Served with Flair, My Culinary Cabaret (Solo May 2016 DR), updated 11/12, Earl of Sandwich

Love your dress. You and Daisy are totally twinning. We just need to get your some flower mickey ears for your next trip ; ) Food aside, it looks like you really enjoyed the characters. Love all of their clothes, though Mickey does look a little Miami Vice :-)

This post will focus on the food. the one immediately after will focus on the character interactions.
Because PRIORITIES!

This entire plate looks absolutely delicious!

I still gotta try this! I'm a strawberry fan, too! In fact, the only fruit dessert I like more is...

...apples!!! I'm a huge sucker for a good apple dessert! And that apple cobbler looks PERFECT!!!!!

Cassoulet au Confit de Canard – Pulled Duck Confit with braised Flageolet Beans
I wish I were eating this right now!

Jamaican-braised Beef with Pigeon Pea Rice and Micro Cilantro
Oh man, this too! SUCH TASTY-LOOKING SELECTIONS!

non alcoholic b/c heat and alcohol are not a good combo for me
Girl, me neither.

Mmmmmm, that frushi, though!

For the pizza I went with Kari’s pick of Carciofi Pizza (white pizza, artichoke, fontina, mozzarella, truffle oil).

Take a look at this beauty:

O M G !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man. That looks/sounds awesome. I normally avoid pizza while on vacation, but at some point, I might have to make an exception to that rule for this!

img_5137-600x800-jpg.176820

Wasn’t sure what to expect. Took a sip and was in heaven! Tasted just like liquified butterscotch candy! Mmmmmmmmmm!
YAAASSSS! Girl, I love me some Butterbeer! (I prefer the non-frozen kind, though.)

butterbeer-ice-cream-harry-potter-diagon-alley-1-800x513-jpg.176822

I’m sorry to say that I was very disappointed. I was expecting a stronger butter candy flavor like the drink had, but to me it tasted mostly vanilla. Although the picture I found has a lot more of the brown swirl than mine did, so that might have had something to do with it. Should have gone with another frozen butterbeer instead. Or chosen another flavor ice cream as there were some interesting flavor choices.
Should have done what I did... Dumped it in a cup of non-frozen butterbeer and turned it into a float!

One of the reasons I booked 50s PT was because I had read about the servers’ shenanigans and it sounded like fun. Later on I also read that not all servers were equally entertaining, and as it turned out my server wasn’t so engaging. I don’t know if he was having an off day or if that’s just how he always is. There was the occasional comment about elbows on the table, but other than that not much else.
I had the SAME experience the one and only time I went! I was super disappointed!

Don't you just LOVE Daisy's bow?!
Yes! Yes, I do! Ya'll are so cute together!

That passion fruit cheesecake looks so good to me right now!

You're making me reconsider my SciFi reservation for 50s! That pot roast looks so good!

That pot roast was the ultimate comfort food!

You look very snazzy though

Why thank you!

Love your dress. You and Daisy are totally twinning.

Omigod, I know, right?????!!!!!!!!!!

We just need to get your some flower mickey ears for your next trip ; )

I actually saw two women sporting flower and twig Mickey ears on my second Epcot day. Should've written down where they got them from. Can't for the life of me remember

Man. That looks/sounds awesome. I normally avoid pizza while on vacation, but at some point, I might have to make an exception to that rule for this!

YES YOU DO!

YAAASSSS! Girl, I love me some Butterbeer! (I prefer the non-frozen kind, though.)

You might feel differently in the summer heat though

Should have done what I did... Dumped it in a cup of non-frozen butterbeer and turned it into a float!

Sounds PERFECTION! Why didn't I think of that. Next time...

I had the SAME experience the one and only time I went! I was super disappointed!

Hope that wasn't what kept you from going again. The food was totally worth it and I would return just for that.

Yak and Yeti

Today we move on from Hollywood Studios to Animal Kingdom. I admit than when I first started looking at dining options Yak&Yeti wasn’t even on my radar. That is until I read Kari’s (@kastoney ) very glowing report of their wonton dessert. There was some serious gushing there! And that is not something I take lightly especially when it comes to dessert. My fate was sealed. I NEEDED those wontons.

I scheduled a lunch for 12:30. Stepping into that restaurant I was happily greeted with a blast of cold air. The AC was on full blast which was very much appreciated. Learning my lesson from the day before I decided to go light for this meal. I had BOMA scheduled for dinner and there was no way I’d be too stuffed to enjoy my meal there!

For my entrée I chose the Teriyaki Mahi Mahi - Grilled mahi mahi, sweet teriyaki sauce, pineapple-mango chutney, jasmine rice, sauteed baby bok choy, shiitake mushroom, red peppers:

IMG_5549 (800x600).jpg

This was a great and delicious choice. There was a light freshness to it that I really enjoyed. The fish was wonderfully grilled and the sauce was slightly sweet not overpowering. The portion size was just right. As a whole this dish was satisfying without leaving me stuffed.

For my drink the Shanghai Lemonade caught my eye (Lemonade with Desert Pear, Passion Fruit or Lemon Grass Flavors). I chose the Desert Pear flavor. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived:

IMG_5548 (600x800).jpg

Isn’t that color just GORGEOUS?????????????

And it was delicious as well. Perfect accompaniment for my meal.

And now what you’ve all been waiting for: DESSERT TIME!!!!!!!!!! I had been dreaming and anticipating this moment for a long time.

I present to you Fried Wontons - Skewers of fresh pineapple and cream cheese wontons, vanilla ice cream, honey-vanilla drizzle:

IMG_5550 (800x600).jpg

These were absolutely HEAVENLY!!!!!!!!!!!!! My taste buds were rejoicing as they savored this delectable dessert. My only complaint? There needs to be 3 more skewers at the very least! Thank you Kari!

Last but not least, you will remember that I was sitting in a freezer. By the time I ordered dessert I needed me some hot tea. Wanna know something funny? When I first sat down and perused the menu I asked myself who on earth would want tea or any hot beverage for that matter considering the hot and brutal sun outside (although it was much better than the day before). I actually looked at that section in horror. Silly me. Now I understood.

Ordered myself a pot of Spiced Chai:

IMG_5551 (800x600).jpg

Such a pretty little tea pot, don’t you think?

I rather liked the atmosphere of the place itself and was quite satisfied with the service. Sadly, no photos of the restaurant itself.

And with that it was time to head back out and make the most of the time I had left in the Animal Kingdom.

I agree that is quiet cold in Yak & Yeti. I normally bring a shawl or cardigan when we know we are eating there. Your mahi mahi looks amazing!! Also I am a huge fan of that the won tons. I would like to go there one time and just order those, as they are truly heaven on a plate :)

The first time we ate at Yak & Yeti was shortly after riding Kali River Rapids, and I thought I was going to freeze to death!!!

LOVE those wontons. LOVE!

Me gush???? You sure that was me? Seems so out of character :-)

Wow, that is gorgeous!!!!! If they can add some rum I may need to get one of those :P

:worship::worship::worship: So glad they lived up to the hype for you!!!! We missed Y&Y last trip so looking forward to eating there in just 2 short weeks :-)

One of our close-by burger chain locations has this too! (They call it Poppin' Purple Lemonade). I absolutely love it, so much so that I've tried to find the syrup in stores. At the restaurant, they offer free refills on them and they may or not just end up bringing me a pitcher of it to save time. :)

Monin makes a desert pear syrup. https://www.monin.com/m/desert-pear-syrup.html
They even have a spiked lemonade recipe on their site. https://www.monin.com/m/desert-pear-lemonade.html

Your meal at 50's Prime Time looked delicious! I haven't been back for about 2 years so I think we'll have to make a trip soon. I was curious about that Minnie's Springtime Dine. I thought Hollywood and Vine was pretty decent when we went there last year, but it was a little hectic in pace. It sounds like you had great character meets! Yak and Yeti looked good!! I keep meaning to order that dessert but we never seem to have room for dessert. But it sounds like I'll have to make a visit there just to try them!

What a great review. I never thought of 1900 Park Fare for dinner. Told DH about the characters and I think it will be on the list for our May trip.

Sorry to be so behind. I'll do some replies now and a new update on wednesday.

I agree that is quiet cold in Yak & Yeti. I normally bring a shawl or cardigan when we know we are eating there.

Smart. Wish I had known to do that

The first time we ate at Yak & Yeti was shortly after riding Kali River Rapids, and I thought I was going to freeze to death!!!

Lucky for me then that my Kali FP was after my meal. Can't imagine how much worse it would be if I was wet from the ride

Yum - always great when the portion size is what you needed at the time!

I agree. It was just right.

And love that you ordered some tea - that's something I would do too!

I love tea. Can't stand coffee

Yak n Yeti is one of my fav restaurants. I can't say enough about their mango pie as well!

I do love me some mangoes. But I don't know that I would be willing to give up on those won tons. I suppose the best solution would be to schedule a dessert meal :D

Me gush???? You sure that was me? Seems so out of character :-)

Oh yes, I'm very sure! :flower1: Too lazy to copy and paste, but I fully approve of gushing when it comes to food (and Disney of course)

Wow, that is gorgeous!!!!! If they can add some rum I may need to get one of those :P

You mean to tell me you don't carry a small flask with you at all times? :P

So glad they lived up to the hype for you!!!!

Those won tons sure did! Thank you again

They call it Poppin' Purple Lemonade

Ooooh, LOVE that name!

At the restaurant, they offer free refills on them and they may or not just end up bringing me a pitcher of it to save time. :)

Well if it's free.....

Good to know, thanks!

One of my best meals there!

Ah, you see, I ate there for the sole purpose of having the dessert. The entree was just there to provide more sustenance.

I never thought of 1900 Park Fare for dinner. Told DH about the characters and I think it will be on the list for our May trip.

1900 was delicious and fun! I would totally recommend it.

Don't know how I missed this update! Your picture of the fried wontons is bringing back good memories :goodvibes We ate there a couple years ago and last week as we walked by, DH commented that he wants to eat there again in Nov. Lucky for him it's in the plan lol! But those wontons are amazing :cloud9:

Don't know how I missed this update!

No worries. I've been really bad about updating

Yes they are! Glad you get to go back in Nov

IMG_5709 (800x600).jpg

Did I say there would be an update on Wednesday? I meant Thursday. Those darn night shifts mess up my days of the week sometimes.

After a wonderful day at Animal Kingdom I hopped on a bus to Animal Kingdom Lodge for dinner at Boma. This was one of the meals I was especially excited for. It was on my radar as soon as I found out about the variety of salads and the butternut squash soup served here. Plus I had read nothing but excellent reviews. So did it live up to the hype? Read on and find out.

I had a good 40 min or so before my scheduled meal so that gave me some time to explore the resort and the animals out back. At one point the giraffes were very close to the balconies of the resort rooms. How lovely to have that view!

Ok on to dinner because after all that’s what you’re all here for. But first some photos of the restaurant itself:

IMG_5708 (800x600).jpg

IMG_5707 (800x600).jpg

I was escorted to a table towards the back by the windows. It was just a view of the pool area but I appreciated the relative seclusion from the busy middle of the restaurant.

Time to fill up those plates. First order of business, Butternut Squash Soup:
IMG_5710 (800x600).jpg

BEST Butternut Squash Soup EVER! Everything about it was utter heavenly PERFECTION from the creamy texture to the spices. If I close my eyes I can still taste it. Oh, and that wonderfully sweet aroma. My only complaint is that the soup bowls need to be deeper. I contemplated getting a second bowl but there was a lot more food to sample.

On to salads. There was an excellent variety and I chose 3 that appealed to me the most:

IMG_5711 (800x600).jpg

And because I knew I wouldn’t remember what was in each of the salads just from the picture I actually took a photo of the descriptions on top of the salad bar:
IMG_5718 (800x600).jpg

Being from Middle Eastern descent, these types of salads especially appeal to me. Very typical of what you’d find in a lot of grilled meat restaurants here (well except for the cheese in the eggplant salad of course). And not unlike some of the salads served with Sabbath meals when I was growing up.

They delighted my taste buds as well especially the eggplant one. I have a soft spot for anything eggplant and if it’s on a menu chances are I’ll choose it.

To go along with my salad plate:

IMG_5712 (800x600).jpg

From top clockwise: Broccolini with spiced Tunisian paprika olive oil, chicken, plantain chips, mashed potato/sweet potato, some spread/sauce that I don't remember, beef, and some Bobotie (South African dish with ground beef, lamb, mushrooms, and eggs).

The only item I didn’t care for were the plantain chips which I found a little lacking in flavor. Everything else was delicious.

Of course no meal is complete without dessert:

IMG_5713 (800x600).jpg

From top clockwise: chocolate muffin, cheesecake (I think orange flavor), guava panna cotta, apple cobbler with warm vanilla sauce, and a zebra dome (which flipped when I put it on my plate hence the sloppy look).

As much as I love chocolate I have to say unfortunately that I didn't much care for the chocolate muffin. All the rest were fabulous. I was concerned about the zebra dome as I had read that it has coffee flavor and I hate coffee but it was fine. My absolute favorite however, so much so that I went back for seconds, was the guava panna cotta. That made my taste buds dance.

And one more photo of the chair opposite me:

IMG_5715 (800x600).jpg

LOVE that Mickey touch!

I'd say that it definitely lived up to the hype. I'd love to eat there again but I also do want to try Sanaa for their bread service as well as other dishes and I don't get to go to Disney very often. As my favorite villain says: "Life's full of tough choices, inin't?!"

Stay tuned for next time when I have an actual sit down breakfast for the first time this trip!
(which I am hoping to have up sometime next week, going to try not to let too much time pass again between updates).
