Retired racing greyhound + free dining = speed eating!A dining report-done!

Hmm, the last time I ate at the Captain's Grille, it was known as Yacht Club Galley. I never really think of eating there, but I know I've had decent food there before. It's difficult to not return to the old favorites.

Nice review. :thumbsup2

Hey all! Just jumped in, great report! Our adopted needle nose Phoebe adores her fluffy, stuffy, squeaky princess toys she gets every year from WDW, and also does not understand why she gets left at home, since she raced in Daytona, she is always ready to take trip back South ; )

I really like your DR format. Especially the ADR time, time seated, and check time. Looking forward to hearing more particulary about Yak and Yeti. I hope you had a wonderful anniversary.

Thanks to all for the kind comments. We enjoy sharing, and hope our tales can help others plan, or relive the magic.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch:

What kind of tease would we be without a speed eating report. So, here we go:

Date: 10/3, return of my humans
Meal: Yes, please!
Time: I can't tell time, I'm a greyhound, silly.
Appetizer: They let me lick the spoon! Oh, Happy, Happy!
Entree: 1.5 cups of Purina Pro Plan, shredded chicken with rice. 1 heaping Tbsp peas/carrots. 1 Tbsp vanilla yogurt. 1 fish oil capsule (keeps my coat nice). 1 glucosamine/chondroitin tablet (I ran about 140 races).
Commentary: I don't care what it is, if you put it in my dish, I'll eat it, and quickly. I was a little off tonight, and took almost 90 seconds. When I bring my "A" game, I'm done in about a minute. Taste? I hardly chew, let alone taste. I'm an eating machine! I'd ask for more, but after that, I need me a nap!

Location: Boardwalk Bakery
ADR time: N.A.
Arrival time: 06:25
Seated time: 06:30 (when they unlocked the doors)
Host/hostess: No name, but she could’ve used some pixie dust, or at least some coffee.
Server:
Drinks: OJ and milk for me, coffee and OJ for DW
Appetizers:
Entrees: Bacon, egg, and cheese croissant for me, tomato, egg, and cheese one for DW
Dessert:
Commentary: It’s the earliest possible place to get food in the BC area. Nothing else was open until 0700. On Sunday, we had a 0720 pickup to Discovery Cove, and wanted to do am EMH on other days, so this became a good place to use our QSL credits. The eggs were dispensed with an ice cream scoop from a heating pan. On Sunday, they weren’t spread out at all, resulting in all sorts of hilarity as we attempted to bite down on the sandwich (jail break!). Fortunately, DW had the wisdom to acquire cutlery, and we enjoyed them in a less-traditional fashion (for sandwiches). But, it was filling, and most important: it was open!

Entrees: Breakfast: (Yes, another breakfast!) Selection of Danishes, OJ, muffins, and standard breakfast fare. Alas, for the carnivores, not a speck of meat in sight.
Lunch: Salmon (both), Caesar salad (both), mac and cheese (both), chocolate cake (me), Steamed carrots and zucchini (DW), carrot cake (DW).
Dessert:
Commentary: It had such promise…we’d scouted the lunch selections, listed on the wall, when we ate breakfast. It sure didn’t look like park food. Not a burger or hotdog in sight. There was no line to eat at the cafeteria-style food place. My salad had far too much Caesar dressing (and I usually LIKE a lot of dressing, though I’m learning moderation). Christine removed the 2 most dressing-laden lettuce leaves from her salad, after my scouting report. Both of us felt that the salmon was too dry. We should’ve gone back through, and tried another protein source. Chris felt that the vegetables were very good, and we both agreed that the mac and cheese was, also. I found the cake quite nice, and only the thought of a swimsuit-clad afternoon kept me from stuffing my face with another piece. She felt that the carrot cake was very good. It should be pointed out that DC is all-inclusive. This includes Anheuser Bush beer, and all of it you can guzzle. We chose lemonade and iced tea, instead. Had we partaken of some libations, perhaps we’d look back differently upon the salmon. In the end, a bit of a letdown, after early high hopes.

Wow, you're a reviewing machine!

I like the concise nature of these reviews.

I've skipped the 9/27 Beaches and Cream dinner, for now, as many have expressed interest in our tales of Yak and Yeti. And for those that love their food porn, yes, we have photos of our entrees from this meal. I'll look to make peace with Photobucket soon.

In the meantime, please, please pull up a chair and enjoy:

Location: Yak and Yeti Disney’s Animal Kingdom
ADR time: 9/28 1300
Arrival time: 12:37
Seated time: 12:47
Host/hostess: Crowded at the entrance, but the line moved quickly.
Server: Zach
DISCLAIMER: The Y&Y bill is very skimpy, with no details. We rely on our bills, as well as our notes, to refresh our memories. There is nothing on the bill about what we got, so this is all from our notes.
Drinks: Me: Sprite, I presume. DW: Iced Tea. Refills were provided, but it is our opinion that they should’ve appeared sooner. It was a hot park day, and we both drained our beverages quickly (for us). It appears that SOP is for a Manager to visit every table. It was then that we asked for more drinks. Mr. Manager made a big deal out of Zach bringing them out 5 minutes later, “Zach saw me with your drinks and said, I’ve got it, let me take them.”
Appetizers: None, as we used DDP credits, though both the seared Ahi tuna and pot stickers were calling my name, and LOUDLY! I suspect that, had we not had free DDP, we would’ve considered 2-3 appetizers to share as our meal. Its less expensive, and we’ve found it to be faster.
Entrees: Me: Tempura Shrimp - chili plum sauce, coconut-ginger rice, stir fried vegetables $19.99
DW: Shaoxing Steak and Shrimp - skirt steak, tempura-battered shrimp, jasmine rice, stir-fried vegetables, chili plum dipping sauce $24.99
Dessert: Both: Fried Wontons - Skewers of fresh pineapple and cream cheese wontons, vanilla ice cream, honey vanilla drizzle $7.99
Commentary: Y&Y is, at lunchtime, very noisy. They’ve got their Environmentality hats on, with environmentally friendly paper straws. They’re ok, but begin to get mushy after 30 minutes, or so. We both found our food to be excellent. What was lacking was the service and timing. Perhaps this was self-inflicted, as we were in full park commando mode. We ordered everything at the same time (including desert). Zach checked in twice with us to say our dinner was coming, and expressed surprise that it hadn’t yet arrived. Later, I’d finished my entrée before DW did. Thus, she responded to Zach that she needed a little more time to finish before desert. Bad move. A little time became, “where’s desert?”

Returning to the food: my shrimp dish was excellent, though I got my fingers quite greasy taking the skewers out of them. This required more napkins, which, it seemed, had to be made in an environmentally friendly way, as it took a while for Zach to return with them. The coconut-ginger rice had a mild sweetness to it, no strong ginger. Also, the chili-plum sauce wasn’t too spicy. The skirt steak of DW was to die for! Wrapped around the rice, it was as tender as filet mignon. I had a taste, then another, and then helped her to finish it. She’d requested medium-rare, which it came out as. The desert was good, but it had to be sitting out for a while, as the ice cream was (literally) half-melted.

In conclusion, it was very good to excellent food, brought down by a combination of slow service and/or bad timing (pace) of the meal. We’re not sure if it was the kitchen, Zach, or a combination of the 2. We had other meals this trip that took as long, but felt better paced. Sports rating system score: Baseball- moments of excitement (excellence), with long stretches of boredom.

Time Summary (Meal Edition):
Seated: 12:47
Got entrees: 1:20
Desert: 1:50
Done: 2:06

Nice touch with Max's food review. :thumbsup2

I know this is a food reveiw thread but I am wondering how you felt about your experience at discovery cove besides the food? Worth leaving our beloved Disney property for? I have always wanted to swim with dolphins but just can't seem to tear myself away from the Mouse when we are there.

Also...I think even though the food sounds great that I am glad we didn't book a TS meal at Yak & Yeti. I was considering it but decided since time is so short at AK anyway with only a 9-5 day that we will do counter service. I think we will try Y & Y CS though as I have heard the food is good.

Ooh, ooh, I'll answer this one (Christine here)
Melanie, Discovery Cove was awesome!! The food was the only thing that was slightly less than excellent!! Because they limit admission, it was not crowded. Many staff members=great service. Very nice, very clean bathrooms. We know how you feel about leaving WDW property and it was definitely worth it!! Interacting with a dolphin was a great experience!! Next time we'll do Trainer For A Day (ha ha...when we win the lottery). I better stop right here, since this is a dining thread. popcorn::

Was hoping to get this one up yesterday, but it was our 12th wedding anniversary. We celebrated by taking Max to a Hershey Bears hockey game. He just loves to chase the Zamboni!!! (just kidding) Actually, we were there volunteering with him at a greyhound meet and greet, to get others interested in adopting retired racers.

Location: Beaches and Cream
ADR time: ADR’s not taken
Arrival time: 9/27 around 5pm
Seated time: Same as arrival time
Host/hostess: Friendly, efficient.
Server: Dominica R.
Drinks: DW: Sprite with raspberry syrup 2.69 + 0.50
Me: Frozen Sunshine 4.99
Appetizers: Nope
Entrees: Me: Hot dog with fries 7.99
DW: Chicken noodle soup 6.49
Dessert: Believe it or not, none!
Commentary: B&C was on our to-do list for this trip, but we weren’t sure where to fit it in. With free dining, we felt using TS credits would be a waste, so we’d planned for a visit paid OOP (out of pocket). Opportunity knocked on our door on Sunday, 9/27, when we found ourselves (safely, thank heavens) back at the BC after our Discovery Cove day. We tried to get standby at Cape May, but were politely told of a 90-120 minute delay. So, off to B&C we went. Got there at a perfect time, right around 5pm. The hostess said there’d be a slight delay for a table, but when we indicated that the counter was quite fine, we were immediately led in.
DW knew that I’d be instantly drawn to the frozen sunshine, an orange sherbet based drink that I’ve had many a time before. In the mood for something different, she chose the sprite with syrup listed above. There are several syrup choices available to add to the soda of your choice. Ok, so all I had was hot dog and fries, how good could comfort food be? The bun was nicely toasted, with a side of perfectly cooked fries. Not too greasy, or limp, or burnt. DW’s soup featured Mickey-shaped noodles, which made her smile.
Why no desert? Because we were pleasantly full, and didn’t want to stuff ourselves, with all the meals planned ahead. Had we done it, the Milky Way sundae was destined to be shared, but we held off.
Sitting at the counter was thoroughly enjoyable. Its not FF’s counter (review to come), but Dominica and the cooks were very friendly, when we asked questions. It was neat to watch the machine butter and perfectly toast bun after bun. The cooks explained how it worked, and the challenges hot dog buns present that differ from burger buns. And see the ice cream concoctions being prepared. While the tables filled up as we ate, the counter continued to remain mostly unoccupied.
In conclusion, we, like many, really enjoy this place. Though small, if you get there at the right time, or are willing to sit at the counter, it is a quick, cheaper meal. Had we not had free dining, I’m certain we would’ve returned 1-2 more times this trip (We’ve both enjoyed their chili in the past). And that Milky Way sundae would’ve been mine.

ps- it is worth noting that in August, B&C was serving breakfast for a while. Imagine the joy in my heart when I was watching Yc/BC TV on Sunday, and saw the B&C hours. It said they were open from 0730-1030, which could only mean one thing: they brough back breakfast!!!:woohoo: I commented about this to Dominica, who relayed my observation to a manager to doublecheck. Alas, the TV was wrong: they're not currently serving breakfast. :confused3

Location: Yachtsman’s Steakhouse
ADR time: 9/28 at 5:40
Arrival time: 5:35
Seated time: 5:40-5:45
Host/hostess: Ok. We watched them cut meat in the walk in cooler while we waited.
Server: Tag team: Zach and Lizzie
Drinks: Me: Ginger Ale DW: something called an Ecotini
Appetizers: None, used 2 TS credits from DP
Entrees: Me: Yachtsman Filet Mignon - 8-ounce Filet with Mashed Potatoes and a Red Wine Sauce $39.00
DW: Herb-crusted Rack of Lamb - braised artichokes, sunchoke puree, and cabernet olive reduction $33.00
Dessert: Me: Crème Brulee with fresh berries and rolled chocolate $8.00
DW: Gelato 3 ways (not on the All Ears menus)
Commentary: Upon being seated, I noticed that we’d been presented with customized menus, which noted our names and 12th anniversary. This was but one of many special little things Disney did for us on our vacation.
Not normally martini-type folks, but DW felt the Ecotini was good. My ginger ale was of the finest mass-produced quality. Really: it wasn’t flat, and had flavor, something which is lacking from time to time in various ginger ales.
My 8-ounce filet was a full 8 ounces. Now, I didn’t use a scale, but around these parts, many are down to 5 ounces, and I could see a difference. It was requested to be med-rare, and it was maybe just a little on the rare side. Not enough to send back. The sauce also had peppercorns, but their flavor wasn’t even throughout. As a result, I wondered where they were for the first 6 ounces, and found them during the last 2. But, not overly strong, especially if you like them. DW’s rack of lamb consisted of 2 ribs, cooked medium rare, as requested. She thoroughly enjoyed them both. She also found my mashed potatoes to be quite good, as did I. I’m really not into mashing my potatoes, but these had some sort of flavor, which I couldn’t decipher, that did them proud. Perhaps it was butter, with just a hint of garlic.
Desert was actually 2 parts: 1 planned, 1 surprise. After dinner, Lizzie brought out a tray with “Happy Anniversary” on it in chocolate. It has 2 squares of passion fruit gel and 2 squares of dark chocolate. Almost a desert preview. Thoroughly stuffed from my filet, I enjoyed about half of the crème brulee. DW couldn’t finish hers, either. She felt that what she ate was very good.
Oh: bread was pull-apart onion bread, and traditional rolls. Butter was topped with rock salt (minimal), and in a dish of olive oil. We asked for more. I think you get the picture.
Worth it? I think so. There are probably better steaks out there, but mine was quite good. Better than the Omaha Steaks I’ve tried, by far. On par with the high-end stuff from Allen Brothers.

Time done: 7:10pm

There are photos, but I must get ready for work now.

thanks for taking the time to post your yachtsman review ... we have an ADR for next Tuesday and may even keep it this time!

Oh dear I may be in trouble with the bread basket at Yachtsman it sounds like heaven. :lmao:Can't wait for our first dinner there.

I've uploaded to Photobucket. Here's my first attempt. Its been a while since we've uploaded, but I think I edited right. Here goes:

And, I just had this thought of Oybolshoi's home, getting a delivery of beery goodness when I saw this little guy chugging around Epcot's World Showcase:

As a preview: we appear to have a lot of desert photos coming, for those who like their sweets!

And, a photo of the speed eater himself, on his "gotcha day":
