The Quest For 15K & 18 FP+ ~ A Marathon Weekend 2016 PTR - TR Link, Page 18

Great update. You are ahead of the game hitting 6 miles this far out already. When I ran the 10k last year I never hit 6.2 the most I trained at was 5.5. When it came to race day tho I had an amazing race. You'll do fine just don't push too hard.

Thanks for the advice! I'm hoping to hit 6.2 before the race just because it will make me less nervous. I know I don't have to do it, though, and I still have plenty of time to try.
I think that the rough 6 miler really freaked me out a little, but as long as I remember not to push myself too hard, the atmosphere of the race should make it easier.

I thought about buying a garmin but opted for an apple watch instead. I am an apple geek and the apple watch can do more than just track running so that was the biggest reasons.

I am not an apple person (the only apple thing I own is my iPod, and that's 8 years old), so an apple watch wasn't even a consideration for me. But I never would have thought that you could use it as a running watch ... I guess it makes a lot of sense!

Eep. I don't like hearing about chest pains. Never a good sign. Take care of yourself, Sarah! No more pushing yourself when you know you shouldn't! :goodvibes

Yeah, that was a bit of a scary moment ... especially when I finally stopped running and my second thought (after "yay, I'm done") was "I probably should have stopped running when the chest pains started." Thankfully it was only 2-3 times for a few seconds at a time and it was gone when I finished running.
But I definitely learned my lesson there. Chest pain = switch to walking immediately and take it easy!

Congrats on your 'new' Garmin!!! It is a very pretty pink. :cutie:

Thanks!

I have to part ways with you on the Star Wars expansion. I'm super excited! The only thing I'm going to be sad to lose is the petting zoo at DL. I hope they can just relocate it maybe? The baby goats are just the cutest.

I know a lot of people are really excited, and I understand why they're doing it. A lot of my friends are big Star Wars people, I just never got into it.
Maybe they will relocate the goats (and other animals) ... although I can't think where they'll put them. I'm really happy that they're not getting rid of Toontown, which is apparently what everyone thought would happen. I love Toontown.

Sorry for the loss of your skirt. :flower3:

Thank you.

Just joined in! Let me say I feel you on losing a favorite item of clothing, it is really the worst feeling especially when it's such a staple!

:welcome:
Thanks ... it's definitely a big loss, but thankfully I am adjusting to life without it.

Congrats on your running! Amazing accomplishments!!!

Thank you!! I really appreciate the kind words!

So is this piece of fabric a start at your race costume? I feel like you are being a bit vague here. ;)

How great that someone gifted you with their Garmin! Yay! I hope you love it and it ends up being super helpful on your runs. I haven't succumbed to the running watch trend. Yet!

I agree with being careful on your runs and also that you are really probably 10k ready now. I understand wanting to know that you can run the distance before the race. It is so crazy to me that so many half training plans only train up to 10 miles. Having to run a 5k more seems crazy. I am planning to train to 12 miles (same as I did last time).

Sorry about your skirt. I think we all know that feeling.

This piece of fabric is a piece of fabric (well, now it's two pieces). I will try to make a skirt from it. If it works, then it might be part of a costume. Or it might just be a general running skirt. We'll see what happens - a lot depends on how badly I cut it and whether I can make it work as a skirt.

I was thinking about it but planning to wait a bit ... but I couldn't say no when I got the offer! It's definitely much better than just looking at my watch and trying to figure out when I started to see how far along I am (or, more likely ... waiting for the next alert from my phone). So far it's been mostly good - my biggest problem is that half the time I don't hear it beeping.
I think I could have gone a little longer without it, but I'm glad I have it. It's not an essential for me, but it's a fun toy, and I like fun toys.

Yeah ... I was working on my half marathon training plan last week and I'm planning to do 14 miles before the race.
I understand that you don't need to run the whole distance before the race (although I like to because I'm by nature a panicker, so I'm just gonna assume I won't make it the whole distance if I've never done it before). But I can't imagine only doing 10 miles before a half ... that's barely 3/4 of the distance!
Training plans really make no sense to me.

Sorry about your skirt. I think we all know that feeling.

Thanks. It's hard, but I'm adjusting.

I'm embarrassed to say that I only checked my plan after reading this conversation. Mine goes up to 11 miles, max. :scratchin

For me, 11 miles seems like too little. But it's only an extra 2.1 miles to 13.1, and these plans obviously work or they wouldn't be out there for people to use, so ... what do I know. Hopefully it'll work out fine for you. But if it doesn't, you know to use a different plan for next time.

All of the pictures above have one thing in common – my favorite denim skirt (I know that it looks different in every picture, but that’s a combination of lighting and wear & tear). This skirt, which I have had and loved since 2010, has been to WDW 4 times and DL once. Unfortunately, it has made its way to the big giant laundry hamper in the sky. I wore it to a baseball game and discovered a hole, and it was in bad enough shape that I decided not to try patching it.
Heck, I've read enough of your TRs at this point that even I am attached to that that skirt, and associate you with it! This is sad news indeed! :sad1:

I know it probably sounds ridiculous, but I am sad. I loved this skirt. I wore it once or twice a week even after I got a new denim skirt to “replace” it. It was comfortable, had great pockets, and matched pretty much everything. I’ve had it for so long that it feels like it’s become a part of who I am, and I feel like I lost a part of myself. I’m definitely adjusting to a new normal when I pick out my clothing in the morning.
 I've felt the same when my favorite clothing item finally had to be regrettably retired. I relate, and don't think it's ridiculous at all!

I'm currently working on my pre-Disney to-do list, so I may share that in a week or two when I've got it all figured out.
Looking forward to reading that! :thumbsup2

I hope you've learned your lesson and won't be pushing yourself too hard anymore!!! You definitely don't want to have any setbacks in training! Take it easy and let it come to you.

I like the GPS watch. That's great that it worked out that you could get one second hand.

Toy Story Land (although I would have preferred a general Pixar theme)
I really like this one too. I don't know how much credibility you give to Jim Hill, but I usually find him to be one of the sources that typically has a good idea about what is going on. Anyway, I heard a Jim Hill podcast talking about the announcements at D23 and he is basically still calling it a Pixar Land and basically saying Toy Story is just phase 1 of what will come. Whether that is right or not, who knows, but I hope we do see more to come later!

Things I Am Least Excited For:
(all equally unexcited)
  • Anything Star Wars. I am sick of Star Wars everywhere. People think Frozen is taking over … but it’s nowhere near what’s happening with Star Wars
  • Hyperspace Mountain at DL
  • Pandora
Ok, I like the Star Wars land and I'm excited for it. You're right about Star Wars taking over. Especially with the line up of movies they have announced to come out over the next few years. We're going to be seeing a lot of it. I'm indifferent about Hyperspace Mountain... I think it would be cool to experience, but I'm really ok with them just leaving Space Mountain as Space Mountain all the time.

As for Pandora... still not excited about it.

I guess they figure at that distance there's not a lot of difference between miles 11, 12 and 13. Not sure I agree with that. But I'll find out, lol.

I'm vaguely excited for Hyperspace Mountain. It's gotta be better than Ghost Galaxy for Halloween. :sad2:

Definitely sad ... especially because I wanted to wear it yesterday! I'm slowly learning to adjust to my new normal.

 I've felt the same when my favorite clothing item finally had to be regrettably retired. I relate, and don't think it's ridiculous at all!

Thanks.
It's nice to know I'm not alone in feeling this way about clothing.

Looking forward to reading that! :thumbsup2

I'm hoping to get it posted later this week or over the weekend!

I hope you've learned your lesson and won't be pushing yourself too hard anymore!!! You definitely don't want to have any setbacks in training! Take it easy and let it come to you.

Sure. I wasn't planning on going out tomorrow and just running until I felt like I had to stop.
I've definitely been a little more careful since then. And I just finished writing up my training plan for the next year or so, and I'm definitely trying to take things at a slower pace.

I like the GPS watch. That's great that it worked out that you could get one second hand.

Thanks! It was definitely a great situation and I was glad I was able to get it.

Eh. I see Jim Hill as being about as reliable as a low-level CM (which is likely where he gets some of his information).
That said ... I think he could be right on this. It makes a lot of sense to put in a Pixar Land that could continue to grow as they make new movies, and creating a land based on one well known franchise (that has a new movie coming out within the next few years) isn't a bad way to start.

Ok, I like the Star Wars land and I'm excited for it. You're right about Star Wars taking over. Especially with the line up of movies they have announced to come out over the next few years. Yeah ... what are the odds that this next Star Wars movie is a flop and they decide not to release the rest of them? (I know, highly unlikely)
I'm not wild about the overlays in general ... and I love Space Mountain. To me it's a classic and they shouldn't mess with it.

As for Pandora... still not excited about it.

I think I have yet to see anyone who is excited about it.
They must be out there somewhere, right?

I guess they figure at that distance there's not a lot of difference between miles 11, 12 and 13. Not sure I agree with that. But I'll find out, lol.

To me every mile is a big deal, so I don't get it. But at that point 2 miles is less than a 20% increase, so it's probably not too bad.

I'm vaguely excited for Hyperspace Mountain. It's gotta be better than Ghost Galaxy for Halloween. :sad2:

I'm not wild about the overlays in general ... but I don't know that I've ever seen Ghost Galaxy. I don't think I've ever been to DL around Halloween ... just December and February. So really what I hate is the It's a Small World Christmas overlay.

I am miserably behind on trip reports (including my own), but I am going to do my best to catch up here. :)

Love your arrival day (no park ticket) plan.

I am a monorail lover, so I totally get your idea to use it to get from EP to MK. Now, I know that when you go MK to EP, it takes you through Future World in EP but I can't remember about the other direction because we rarely go that way. Although seeing our arrival time at MCO, it could be pretty tight get there and make it to the MK area in time for Wishes.

Hanging out at a monorail resort, and watching Wishes from the area is brilliant.

ETA: I have since read about your arrival flight time and will be interested to hear what you actually do when you get there.

Cute clothes and although I am not a bag person, I really like the one you got. The size and pattern both look perfect. I should look into getting something like that because I have a single purse that I have used for the past 3-4 years. Not a Disney-themed one, so I should add one to my very lonely stable of bags.

Moving on to the next update now...

I did notice both princess meals on your itinerary, before you mentioned it. That made me smile!

A pre-opening breakfast is at the top of my Disney bucket list!

I can't remember what your feelings are on the counter service eateries at Disney, and how easy it is to follow your dietary restrictions at them.

Happy to read about your flights. It is a good feeling to have that piece taken care of.

Do you know what annoys me??? It seems like whenever I book flights that I love, the airline changes the time! Sometimes it is just a few minutes (always when we have trips in the 6 am hour). On our Yellowstone trip, they changed the departure of one of our connecting flights, both ways and we had less than an hour to make our connection in the busy Minneapolis/St. Paul airport and we literally had to run from one terminal to another. With pneumonia. Good times!

I am in awe and have the utmost respect for dedicated runners :worship::worship::worship:, but I have to admit, I kind of skimmed your running update. The only running I have done in my life was the aforementioned running through the airport. Do you know the Facebook meme... If you see me running, you better start running too because a zombie is chasing me? That really is me.

But I walk wicked fast! Especially in Disney.

:cool1:

Thank you so much for sharing your religious adherences with us. The Q&A format was great.

Once again, I admire your dedication to your faith.

::yes::

So for your running update- sorry that you pushed yourself too hard, but now you know. The Garmin watch sounds really cool! How nice that you got it from another DISer. I am amazed at the generosity and friendships fostered on (some of) these boards.

Interesting overview of the D23 announcements of coming attractions. I was attached to my computer on Saturday and following along with announcements as they came out (some friends were actually there). So on Monday morning, my 17 year old son Nate comes downstairs and says

"Did you hear about Star Wars land at Disney?"

Um. Duh! and then I told him about some of the other plans. He looked totally dejected. He thought he had scooped me.

So Hyperspace Mtn is only at DL? Guess I may have been scooped on that.

I'm intrigued by the Soarin' over the World. I haven't been able to figure out if the original Soarin' Over California is going away entirely, and if it will be the same at both parks. It would be nice if they showed both and you could choose the version you want to see.

Sorry to hear about your favorite skirt :(

Yay on Beth doing well in Physics! Last I read (which was just last night, but several updates ago), she was finding it tough.

:thumbsup2

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and read!

Thanks for the info - I just assumed it went through Future World in both directions. I'll have to look into that.
I really like my idea, but with the later than expected flight (I thought we'd take a flight that left an hour earlier, but it was more expensive), I think it'll be a decision we make once we're on the ground. If the flight makes good time and we get to the resort quickly, we may be able to do it, but if not, we'll have to scrap the plan and do something else (probably Downtown Disney).

I should look into getting something like that because I have a single purse that I have used for the past 3-4 years. Not a Disney-themed one, so I should add one to my very lonely stable of bags.

Thanks! It really is a great bag (I use it a lot) and I'm excited to take it to Disney.
(And I have like 3-4 bags that I rotate through that are around that size, plus bigger bags, plus two backpacks ... I like shopping).

I did notice both princess meals on your itinerary, before you mentioned it. That made me smile!

princess:
We really do love princesses, so we're excited about the possibility of doing two princess meals!

A pre-opening breakfast is at the top of my Disney bucket list!

Mine too! I was very excited that we were able to get that ADR!

I can't remember what your feelings are on the counter service eateries at Disney, and how easy it is to follow your dietary restrictions at them.

There's one CS location at each park (2 at Epcot) that has Kosher food available on demand. Our favorite is Cosmic Ray's at MK (the food is the same at all of them, we just like the environment at Cosmic Ray's). The other options are Pizzafari at AK, ABC Commisary at DHS, and Electric Umbrella (I think - we've never been there) and Liberty Inn at Epcot.
Other than that, some places have pre-packaged stuff we can grab, but not much. We tend to bring a lot of our own food just because it's easier.

Happy to read about your flights. It is a good feeling to have that piece taken care of.

Thanks. It's definitely nice to not be checking flight prices every day!

With pneumonia. Good times!

That sounds like lots of fun. We've been pretty lucky with not having our flight times changed too significantly - although it helps that we almost always fly direct, so we don't have to worry about missing connecting flights. I'd hate to have to run between terminals ... and doing it while sick sounds even worse!

I am in awe and have the utmost respect for dedicated runners :worship::worship::worship:, but I have to admit, I kind of skimmed your running update. I grew up running (pre-knee problems), so it was never something too weird for me. I totally get that other people have no interest and don't really care too much about the running updates. That's why I try to add in some non-running updates too ... even though most of what's going on now is the running (two months until FP+ day, and then the plans can really pick up!).
But I definitely know people that if you see them running, something's chasing them!

But I walk wicked fast! Especially in Disney.

And that is all that really matters - getting around Disney fast around to get things done!

Thank you so much for sharing your religious adherences with us. The Q&A format was great.

Once again, I admire your dedication to your faith.

::yes::

Thank you! I love being able to share some of the lesser-known (and occasionally weird) aspects of my faith with others.

So for your running update- sorry that you pushed yourself too hard, but now you know. The Garmin watch sounds really cool! How nice that you got it from another DISer. I am amazed at the generosity and friendships fostered on (some of) these boards.

I really was so amazed by her generosity. Everyone I've encountered here on the DIS is really great (I've been lucky that way) and I'm so amazed at the kindness of people out there!

That's hysterical! I guess now he knows he can't outscoop the Disney master!
(My father did the same thing to me - he said something about "did you hear what they're building at Disney?" and I just started rattling off information).

So Hyperspace Mtn is only at DL? Guess I may have been scooped on that.

I think it's DL only - that's the impression I got. And I happen to like DL Space Mountain better. So I'm double not excited.

I'm intrigued by the Soarin' over the World. I haven't been able to figure out if the original Soarin' Over California is going away entirely, and if it will be the same at both parks. It would be nice if they showed both and you could choose the version you want to see.

I think that having a choice would be awesome - but I'm guessing they'll just get rid of the old film. Oh well, hopefully I'll get a chance to see it one more time before they change!

Sorry to hear about your favorite skirt :(

Thanks.

Yay on Beth doing well in Physics! Last I read (which was just last night, but several updates ago), she was finding it tough.

She struggled a lot at the beginning, but she definitely improved as the semester went on and ended up doing well.
So far she's not loving Chemistry, but hopefully, like Physics, it'll get better. Plus, once she's done with Chemistry, it's almost Disney time!

I posted over on the Transportation Board this morning

I should know this. I am embarrassed I don't know this...

The monorail from the TTC to EP goes through the EPCOT before it drops off passengers. Very cool.

Does the mono from EP to TTC do the same? I'm thinking no.

Thanks!

Nope. It runs from TTC to Epcot, going through Epcot proper on it's way to the station/platform. When it leaves the Epcot platform, it goes directly to the TTC.

4 Months: A To-Do List
(sorry, no pictures in this one - I've found that on the DIS, pictures and lists don't mix very well)

We’re officially less than 4 months out from arrival day, and while I wish I was on my way back from Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend (which would have been fairly impossible because of my busy schedule this weekend, but a girl can dream...), instead I’m just sitting around looking at my Disney To-Do list. I figured now’s as good a time as ever to share what’s on my radar for the next few months:

  • DVC Sales Pitch – We (well, Beth) got something in the mail saying that if we did an over-the-phone DVC Sales Tour we could get a $25 Disney Gift Card to use on our trip. It’s like free money, so I’ll do it when I get a chance.
  • Call Magical Express – We still haven’t called up and added our flight info (yes, I know that there’s apparently a way to do it online, but I prefer doing it by phone). Yes, we did book the flights about a month and a half ago. If I don’t have to do something ASAP, it tends to take a while to get done.
  • Order Memory Maker – We’re about 99% sure we’re getting it, we just have to actually order it. I’m waiting a bit just to see what the camera situation is … there is a very small possibility that I’d get a new camera, which would change things.
  • Add Kosher to ADRs – This requires a call to Disney Dining (I really wish there was a way to do it online). It’s not a hard procedure, but I still don’t love doing it (especially because some CMs are more clueless than others), so I wanted to delay it until we made a final decision on which ADRs to keep.
  • Dumbo Running Skirt – As of right now, I’m dressing up/DisneyBounding as Dumbo for the 10K. Finding running skirts that are long enough for me is not so easy, so I have to figure out if I can find a skirt I like (or get one custom made for a decent price), or if I’m making one myself. I actually have the gray/pink fabric that I’m working with right now, and if I can make this skirt work, then I’ll buy yellow and red for Dumbo (the plan is to do three tiers - red, yellow, red, like Dumbo's ruffle). If not … my options are buy a gray skirt and do something else red/yellow, see if I can get something custom made, or deal with the fact that my skirt won't match my outfit.
  • Paint Yellow MagicBand – My yellow MB got super dirty last year (apparently long-sleeve black shirt + heat = dirty MB) and I have had trouble cleaning it (/I’m too lazy to try anything other than water), so I want to cover it in gold glitter nail polish. I’m only going to do one or two coats, so the yellow will still show through, but hopefully it will be sparkly and not just dirty.
  • Calculations on Stay/Play/Dine – I’m about 95% sure that Stay/Play/Dine was offered last year over Marathon Weekend. We’d have to upgrade to the regular dining plan (Pop comes with QSDP, which doesn’t pay for our planned TS meals) and we don’t really buy too much food, so I’m not sure if it will make sense for us – I want to sit down at some point in time and do the math on it, and figure out at what point we might break even or save money.

There are lots of things that will be added to this list (like packing, grocery shopping, and deciding on/preparing our 5K costumes), but this is what I’ve got on my plate for now. Lots of fun, right?

You really like to procrastinate... :rolleyes1 :rotfl:

Good luck finally getting things taken care of, eventually. I actually don't blame you for putting off the things you're putting off. It isn't like any of it is super fun or exciting.

Say whaaaaaaaaaaaaat! Dude, put me on this list! I want free money, too!

Order Memory Maker – We’re about 99% sure we’re getting it, we just have to actually order it. I’m waiting a bit just to see what the camera situation is … there is a very small possibility that I’d get a new camera, which would change things.
I love Memory Make. I LOVE IT. And think of all the time it will save you at the parks. You won't need to stop and pick out the photos you like, because they'll ALL be yours! Plus you get the fun little Tower of Terror and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train videos! :thumbsup2

Add Kosher to ADRs – This requires a call to Disney Dining (I really wish there was a way to do it online). It’s not a hard procedure, but I still don’t love doing it (especially because some CMs are more clueless than others), so I wanted to delay it until we made a final decision on which ADRs to keep.
I'm 110% with you on this. Why go through the hassle of adding to ADRs that you're not even going to keep? I would wait, too! ::yes::

Dumbo Running Skirt – As of right now, I’m dressing up/DisneyBounding as Dumbo for the 10K. Have you checked around on Etsy? I feel almost certain I've seen skirts like this on there! :scratchin

Oooh, please post pics when finished! I'm a sucker for sparklies! :cutie:

THAT SOUNDS LIKE LOADS OF FUN! MY IDEA OF A RIP-ROARIN' PLANNING GOOD TIME! :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:
