I feel this way all the time...and feel should apply to everyday life...NOT JUST VACATION!!!

Cell Phones...the Cigerettes of the 21st Century.
:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Interesting tie-in to my trip. We were eating at 50's Prime Time Cafe. The place is themed to look like your mom's kitchen from the 50's, and the waitstaff yells at you for things like having your elbows on the table. I happen to notice our waitress (probably in her late 50s and very stern-looking) sit down in the bench two tables over. The family was a mom, dad, and two DDs - probably 10 and 12ish. Both mom and dad were messing around with their iPhones. The waitress starts laying into them about how they are in Disney with these two precious little girls, and they're nose deep into their phones. Mom says she was checking the weather and gets visibly embarrassed and puts it away. The dad, however, just has this look like "get out of my face and let me get back to my email." What a tool.
Man Law!
PrimeTime is one of our favorite restaurants! Once when we ate there, I had to clear the table next to us and I don't remember doing anything wrong! It did give all the kids in the room a good laugh, which was great!

But this subject did get me to wondering what does everyone here do for a living?
I'm a technician in our microelectronics research group. It's not very exciting but I do get to use some interesting equipment, like a UV, FTIR and a Scanning Electron Microscope. Sometimes I feel like Abby on NCIS! (Only in a guy sorta way :lmao:). For excitement, my DW and I used to be Search and Rescue volunteers. We were both K-9 Handlers among other things. Unfortunately, we "retired" from that about 6 years ago; one of our dogs passed away and the other is now almost 14. Now, I get my excitement from my grandkids and reading these posts! :)

am I the only one here that wishes their ticker didnt have triple digits before their trip and seems like it is not moving???I was thinking of putting up a fake ticker to try and trick myself into thinking my trip would come sooner:rotfl2::rotfl2:
I wish I had a ticker! I doubt that I'll have another one for at least a few years, which is really tough. :sad2:

Wow guys I finally had some time to read through some of the older posts and get caught up with whats going on. I like that someone came out and asked what the other dad's occupations are. Most of the dad's know that I am an oilfield consultant. I basically run all of the day to day operations of a well site, although I recently accepted an offer with a new company to oversee drilling in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. I also saw that a couple of dads might be visiting the World at the end of May through early June. If anyone is there during that time I would love to meet up and chat.

Teachable moment!
Our last trip, a mom with her own double stroller (and 2 munchkins) was trying to get onto the All Star bus after Illumi-Nations ended, but her stroller wouldn't fold up. I got my wife and 3 boys onto the bus, then took my 6 year old to help get her shopping onto the bus, and I grabbed her stroller, and she could get just her kids. When we got to her hotel, i made my oldest help get her things, again, she had her 2 stroller-aged kids. Then we rode the rest of the way to ASMo, and 6 yr old said, "Dad, if we didn't know her, why did we carry her stuff?" "Pete, it was the right thing to do. When you see someone that needs help, and you can help them, you do it."
"oh, that's easy! I can do that. Thanks" I'm sure he'd forgotten by the morning, but i hope the lesson is in there somewhere. And, I sent 2 text pictures while with my kids. One gloating castle pic to a former cast member friend, and one Epcot ball pic to the same former cast member. When the oldest asked what I was doing, I said I was trying to help a friend share the magic that wasn't here, not just straight ignore. I'll be better in December. I promise.

Great job teaching them young! :thumbsup2

Ok guys - I have a proposal for a new MAN LAW here. There is ONE THING THAT REALLY BUGGED ME ON THIS TRIP, (and actually bugged me quite a bit on our family trip in January, but I failed to mention it then) - ....... when you are traveling with your family to any Disney park, for any reason - be PRESENT with them, be ENGAGED with them, and for heaven's sake, be RESPONSIVE to them. GET OFF your stupid electronic devices!

Sure, texting someone to arrange a meeting place is ok once or twice, or to tell the other half of your party where you are since they didn't want to go on some attraction with you so that you can get re-connected is ok too... but otherwise - hang it up, put it away, or hide it if you must... but don't use it, constantly, while your poor wife deals with screaming, tantruming, hollering, sleeping, or even otherwise well-behaved kids.

MAN LAW!!!! However I will say that I am connected to my Blackberry alot because of my jobs. It does not and will not take time from my family. That is unless we (the kids and I) are getting updates on the Eagles or Phillies.:thumbsup2

ok guys this cell phone talk is starting to make me feel bad a bout taking mine when I go away. But Unfortunately I have to my name is on the company so if something major goes wrong guess who is flying home to make it right. But this subject did get me to wondering what does everyone here do for a living?

I will start it off by saying I own my own business since1999 incorporated in 2001 .I specialize in wheelchair accessibility. I do wheelchair accessible kitchens and baths, widen doorways, build ramps, install stair chairs for the disabled or elderly, install wheelchair lifts and residential elevators, grab bars you name it.I also do any kind of construction associated with the wheelchair lift for example decks, doors and concrete. And of course I have to service any mechanical equipment I install plus i service equipment from other installers. Well enough about me how about you guys?

I work at a consulting firm that deals mainly with municipal and industrial engineering and environmental issues. I work as a municipal client manager and deal with municipal sanitary sewer issues. (Yep I deal in crap all day!). I am also an elected offical in my Borough. That seems to take as much time as my full time job. Then I also have the best job in the world, being the father of three great kids!!!:thumbsup2

I thought about this after I posted that some people dont have a ticker so I should be happy.Sorry

Yeah Carl look at my ticker!:lmao:

Matt, Are you getting involved in gas drilling in the marcellus shale?

I manage a computer support desk that handles the computers for 3500 auto parts stores. It's pretty much a typical corporate weasel kind of job but I worked on the phones for 15 years before getting promoted so most of my team knows I've got their back. Due to some cutbacks I had to walk 3 of my team out the door last Friday so my heart isn't really in it right now, 32 days can't come soon enough.

On the whole cell thing, the company picks up the tab so I am not allowed to turn it off, I have told them though that even at full volume and vibrate I can't hear it go off in crowds so I'll check it every couple of hours. DW and I have a deal where I get DS ready to go in the morning while she gets ready and while we are at the parks I check messages while she takes him to the bathroom. If I need to call into the office she takes him on something that takes 10 or 15 minutes like spaceship earth or tomorrowland transit while I clear it up. The secret to the whole thing is I've told my director that since I have to take time out of my vacation to handle issues every 2 or 3 days that they should have been able to cover, I tack an extra day on the vacation. The core people on my team that have worked with me since the beginning know exactly what types of issues to escalate, so that I have to be called, but will only take 15 minutes or so to resolve so I get my extra day.

I am a Credit Officer for a private, non-profit financial institution working specifically with independent non-denominational churches (niche lending to be sure!). We are a nearly 60 yr old nationwide company, and I handle all lending transactions from MO/IA/MN eastward & southeastward into GA/FL (26 states!). I also work with our international customers in Canada, Chile, Kosovo & hopefully soon to be New Zealand. I've been with them for 9 1/2 yrs, beginning in the HQ in So Cal but moving out here to IN nearly 8 yrs ago.

Many, if not most in the company live with their phones on all the time - a standard set by our co president, BUT...I have taken a stand through the years by which I turn mine off on the weekends and when on vacation . There',s nothing so urgent in lending that someone else on my team can't handle it on my behalf or just wait til I return. Some staffers whose kids are now parents themselves disagree with me, but I just don't care. My kids will only be young once. I will have plenty of time after they are off on their own to be so customer-focused...for now I'm going to continue to be family-focused.

I work for a small consulting company in the DC Metro area. I do mostly database work, with some security work thrown in, as well. Because it's a small company, I have worn and continue to wear several hats.

I do occasionally have to take calls on vacation when something goes screwy. However, some of the guys on here might have had to give the same sign-off line I had last July: "Yeah, I'll have to call you back, I'm about to get on a roller coaster..."

Hi Gang!
Please add me to the list. I should have joined this years ago. This looks like a lot of fun. BTW - I hope you don't mind, but I believe there would be a lot of Dad's on the DIS Unplugged board who would be interested in joining this group. I'm going to extend an invitation to them by starting a thread on that board and link it to this thread.

Hey Fellas!!

I have been away a lot lately, I have had a few things going on in my life that has kept me busy.

First off, let me say welcome to all the new Dads, I look forward to getting to know you all.

All of you who are on trips or just getting back, I hope you are having or had a great time and I am getting caught up on TR's. Speaking of TR's I will have an update soon as well.......I must finish before that other guy!!:rotfl2:

Funny that the conversation of what all of do for a living has come up, this is what has kept me busy. I am currently a Buyer for a refrigeration and A/C wholesaler and have been with my company for 12 years. But this is all going to change, I have been in the Food Industry for just as long in a part time basis. I am taking the plung and quitting my job and taking over my in-laws family restaurant. They have decided to retire and I will be buying the business. I went to night school 5 years ago and completed my Chef Training and have been working at restaurants part time to get my hours in. This has been a passion of mine for years and now its time to jump in with both feet.

Wish me luck guys! :goodvibes The only downfall is the limited time I will have to hang out on the Dis, I guess I will have to move to the night shift with some of the other fellas.

Welcome Aaron!! Glad you found us.

I am a Frozen Food Specialist for a major supermarket, I am in charge of ordering, packing out, maintaining temps, deicing cases, product resets, damages etc. We carry about 1800+ items.

My 2 holding boxes are -30, and a normal case on the floor is -10, Ice cream is at -20.

I do have a tip for the Dads on how to have the coldest beer in town on your next BBQ. I'll post it closer to Father's Day.

If so, add me to the list. Right now I'm at OKW with my 7YO grandson (by marriage) and we are both having a great time. Oh, and I guess the womenfolk are too. :thumbsup2

Christopher, what is the the Dis Silver Sponser by your name, I've see silver & gold ones on threads but have no clue to what it is:confused3

Then congratulations are in order!! It's not often that folks get paid to do what they are passionate about, so good for you. And good luck!! What kind of restaurant? I skipped breakfast and now I'm hungry.

As for the occupation discussion, I'm a buyer for a big public auto retailer. I handle some of our new car franchises and figure out what cars to put on the lot and what kind of prices to put on them. Not too exciting, but every now and then I get to ride in some sweet cars when the manufacturers put on their shows in Vegas. It pays the bills and for the most part I'm able to leave work at work.

If the cell phone rings (which isn't often), I know it's important. Now when the cell phone rings on vacation, I... I.... well, I don't know what I do. I don't go on vacation often enough to have a response for that. And hopefully, in December the phone won't ring and I still won't have a response!
