    Made our first shirts yesterday.

A couple of tips I figured out. It's really hard to get in the folds of the small shirts, I banded them to tight. Use Saran wrap, not grocery bags to wrap them. Grocery bag ink will run. I panicked after 7 hours when it looked like the whole bottom (back) of the shirts were solid Blue. Went ahead and pulled them, rinsed and washed them. Just when I was about to go to bed.

    Here's how they turned out

I was pleased with how well the heads shaped up. Here's what I did.
    1. Used Upholstery thread for basting
    2. Made another wrap of doubled thread to really cinch down the head
    3. Wrapped "neck" in (2) 3-1/2" 64 lb rubber bands.
    4. Hooked rubber bands over door knob to pull them and stretch them down tight
    5. Cut small hole in sandwich bag and slipped it over head
    6. Rubber band around hole of sandwich bag to prevent leaks

Thanks for showing us how to do this. Now to put our transfer in the middle of the head. :)

I was wondering (Pixiecrafts?) if someone could offer me some color suggestions. I'm looking on the Dharma website and am a bit overwhelmed.

I am looking to make shirts with a "carribean sea" feel, probably 3 colors with shades of blue/turquoise/green...

I had good luck making red/white/blue ones in the past, and I'm ready to "branch out"...

Does anyone have any favorite colors they want to share?

    Thx-
    -Lissa

PS no rush, planning for August 2013!

Love these! How did you get your white so thick around them? I know about the dental floss...is that all you did?

You have all inspired me to try making some shirts. However I can't seem to find waxed dental floss that isn't Mint - can someone tell me where you found it? I have all the big stores around me.

I used mint floss and it was fine. I never did post a picture of us wearing our shirts from November 2011 so here it is. I am getting ready to make some new ones for August soon :)

Amitrat you're shirts turned out great.
One more question if you don't mind - I finished basting my shirts but when I pull the string it's not quite an even shape. When I put the rubber bands around Mickey's head, how do I kept the ears from running past my stitching?

It won't be an even shape. It will look a little wonky, just pull the fabric out from it as best as possible.

And LOTS of rubber bands! I make my wad of bands between 1/2 - 3/4 inches wide. Some will run under, but that has worked well for me.

I don't use waxed - Glide brand (or the generic equivalent) works even better for me. That stuff slides right out!

Im having an idea - tell me if you think this will work. The dye the tshirt like normal - maybe "snake style" would work best. Measure out the top section to be about the size of your Mickey head and dye it the color you want your head to be. Then after the shirt is done, use a bleach pen and draw in the Mickey, essentially filling up the middle space.

I tried to do the sewing the Mickey in with dental floss but it never comes out right!

Leaving on the Fantasy 3 weeks from yesterday and I want to make red/black shirts for Pirate night - but not if they don't look good! Who can I hire to make them for me? LOL

Never having done this, I can't say it works, but I've been told by people they use those clorox pens to "clean up" around a Mickey head.

So Im thinking red and black for the Pirates in the Carribean night on our cruise. What if I wanted some white in there? Would I not die a "slice" or two? Would I not blend the colors so much.....although last time I attempted this I got too much white!

Hi everyone, I am a newbie and have been reading about all the fun you are having and the great ideas you have:cool1: I went out and bought some supplies today (tulip dye kit, thats all I could find in my area) shirts, soda ash, gloves, etc. I will attempt this tomorrow:confused: wish me luck. A quick question: can I mix the dye in the bottles or do I have to mix them and then pour them into the bottles? Thanks in advance:goodvibes

OMG I must be the stupidest person on the planet! Im attempting to practice the spiral and its just not working. And when I think I get it, I can't get a rubber band around it without the whole thing falling apart. Maybe its because Im practicing with a dry tshirt. So frustrating! Id like to give it another shot and see if it comes out any better than my first attempt but this is making me nuts!

OK, last night I basted the mickey heads on 3 shirts, this morning I soaked them in the soda ash for 45 minutes and dyed them. It looks like a mess, dyes sort of ran into the other colors, but they are done! Can't wait til tomorrow to see the final products. I also threw in a pair of socks!:)
By the way, the tulip kit that I purchased said it would do 20 shirts, I did 2 adult, 1 child, and a pair of socks and used half of the kit....do you think I put too much dye on them, I was really trying to get in the folds.

You can also use Arm & Hammer washing soda. That's what I use because I can buy it in the laundry aisle at my local supermarket. It's sodium CARBONATE, just like the pool stuff/soda ash. :flower3:

you might want to find some really big rubber bands - I got a big bag someplace that had an assortment but some where big enough to go around mythigh without streching so they worked great -- need to do this again, think boys & sister will do it
