STARS, POLITICIANS JOIN TOM CRUISE DEBATE

Wednesday Jun 29, 2005 4:00pm EST
Thursday Jun 30, 2005 9:30am EST (updated)

Tom Cruise has taken plenty of heat for his controversial comments about psychiatry on the Today show – and now celebs and politicians are joining in the fray, PEOPLE reports in its latest issue.

Marie Osmond, who wrote a book in 2001 about her struggle with postpartum depression, criticized the actor for his comments regarding Brooke Shields, whom Cruise took to task for using antidepressants to help her postpartum depression.

"What he said is very harsh for women who live it or have lived through it," says Osmond. "He should not sit in judgment."

Cruise has even sparked backlash from members of Congress. This week, the Congressional Mental Health Caucus criticized his remarks. "It is unfortunate that Tom Cruise has sought to use his celebrity to once again negatively reinforce the unfortunate stigma associated with mental illness," said Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-Calif.), co-chair of the caucus, The Hill newspaper reports.

Meanwhile, King of Queens actress Leah Remini, Cruise's friend and fellow Scientologist, defended him at the War of the Worlds premiere in L.A. on Monday, telling reporters, "Tom hasn't gone crazy. Tom is a beautiful person who does a lot of good things for good people."

In his personal life, Cruise's future in-laws – both devout Catholics – are wrestling with the issue of Cruise's faith in Scientology, which Katie Holmes has expressed her own interest in.

When asked about Scientology on June 23, Katie Holmes's father, attorney Martin Holmes, said: "I don't believe in it." Katie's mother, however, says: "Whatever somebody believes in is fine."

So what made one of Hollywood's most likable, bankable stars decide to tangle so publicly with such controversial issues? "What I believe in is that people should be able to think for themselves and they should be able to make decisions based on information," Cruise told PEOPLE senior editor and Early Show contributor Jess Cagle after his Today appearance.

In Hollywood, the question is: What impact, if any, will Cruise's Katie-smooching, Matt-scolding escapades have on a career? Although some industry experts note that Cruise' affable public persona plays a role in his drawing power, they predict that his recent behavior is unlikely to affect a surefire blockbuster like War of the Worlds.

One New York-based publicist tells PEOPLE: "Ultimately if the work is good and his movies are good, then all the other stuff will have a limited effect."

Meanwhile, whether humans are for or against him, Cruise told the German tabloid Bild on Wednesday, when asked if he believed aliens exist: "Yes, of course. … Are you really so arrogant as to believe we are alone in this universe? Millions of stars, and we're supposed to be the only living creatures? No. There are many things out there, we just don't know."

Tom is the arrogant one! He really has gotten too big for his britches! :sad2:

Yes, they should make their own decisions based on true information not the garbage coming from Tom Cruise.

Does Tom also think the world is flat based on his knowledge and observations of his surroundings?

I read the other day that he is an 8th grade drop out. Is that true?

while this MAY be true...he has to go and be a jerk and say "are you really so arrogant..."

he comes off as "holier than thou" and it's QUITE annoying

and besides - I still think he's a nutjob.

He's so smug. I wish someone would bring him back down to earth in front of the media.

I still think he is a great guy and actor. What other actors do y'all know that would stand outside and sign autographs for 2 hours? Not many these days... ;)

If you believe that we are the only intelligent life in the universe then you are arrogant.

So Tom Cruise is speaking his mind, big deal. No one said you have to agree with him. Why is he taking so much heat when hundreds of celebrities spout off about politics all the time? He's not qualified to give psychiatric advice? Yes that's true, and it's also true that Sean Penn isn't qualified to give political advice either. They can both say whatever they want though, because people are entitled to their opinions.

He's lost his marbles for sure. It's disturbing to see a movie star implode before our very eyes.

I agree!

I think TC is an arrogant *. I am so tired of celebrities trying to force their views and beliefs on a public who basically made them what they are. I do understand he is trying to do good for children who need help, but saying PPD doesn't really exist and the like is too much for me.

I have also heard reports that he basically held "auditions" for his next girlfriend and Katie Holmes was the "winner". From what was reported, Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johannson, and Jennifer Garner (must have been pre-Ben Affleck) were also in the running for this position. WTH?

Good, he's an idiot. When he either gets his medical degree or at the very least gives birth and experiences hormonal flux then he can speak out with some intelligence on the subject.

Note to lissawynn: Don't believe every rumor you hear about ;)

Was TC's picture on the Men In Black Screen? :rotfl:

Wow, TC asking people if THEY are ARROGANT :earseek: Now, that's something TC knows about!

You are very correct. They are entitled to their opinions. And I am entitled to mine.

My opinion is that Sean Penn is not qualified to give political advice. He is certainly entitled to state his opinion. Unfortunately, because he is Sean Penn, there are those in the world who aren't smart enough to discern opinion from fact, and will take Sean Penn's political opinions as fact because Sean Penn said them.

As far as Tom, he is turning into a caricature of himself. And he is not qualified in any way to give psychiatric advice either. He is certainly entitled to state his opinion about psychiatric care & treatment, and I am entitled to think his opinion is ridiculous. And I do.

There is nothing sadder than a person having a midlife crisis that is played out for all the world to see. There's no fool like an old fool. My opinion is that in a few years, Tom will be looking back at this period in his life with a mixture of bemusement and embarrassment. I'd be worried if I was Katie Holmes' parents, but she may have to learn her lesson the hard way.

Oh, and for the record, I do believe there is probably life on other planets. In this unimaginably infinite universe that we live in, it doesn't make sense to think that there is no other planet capable of supporting life.

I just find it funny that Leah Remini, to defend TC, had to say, "Tom hasn't gone crazy." :rotfl2:

Very few of these celebrities impress me with their intelligence. I don't really care what they think; I just wish they didn't get so much press coverage of their inane ideas.

I can't stand Tom Cruise. Yes, he's entitled to his opinion, but I think he's an arrogant jerk.

I blame the media for putting his goofy face all over the TV, so that we have to listen to whatever thoughts come into his silly head.

I, for one, won't be seeing War of the Worlds until its on cable. No way am I sending money to fuel that lifestyle.

Well, I wouldn't blame the media...I would blame the people. The media wouldn't focus on him if the people weren't interested :earboy2:

The money from your cable bill will go to the movie, which will trickle down to him :rotfl:
