Second gator

FYI for people who have not read this article or related information-this is not a new statement made by the father. This was information he shared while in the process of being treated for his injuries. It is coming out now because the public records are being released. People in another thread seem to have missed that point.

No kidding. The comments on line in other places make me sick. Treating this as some sort of "embellishment" by the father, and saying things like "he wasn't injured at all" and suggesting that perhaps the parents drowned the kid and then made this all up. Really? People can be SUCH idiots. It was reported ORIGINALLY (and in all these stories) that the father had bite marks and needed stitches. But, yeah, sure, he probably stabbed himself in the arm or something to cover up the drowning. SMH at the stupidity (and/or cruelty) of some other humans who wander this earth.

The press can be a wonderful tool for legal posturing.

It's not legal posturing, at least to my eye. This was reported by the paper after further tapes between the EMS people and first responders were released. Just seems like the sort of thing that happens in the normal course of things....much as we are now reading transcripts from the Orlando night club shooting. Shrug.

wow, I know a lot of people know this is normal but I had no ideal, im not going to Disney World again unless I have Crocodile Dundee with me

It's pretty much a guarantee that every fresh body of water in Florida has gaters. Where there is one there will be several. Dawn and dusk are the most dangerous times to be in or near water.

But many many people outside of Florida do not know this.

That's true. I don't live in Florida. I know there are alligators there, but I had no idea they were at WDW's lake. It never occurred to me and is not obvious to all tourists. I've been to many lakes around the country and never encountered an alligator, so it's not something I would automatically think of while at WDW. I am glad they put up the signs. Tourists need to be warned so they can be vigilant.

And that's the part that I find surprising. Because I'm not from Florida and I know this because everything I've ever seen in TV or read about Florida mentions alligators. I know they can climb chain link fences.

I'm not from Arizona or New Mexico but I know the desert has scorpions and rattlers. I'm not from Maine but I know there are bears and moose there.

It doesn't shock me that people thrashing around in the water attracted more than one alligator.

It's s terrible tragic accident for this family. My heart goes out to them.

People not living in Florida, or any area where there are gators, may still be aware of the dangers of alligators. However, it may not be on your "high alert" mind when visiting a place like WDW, or another tourist spot. Certainly not faulting WDW but it's easy to get caught up in the magic of Disney, on vacation, having a wonderful time. One feels safe and somewhat in a Disney bubble. It's a place where you may tend to forget the "real world". Not going to get into signage as that's been covered ad nauseum and am sure this family feels horrible. However, to put blanket statements that everyone should know about the gators and to say they are ignorant, or any of the other things that have been said is out of line, IMO.

Well, surprise! I know there are alligators in Florida, had no idea that there were alligators in every body of water. I know there are bears in my state, but know there won't be any in my town. You can pretty much be assured that if you are at Great Adventure, you won't run into any bears.
