Russian Jet Downed by Turkey?!

Well that is good news! So is the Russian foreign secretary stating that "Russia has no intention to go to war with Turkey"

This is what concerns me with all the calls for the US to start "invading" other countries in the name of hunting ISIS. As you can see other countries are not going to just sit back and wave.

It's really complicated. Russia claims that it's fighting ISIS, but many claims are that they are basically attacking any and all enemies of the Assad regime.

Here's a who's who of the foreign forces involved in the conflict:

He's saying that no warning was given and that he was over Syrian airspace.

The cynic in me says of course he's gonna say that...
I believed they showed that to be false. There was warning given, and, according to flight tracking data, the plane did appear to be in Turkey. But some are saying Turkey over-reacted. Two sides, I guess, and a history there.

its all a huge mess. Theres another report that says the plane never actually entered Turkish airspace at all(US officials)...

Oh interesting! They said this morning that NATO had confirmed the plane was in Turkey. I haven't seen the U.S. report yet!

I know it's terrible and all but everytime I scroll by this thread title I hear "As God is my witness, I thought Turkeys could fly."

This is an extremely complicated, extremely confusing situation and I don't think any of us have the full story -- I just don't think it is available to the media. And I agree it is worrisome.

Not to trivialize the mess that is going on, however, needed to say that turkey's do fly. They fly into our trees at night to sleep!

I know, me too. It's a bad situation, and terrible, but when I first saw this thread I thought an actual turkey had flown into one of the plane's engines. I guess maybe because it's Thanksgiving and I have turkey-on-the-brain or something...

Otherwise a short incursion into their airspace would hardly seem to be grounds for shooting that plane down.

Any incursion is grounds to be shot down. If you violate the buffer and ignore warnings, then you are provoking the other country. Best way to discourage that is to shoot the aircraft down.

It happens quite often and it's rare that a plane is shot down. A US military plane (evading Russian jets) entered Swedish airspace without permission. Sweden is non-aligned and theoretically could have shot down the US plane after warning it. The Russians have entered Finnish airspace and basically got an escort out.

There had to be something more than a relatively minor incursion into their airspace. We're hearing so much about this particular incident because it's so rare.
