Well, thanks to the advice on these boards, these are two new restaurants we're going to try next trip. Believe it or not, until today, I had never heard of either so they are complete unknowns to me. :o I've been to www.allearsnet.com and looked at the menus and made the decision to try them.

Now, I'm hoping you kind and wonderful folks will tell me all about them. The good, the bad and the ugly....(and hopefully the wonderful):p

So, lay it on me....are these good choices?

We really enjoy the Plaza Restaurant. Food and service were really good- and I would return there for lunch. Not a really huge menu but what is offered is good! And desserts are yummy.

Big River- I have never been to this one because over the years, I've seen nothing but negative reviews.Usually, I like to make my own mind up regardless of reviews, but for some reason, this place never appealled to me. Id rather go over to Beaches & Cream where I know its always great!
If you do a seach, Im sure you will get some info. on Big River.

Plaza Restaurant: Love this one and try to make it here at least once per trip. We love the turkey sandwiches and try to leave enough room to split a yummy sundae for dessert. The atmosphere is charming and makes a great break during a busy park day. We've even bumped into the "Mayor" a couple of times, helping people celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

Big River Grille: Ok, even though we often stay at Boardwalk, we are not fond of this restaurant. We tried it once and had lousy service. The seating area feels cramped and the food was lower-quality than the nearby ESPN Club (better burgers at ESPN!). We didn't really find anything special here. We have a John Harvard's up here near Boston that we go to for brew sampling. The brew sampling experience at Big River Grille was far less enticing.

    Hope that helps. Have fun!

I couldn't agree with you more, Allicat. Everyone has their own opinions and tastes. In these forums (and others) I constantly see people putting down some of our favorite places, all while raving about restaurants that we're not too fond of. It just comes down to a matter of personal taste.

The menu at Big River looks absolutely wonderful to me......as does the atmosphere. Maybe the food will end up being not-too-good, but I won't know till I try (I can't imagine some of those dishes being "bad" though).
On another thread, someone mentioned that they discovered Big River Grille last year and have been back 5 times since. They apparently like it. Everything I've seen and read makes it a "must try" for us this trip. It might even wind up being one of those little-known "gems" for us to enjoy.

We go to Big River every trip to WDW. We usually go for lunch and will often go multiple times during a single trip. They brew their own beers on site and they are quite good. Food is pretty good - it's not terribly fancy, but it is good solid fare. They have a mahi mahi sandwich that my wife adores and a BBQ chicken sandwich that I love. The chicken quesadilla is also pretty good. Service has always been good for us - quick and efficient. It is somewhat cramped inside, but they also have a number of tables set up outside as well. All in all, a very enjoyable restaurant.

We love the Plaza Restuarant! It's a great break in the day. It's a very small restaurant, somewhat limited menu, but we always go back.

It's a great change of pace from park food. We usually share a sandwich, each get a cup of soup and then share a sundae or a malt. Yummy!!

The Plaza serves very good food and the portions are generous. I had the Rueban and it was delicious. Our service was excellent. Our server talked us into trying the ice cream, and we were not disappointed. The decor is lovely, a refreshing break from the parks.

Is the Plaza a sit down resturant or counter service? I've never tried this place but you all are making me curious to give it a try. I'm still not exactally sure where it is, but I'll look it up on the park map. Thanks.

It's a sit down restaurant. PSs are recommended.

If we keep this up, it won't be "our little secret" anymore. Hahaha.

    Seriously, go there.....enjoy!

Big River Grille isn't a bastion of fine food by any means, but if you stick to things like their burgers and that excellet meatloaf, it's fine. Tho their selection of microbrews isn't overwhelming, the variety should have something you like (my favorite is their Wowzer's Wheat). In any case, it's better than the usual suspects they serve at ESPN.
Service isn't particularly great and the inside is rather drab. A table outside on the Boardwalk (weather permitting) would probably be best.

I was just thinking the same thing Parrothd LOL. We make it a habit to do lunch at the Plaza at least once during our trip. The menu is basic but it's nice to get inside and relax when the MK is hectic. The food and service have always been good for us.

We ate at both in December. We like the "brew burger" at Big River, it's always been good. We sat inside and it was cold. I like to sit outside but we never seem to get a good day for it. We ate at the Plaza before MVMCP, I think I had the club sandwich, it was pretty good. Nice out of the way place. It's small, PS's are a must on busy nights. One time we tried to walkup on a Saturday night and it was a 2 hour wait.

We ate at Big River Grille when we were there a couple of weeks ago. DH & I had salads and had a sidewalk table w/DS & DD. The salads were nothing to rave about. $10+ for each salad and very overrated. The table next to us even sent theirs back.

If others are recommending the burgers or meatloaf, definitely opt for one of those choices!!

The Plaza is great - great sandwiches and wonderful ice cream. Friendly staff, right in the middle of MK.

Big River Grille - Not so great. I guess the meatloaf is okay if it is thawed in the middle. They served it to my husband ice cold in the middle. Service was terrible, finally seated us at a dirty table. Hostess was rude, manager was as rude. Never again for this place.

I love the Plaza for lunch or a light dinner.

We tried Big River Grille once. As Uncleromulus noted, it is drab. We were seated across from the restrooms despite the fact that the restaurant was virtually empty. Our table had crumbs on it and there were napkins on the floor. We sat for a couple of minutes while the waitstaff chatted with each other. At that point, my sons and I decided to find another spot to have lunch. I don't think we were even given menus. Too many other great restaurants at WDW....we won't be back!
