all comforting. It really makes me think that I'll just stick to cabs.

I've taken NYC cabs for years. I've had a good percentage of drivers that are unable to communicate and don't know where they are going. Dirty, smelly and old. All of the Uber vehicles are new and the drivers have been well dressed and personable. More like a professional driver.

Yes.

From Uber's website.

In The US, What Insurance Is Available If There's An Accident?
If you’re taking a ride requested through UberBLACK, UberSUV, or uberTAXI, your livery or taxi transportation provider carries a commercial insurance policy in at least the minimum amount required by local regulations. If you didn’t get his or her insurance information at the time of the accident, please reach out to us so we can connect you.

If you’re taking a ride requested through uberX, some transportation providers are rideshare drivers providing transportation with their personal vehicles. Rideshare providers carry personal insurance policies. In addition, there’s a commercial insurance policy with $1 million of coverage per incident. This policy covers drivers’ liability from the time a driver accepts your trip request through the app until the completion of your trip. This policy is in addition to the driver’s own policy, but it acts as primary insurance if the driver’s policy is not available for any reason. An additional insurance policy covers drivers when they are logged into the Uber app but are not currently on a trip.

There is also uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (UI/UIM) of $1 million per incident for bodily injury, in case another motorist causes an accident and doesn’t carry adequate insurance. So, for example, injuries caused by a hit-and-run accident would be covered by the UI/UIM.

I've used cabs at WDW before, for whatever reason, the hotel needs to call one and you wait. I don't wait as long using UBER.

Also, the Dolphin will direct you to a car when you ask for a cab. Twice I was in a hurry and paid $21 for a 8 dollar cab ride to Typhoon lagoon.

Used Uber to/from the airport from Universal this weekend. Perfect experience. $30 total, no in person transaction, the cars are almost always cleaner and nicer than cabs, and the drivers have always been friendly. Have used this in Richmond, New York, and Orlando now. Never using a cab service again unless Uber isn't available in that area.

I'm in LA where Uber has been around for a long time. It's a flawless experience every time. I haven't used a cab in nearly two years.

Every car covers $1M in insurance. You have nothing to worry about if something happens.

The special interests groups (otherwise known as taxi unions) keep trying to get them shut down. They are upset they now have competition.

In Chicago the situation for cabs is so bad now that the last sale of taxi medallions garnered zero bidders, when they used to go for upwards of $300,000 each. Good riddance!
