I know i am gonna get flamed for this but i really dont feel i should let the amount of my meal decide how much i should be obliged to leave the waitstaff. I have prevously waitressed in my past and i understood that the guest has no legal responsability to tip me for my service they are only required to pay for their meal. I accepted the position knowing the sad pay i would be receiving and still chose to accept the position. If i get crappy service on a $ 100 meal i am not going to leave more than a $5 tip maybe because the cost of my meal does not reflect on the service i received. It took the waitress the same effort to bring me a 10 dollar meal as it did to bring a 100 dollar one. Does anyone agree with me?

No, I don't agree. It is how the system works in the USA. Getting lousy service is the only reason you should leave a smaller tip. Being mad at the system is not a reason.

By the way, tipping discussions are not allowed outside of the official tipping thread. So don't be surprised when this one is locked up.

Some people agree with you. They're wrong and so are you. If you get truly bad service, complain to a manager.

The OP knew they would get "flamed" for this post. I'm guessing they knew they would get a strong reaction from people who didn't share their viewpoint.

No. Nobody agrees with you. You are wrong. You know how the tipping goes in this country and if you can't or won't tip accordingly you need to stick to fast food and take out. I would hate to be your server.

Why would u hate to be my server if you are a good server you wil be tipped accordingly but if u stink u will not be no matter what the cost of meal was. I think that is fair. I am not going to just hand them the expected amount just because they got my table and didnt do a good job.

    I agree completely.

If I pay $100 for my food then I have to tip $18, but if my food only costs $50 then I only need tip $9, thats mental!?!?!

Also, if I felt my meal were not worth the money then I would complain and offer a lesser amount, I want to be able to do the same with my service. If I do not feel you are worth your 18% then I promise you will not be getting it

In UK we tip whatever amount we feel the service was worth, there is no fixed cost at all.

A percentage of the bill is a ridiculous way of doing it.

Its just a product of the tipping culture in USA. They just wanna tip everyone for simply doing their job

Tipping 18% is crazy I book 2 tables so we will be less than 6 at 1 table. If you are supposed to tip according to cost, and you get free dinning why tip that much. I vote to go back to when tip was included:upsidedow

Calling you cheap is an observation, not an attack. You're trying to do some internet debate kung fu here to cover up the fact that you're wrong. Tipping works the way it works whether or not cheap tightwads like it. If you want to pretend you got bad service to screw your server out of wages, that's on your karma, not mine.

Have a nice life being cheap. Maybe don't eat at sit down restaurants if you don't like tipping. The dollar menu at McD's might be more your style.

Wether or not I agree with the tipping system in the US is really irrelevant since it isn't likely to be changed anytime soon. I always tip 20% unless terrible service in which case I typically alert management. In Disney I have always felt the waiters and waitresses do a wonderful job and don't deserve the shaft of a shorted tip. You could always eat CS/QS to avoid tipping.
