How can it be "officially delayed" if it's a rumor coming from an Internet magazine?

I was looking forward to it if for no other reason than the possibility of longer hours at AK.

Hopefully the budget will remain and something else will take its place as the central idea in an expansion of DAK.

I hope this is true and that they instead decide to do an UP! themed expansion (there is an actual bird that looks like a small version of Kevin by the way).

Would be cool to have this kind of bird there as well.

Oh I hope this rumor is true. I don't care how much money Avatar made, the movie sucked big time. I hope WDI can come up with something great on a Disney brand like the did here at DCA with Carsland.

What is needed is the originally planned Beastly Kingdom!

The Wooden Dinosaur coaster that was cut wouldn't be a bad addition either :thumbsup2

The problem with Beastly Kingdom is it doesn't have that magic "S": Synergy

It seems clear that Disney was hoping Avatar would bring in "new business"...customers who aren't part of the traditional WDW audience but would take notice of Avatar and/or James Cameron.

That's what Universal got from Harry Potter. The Mummy, The Simpsons, Men in Black, Dr Seuss, Shrek, Spider-Man and many more properties were not enough to get certain people into their parks, but WWoHP was the proverbial tipping point. Millions of new customers responded by opening their wallets.

Beastly Kingdom may have turned out to be a fantastic addition but without any sort of name recognition, it's probably not enough to draw in millions of first-time guests who wouldn't otherwise visit WDW. That's the end result of the economically competitive / social media / smartphone / short attention span society we live in today. Sometimes just being "good" (excellent, superior) isn't good enough.

Personally I've never even watched Avatar. But I was in favor of that project because (IMO) the potential upside warrants a significant investment on Disney's part and Cameron's involvement would all but guarantee high quality. If it's good entertainment, the theme becomes secondary. Even non-fans could still enjoy the experience. Don't think I have ever seen "Song of the South" or "Ichabod and Mr Toad" but Splash Mountain and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride are still worthwhile.

Now if the rumors are to be believed, Disney may be hoping a carbon copy Cars Land provides the synergy and attendance bump they are seeking. Yay....more ride clones. :headache: :crazy2:

The mistake that a lot of us DISers make is we tend to look at things from our own Disney obsessed point of view. (Myself included there)

If the average person is searching the internet (or watching TV or whatever) and sees "Disney announced Beastly Kingdom (or Australia) expansion for Animal Kingdom", is will most likely not grab their attention. (Meanwhile, the Disboards goes nuts)

But if they see "Disney announces Avatarland (or Star Wars land) they are going to take notice.

    Hold on, everybody.

If you trace the threads back through the entire rats nest, from the article quoted above, to the original IGN article, to the original source (an Indiewire Playlist article)...you'll see something very interesting.

Their entire reason for saying the AK Avatar project is delayed is....they expected to see concept art by now. That's it. Their whole reasoning. Not that they've talked to anyone at Disney or WDI or in the Cameron camp. That they haven't seen concept art.

Now, maybe it's true...maybe the project has been put on the back burner/delayed. But I'm not sure the reasoning behind THIS stream of articles is all that solid.

    Good find.

Honestly, without even bothering to look, I figured the IGN article was "sourced" by the same Disney blogs and rumor sites we all read.

Saw that same thing and was getting ready to post about it.

Also, i wonder if people still saying they want Beastly Kingdom realize that some of the Beast kingdom ideas ended up getting incorporaed into the IOA's Lost Continent area.... which is now a shell of it's former self due to Harry Potter taking over the land (and attractions) once housed in the area.

I recall Listening to a podcast where the lack of concept art was discussed a few weeks back. I don't remember if it was WDW Today or the Unofficial Guide with Jim Hill, but I know Len Testa was on the show. Maybe the original source heard this and ran with it.

YES! Can we start a picket outside of AK? It'd be pro-WDW, so they wouldn't break us up, right?

Avatar had a lot of box office dollars, but is nowhere near the obsession HP is. People play quidditch, for crying out loud.

In addition to a lack of concept art I've heard there are 'creative differences' between imagineering and Cameron.
