I loved the old Underdog TV series, but this movie appears to be utterly charmless. Guess I will just have to save my money.

It doesn't seem to have any relationship at all to the original. Underdog was a clumsy modest hero--this dog has a smart mouth.

    Hollywood Truth #2:

It doesn't take any more money to make a good movie than it takes to make a bad movie.

The difference is the effort and talent people are willing to put into the project. When people have a passion for a movie, when they are excited about making it, when they are anxious to show it off to friends and neighbors - it shows on the screen. But when people are just showing up to collect a paycheck, when the film is nothing but work - that's on the screen as well.

It sure feels that everyone at Disney Studios these days is just after the paycheck. There hasn't been a single movie (not counting those down on the outside by Bruckheimer and Walden) that even attempts to rise above the level of “embarrassment for all involved”. Throughout the company you can feel the lack of passion, the lack of ambition, the lack of pride in their work.

I wonder how much longer the audience is going to put up with it.

Almost any movie Disney makes where a dog wears clothes, drives a car or plays sports is going to be awful.

I like Underdog and think this is an *awful* idea, but if I had to choose one, I'd suffer through this before I shelled out money to watch the live-action "Sorceror's Apprentice"...... Even as just a possibility, that idea makes me nauseous. lol

:confused3 What I don't get is why make a film named "Underdog" that has nothing to do with the tv series the boomers remember. I mean if you wanted a dog superhero you could just call it superdog or wonderdog. Didn't they have to pay someone for the Underdog name?

Because it's not about the movie, it's about the marketing.

Disney has zero confidence in its ability to make popular products these days. So they, along with most of Hollywood, want a "proven" commodity. A story that has proven it's a money maker.

It's not that Disney is making movies for you Baby Boomers to relive your childhood. It's that since 'Underdog' proved popular with one set of kids - it will likely prove popular with a new set of kids. You Boomers can sit around all day in your Depends as far as Disney is concered, the Mouse wants your 12-29 year old daughters.

So it doesn't matter the movie isn't anything like the TV show, the flick is aimed for a different audience. And, Disney firmly believes, old crusty shows have to be hip-and-edgy to catch onto today's audience. Anything like that fossilized boring dull TV show is out - anything that works on the Disney Channel is in.

They should make a live-action movie out of Johnny Quest. At least that will translate to real actors.

Boy does it make me sad when I hear about movies like this. :sad2: Just thinking of what Disney used to represent, and I'm not saying they have to always do what walt would have done because I know today is a different time and hell who knows walt may have wanted to put a dog in a cape, but like AV said: "The difference is the effort and talent people are willing to put into the project." For the record I liked the new shaggy dog movie, but I know it could have been done much, much, much better.

Well, my wife, brother and I all watched the trailer. We laughed. We liked how it was setup to be like Superman. Plus it's Jason Lee aka Earl as the voice of Underdog. I'll see it at least once :)
