Trying to decide if we should start booking trips during Star Wars Weekends??

What "special Staar Wars things" are going on? Is it only in DHS? What makes it so good?? How are the crowds???????

Thanks!

If you or anyone you love is a Star Wars fan, Star Wars Weekends are a DO NOT MISS Disney experience! Here is a helpful website:

SWW only takes place at DHS on the weekends they list, and most of the characters and activities stay in the area where Star Tours is and over near Toy Story Mania. We've been to SWW twice so far, but I would love to go every year. My DS11 and I are both HUGE SW fans, my DH and DD7 not quite so much, but we all have a great time anyway. There are characters everywhere. There are meet n greets with many of them, but also a lot of them just roam the streets. The Hyperspace Hoopla show near the end of the day is absolutely hilarious. ANd if your a very serious fan, there are celebs from the movies and other SW universe productions that do autograph signings, but you have to get there VERY early to get a ticket to get to do that. ALso the special SW parade that they do is great as well. There is a ton of special SWW merchandise for the collector. It is always VERY crowded, so if you decide to go, you need a game plan. But believe me, for the SW fan, it's well worth it! ALso, just a note, the newly reimagined Star Tours will be opening this year right at SWW time, so I think it will be even more crowded this year than usual.

Thanks Stinkerbell317...love your name btw! LOL
I am trying to figure out if DS5 is ready for the big Star Wars weekend and what he can do that's worth it~Thanks, I'm going to check out the link!

We won't go this year, because we are already going in early May and October...but I definitely am considering it for next year!

My son was HUGE into Star Wars, so we did a SWW trip in May 2009 covering 2 weekends. He was 6 at the time and had a blast. I am a bit of a Stars Was fan myself so i too enjoyed everything that wsa offered. All the meets wth the various characters were amazing. THey have great shows and some celebrities. It is definitely a must do for any star wars fan. So much fun. As for the crowds....its really not all that bad and i dont think that it has any effect on the other parks...so its just the couple of days that you are at HS that you will feel the crowd...but nothing major.

I think 5 is a great age for SWW! Also, where in Chicago are you? We're out in Algonquin, NW of the city.

OMG...we are in Huntley! LOL That is so crazy!!!!! We are in Algonquin at the Commans and up on randall ALL THE TIME!!! Such a small world!!!!! We love it up here! I was originally from Dallas, and I was a math teacher there for 8 years. Now I stay at home with my DS5...I also have a daughter at Huntley HS!

We are so close!!! We are in Huntley! LOL I can't wait to get to SWW with my DS!!! He's gonna love it! We were just there 2 weeks ago and Star Tours was a FAVORITE ride of his!!! We rode it like 5 times in a day! It still wasn't enough for him! LOL

When's your next trip to WDW???

Lots of events as other posted already.....and yes it is DHS only.

The crowds for the Star Wars Weekend events are "Excessive"..... add this to the fact that this is summer in Florida which is like living on the surface of the sun, only a bit wetter and you will have some challenges..... but if you can stand the crowds and the heat the event is well worth the trip!

We were at SWW last year for the insanity! I say insanity because ST2 opened the first day and George Lucas was there. We did get to see him which was cool. DH is a HUGE SW fan, so I had to suck it up for a couple of days. It was cool to see alot of characters and DH got pics with all of his faves, except Donald as a Stormtrooper (won't even get into that one). If you're a SW fan, it's well worth it. The more popular charcters have much longer lines (Chewbacca in particular) but if you plan, you should be able to fit it all in. Hyperspace Hoopla (the nighttime show) is absolutely FABULOUS!! (DH didn't think it was as funny as I did) The motorcade parade is also pretty cool to see. We did 2 days and now DH is begging to do SWW again next year, so we'll see, if he's a good boy...:rolleyes1

sorry this is long. I tend to rant when I think of SWW........My DS turned 5 when we went to SWW 2 years ago. He, DD9 and DH are HUGE SW fans. Like can quote most of the movies and I have to practically peal his Jedi costume from Halloween off him to get to wash it. There isn't a day that goes by that he doesn't wear his Jedi Robe and carry his lightsaber (that's DS not DH :goodvibes ), has SW toys, his fav video games are SW, etc. If we would let him change his name I'm sure it would be Luke. Sure of it.

Soooooo we went to SWW in 2010, hit 2 weekends 2 days on each. Crowded doesn't even start to explain it, it was horrible, I've been on full fledged holiday '10' days to the parks and it just didn't compare.DHS is small and compact with streets that seem buiser than they are most of the time anyway and SWW made it worse. DHS was packed, the advice of the other attractions will be slow b/c SW people will be doing SW stuff is a bunch of bologna too. Everywhere was packed. The 100 degree heat I have a feeling was driving even the die hard SW fans inside to attractions for breaks.

The charecter lines varied from 20 min to an hour, even early in the morning the popular ones were swamped, alot of them were out in the sun too. DS talked for months about meeting Vader we went there first (at RD getting TSM FP on the way) and 45 min later at our turn he chickened out, Vader was quiet intimidating to him in real life and it's no wonder he was practically 3 x's his size. Ok no prob DH and DD got thier pics I kept him in the stroller and just went on by he eyed him cautiously but wouldn't get near him. We hit the Fab 4 SW lines a few times and kept getting Vader Goofy, couldn't time it to get another one. Sometimes the CMs' would let us let people in front of us while we waited on another charecter and sometimes they wouldn't that's how we met Goofy so many times.

We got spots for the parade about 45 min ahead of time but by the time the parade was approaching many people crammed in even trying to be in front of my kids front row sitting on the ground. I politely moved them out of the way and prevented them from stepping on my kids. One did drop thier popsicle on DD's shoe but that could happen anytime and heck if someone else didn't she would have probably ruined those shoes by the end of the day anyway.

In the roaming charecter lines adults (using the term losely) would just jump in front of kids patiently waiting a foot from the charecter for thier turn. It's awfully hard to explain to a 5 yr old w/ tears in his eyes why adults are so mean and not waiting thier turn.

Then there was Hoopla an appropriately named event. It was nutso. The first night we arrived 45 min ahead of time got a spot 2/3 of the way back from JTA stage and although the kids could only see a bit of the stage we were happy. In the next 15 minutes more 'adults' that were partaking in the adult beverages ;) crowded in, cussing, yelling, tramping my kids. One knocked DD down and a few min later when one literally fell over DS in his stroller (ubrella so as small as you can get) b/c they were play shoving each other we had to leave. Vader himself could not have held me back if we didn't. Day 2 we went an hour ahead of time were closer to the stage but as time approached a ton of fans materialized out of thin air to join thier friends closer up so we got jostled back further and couldn't see again. We left. We didn't try again. Now that nightmare is seemed to have been fixed in 2011 by moving the show from the JTA stage but I won't be convinced till we go ourselves. And then there was the profanity...... I know that can happen anytime but having alot of adults in a small space when its hot, drinking and hanging out they seem to let the potty words fly a little more frequently and loudly.

that being said see my ticker. DH convinced me again to go during SWW. DS will be almost 7 (a week shy) so we will see how it goes. No stroller this time which terrorfies me when I think of that crowd I can just see him getting knocked down and trampled but we are going to give it a go and see what happens. May the force be with me. :darth:

Just to let you know, they moved the Hoopla to the stage at the Sorcerer's Hat last year and I think that really helped with the crowd...much more space to see the show.

Blah. Call me when it's Star Trek weekends. :thumbsup2

Funny note... Apparently it seems to run at the same time as "Gay Days" some years. I knew somebody who went and knew nothing about Gay Days or that it was running at the same time that year. The first thing that they said when they got home is that they had no idea that Star Wars had such a huge same-sex couple following because they were just EVERYWHERE. He attributed it to a Rocky Horror Picture Show-like cult phenom that he had no idea about that must have also included Star Wars.

I about friggen died. :lmao:

We went in 2004, (wow, can't believe it's been that long ) but anyway, we had a GREAT time...it was definitely crowded, but manageable. My oldest DS had just turned 6yo and my DD was 7.5yo and they both loved it. The characters are absolutely amazing!! Would love to take youngest DS, he's 6.5yo this year...but not going to happen, thanks to oldest DS, baseball overtakes our spring. :)

:rotfl2::rotfl2: Hilarious!!!

We were there last year by accident and it was pretty crowded, but still very cool. We got to meet R2D2 and C3PO and take pictures with them. :cool1:

Do you have any tips on how to plan for this? I'm attending my first SWW (yay! I missed it by a week last year), and I'm attending mostly to meet the characters. I'm hoping to see as many as possible. :)

We want to meet lots of characters, too! I am n ot really interested in the "stars" real actors...just the fake ones! :rotfl:

We want to meet all the Mickey characters in SW costume...how many different lines are there...we also want to meet the Jedis, C3PO, R2MK, and the bad guys!! Can't wait, our first one too!!!!:lovestruc

PIRATEGIRL007...so much good info, thanks!! We are going the last weekend of SWW this year and can't wait! I know the crowds are gonna suck, but I am sure siked about DS6 meeting all the Star Wars peeps!!

We are bringing our stroller, last trip to do that, but it's gonna be hot...any tips for the character m&g lines? How to stay cool?? Times or a layout of the best way to get to all of them in a 2 day span??

Once the first weekend nears maps will leak out for the charecter locations and all the event info. Also some of the charecter sites will have thier info updated as soon as the first weekend is over. The big ones to hit w/ the longest lines you gotta do first thing in the morning: Chewy, Darth Vader, and R2D2 (and I'm probably forgetting someone) hit those first shortly after RD. Get a FP (TSM would be easiest) on your way and then hop in line, I think last year they came out about 30 min after opening. Bobba Fett and his other bounty hunters also draw decent crowds and should be gotten pretty early if you can as do the classic Disney charecters. Alot of the lines swap out 1-3 people so you could stand in line and get someone you already met. I'd start immediately talking up your line mates as soon as you get in line and see who they are after, if the charecter gets swapped out when you near the front that you want start letting line mates past you to pass the time till your guy comes back.

Some of the charecters will be 'walk up' most of the day like the Clone Wars people still aren't pulling in the crowds yet. The roaming charecters will be easy to get too if you don't get bogged down by fanboys. I'd save them for the busier hotter part of the day too.
