Skyfall - The James Bond franchise has been saved

I'm a huge fan of the James Bond film franchise. We own all of the films all the way back to Sean Connery's days, and they are our fallback movies whenever we can't think of anything else to watch. I've just always loved them.

But I did not like the first two Daniel Craig movies at all. Too dark, too action-hero, too American?, etc. Here is Roger Ebert's review of Quantum of Solace, and I totally agreed:

But I must say that after seeing Skyfall this weekend, my faith is renewed. It was quite good. I hope they continue in this direction with future films. I even loved the song, and just bought it on iTunes.

Here's Roger Ebert's review, and while this won't be one of my fall-back/anytime movies simply because I like old stuff better, I agree with him:

I liked it as well. I think Ms speech is a great telling of what the Bond franchise needs to be from this movie forward.

I love the Craig series, so to me, this one was only icing on the cake, it was a GREAT, GREAT movie, IMO.

I LOVE Daniel Craig as James Bond. I loved his first Bond, didn't really like the second one... TOTALLY LOVE this Bond! :lovestruc

I didn't see the first two Daniel Craig Bond movies (they're both on my TiVo, but haven't gotten around to them yet), but I LOVED Skyfall. The 2nd movie, Quantum of Solace, was written during the writer's strike, and they said that they were basically flying without a net -- writing it as they went along -- so this new movie is a "reset" back to the end of Casino Royale. Maybe those will be on this weekend's schedule.

Please, no one say what the three big spoilers are for Skyfall, but I have to admit I got a little choked up during the movie. Normally, James Bond movies don't have a lot to spoil and are just great good guy vs. bad guy movies where you know who is going to win in the end. But this one does have some definite surprises. Kind of like how "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" had something that could be considered a big spoiler within the realm of James Bond films.

And the theme song becomes more meaningful after having seen the film. This theme song may become one of my favorite James Bond songs, and it's been years since I've really liked one of them - maybe Goldeneye was the last memorable one to me. This new song is an instant classic.
