Day 3 2/2/01 – My birthday and our full day at the Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom did not open until 9 a.m. this morning, but I still woke up at 6 a.m. (after not going to sleep until 1 a.m.). I let Aaron sleep and watched some of the Disney propaganda programs on the resort tv. Aaron woke up around 7:30 and after showering and having a quick breafast of fruit cups and grapes, we were out the door by 8:30. Since it was my birthday, I wanted another one of the great cinnamon buns from the food court and Aaron wanted coffee. Food court was mobbed with cheerleaders and it was loud. Fortunately we did watch how much we drank last night and didn’t have to deal with a hangover. I went to the bakery only to be told that they had run out of cinnamon buns. Damn those cheerleaders I thought, until I saw that they had Snickers cheesecake. I ordered a piece and it took what seemed like forever because I think cheesecake was still frozen and they had a hard time cutting a piece. They then came back with a real small piece that looked like they had to use an axe to cut it with. I was going to complain until Aaron reminded me that I was supposed to be on a diet and didn’t really need a big piece of cheesecake and just because it was my birthday didn’t make it right. I agreed and didn’t make a scene and the cheesecake was really good.

Small crowd of people waiting for the bus to the Magic Kingdom and we did have to stand on the bus, but that was okay. By the time we finally got to the Magic Kingdom it was 9:30, but that was okay as there was not the usual huge line waiting to get in. We walked down Main Street and I started to get hungry again. We popped into the bakery and I was about to order one of their big cinnamon buns until I saw the huge cupcakes with blue frosting! I ordered one and Aaron got a chocolate/chocolate chip muffin. Cupcake was great (couldn’t remember the last time I had had a cupcake that big before) and Aaron said his muffin was very good.

Weather wise, it was actually nice out. Still overcast, but not as cold as it was yesterday. We made our way over to Splash Mountain with the idea of getting a Fast Pass for later. CM told us there was no line, so we decided to go. We walked right on and had a great ride. Love this ride, but did notice that a few of the animatronics were not working. We did not get too wet and as we saw the Fast Pass time was now between 11-Noon we got one so we could come back later. We then went on BTMR with only about a five minute wait. Another one of my favorite attractions. Can’t wait until they install Fast Pass here as this was the only time we got to ride this on this trip.

We then wanted to go see the Lion King show (we had skipped it on our last few visits) and I was actually disappointed to find that it was closed! Made our way over to Tomorrow land and walked right on Space Mountain. Line for Buzz Lightyear was now at 20 minute stand-by, so we went over to Liberty Square and were able to walk right on the Haunted Mansion. After that, we went to Adventure Land and walked right on Jungle Cruise, checked out the new Aladin Ride (couldn’t see much, but we did run into Aladin infront of the new Agrabah Village and got our pictures taken with him), then went over to catch the Tiki Bird show.

We were hungry again (our lunch reservations were not until 1:30). We ordered some nachos from the Mexican restaurant over by Pirates of the Carribian and they were terrible! Real bad chilli poured over chips. I only nibbled and we ended up throwing most of it away. We noticed we were now able to use our Fast Passes for Splash Mountain and I was amazed that even at noon you didn’t need FP and could still just walk on. After Splash Mountain, we went on POC and then made our way over to Fantasy Land as I wanted to ride Peter Pan.

Of course there was a 30 minute wait for all the rides in Fantasy Land (there was even a line for Small World). We spotted some of the characters from Alice in Wonderland over by the tea cups and we got our pictures with Tweedle-Dee and the Mad Hatter. It was now 1 and I thought we should just go check in at the castle and see if we could get in early. We checked in and Aaron mentioned it was my birthday. We waited in the great hall, but no characters were there (I had heard that the Fairy Godmother is there sometimes during non-breakfast hours).

We were called at exactly 1:30 and we made our way up the stairs to the restaurant. This was the first time for both of us eating in the castle and it was great. As soon as we were seated, CM came up to our table and said she heard that someone at our table was celebrating a birthday and then threw Mickey confetti all over our table (little girl at table next to us was mad that she didn’t get any confetti so I threw some over her way). Menu was a bit limited, but everything sounded good. Aaron got the prime rib and I have a pasta dish with chicken and olives. Aaron thought the prime rib was great and I really liked what I had. We also got a basket of hard rolls with butter that came in the shape of Mickey’s head. Then, our waiter came out and presented me with a special birthday desert (poppy seed cake with vanilla ice cream covered with chocolate sauce and whipped cream and a chocolate crown on top). Waiter and Aaron then sang “Happy Birthday” to me as I blew out candle. I was going to share desert with Aaron (it was pretty bid) until waiter came up with tray of deserts and Aaron got a huge piece of white chocolate cheesecake (now this was the size I wanted this morning!).

After lunch, we decided to go back to the resort for a quick nap and head back to the Magic Kingdom by 5 and have dinner and watch the Electric Light Parade. I quickly fell asleep and forgot to set the alarm. I woke up and it was dark. Looked at the clock and it was 6:30! Got Aaron up and went to catch the bus to the Magic Kingdom. We got on the first bus and it was filled with cheerleaders! We were able to get two seats together and it was so funny listening to the mindless chatter of these girls (didn’t really have a choice). These girls talked a mile a minute about boys, Nsync, cheering, parents and rules, etc. Ah, to be young!

By the time we got to the Magic Kingdom it was 7:30 p.m. and the parade started at 8. We both were hungry and decided to skip parade and go get dinner. We ate at Cosmic Ray’s and it was pretty good. Never eaten there before and loved the animatronic space alien that sang and played keyboard while we ate. We then walked right on Buzz Lightyear (Aaron creamed me as he somehow got over 900,000 points). We then went on Alien Encounter and noticed for the first time that actress Kathy Najimi (famous for Sister Act) played one of the alien doctors in the film.

We then headed to Fantasy Land and walked right on Winnie the Pooh, Snow White, Small World, and finally Peter Pan. Caught the tail end of the parade, walked around for a bit, then decided to leave. As we waited for a bus back to the resort, we were able to see some of the fireworks from the 9 p.m. show.

Got back to the resort in time to catch “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” then went to bed.

Up next: Full day at Epcot and our “drinking around the world” game!
