    Thanks TigerKat! And did you notice any difference in the size/taste/appearance of the margaritas from your previous visits there? Maybe it's just me, but the Blood Orange margarita tasted and looked very different than the one I had in Nov. 2010...not as good now as before. Luckily, I really enjoyed the avocado one though so I was content. Well, except for the fact that I didn't get to have any of those delicious tostadas. :mad:

    We were all devastated, too! :sad2: We talked to the manager about it- the bartenders said everyone should complain, and everyone HAS been complaining. Really, REALLY loved those crab tostadas!:sad1:

    Did the manager give you a reason? I figured that they did it to force people to dine at the restaurant (San Angel Inn) in order to get their tostada fix. In other words, to drum up more business for the restaurant since they probably have lost some customers with the opening of La Hacienda. Now I'm wondering if they were removed from the restaurant menu too???

    Thanks again to everyone for their patience. Hopefully I haven’t lost everyone due to the long delay in getting started with my reviews. But now finally without further ado….

    Let’s Get this Birthday Party Started! :cool1:


    Our direct Air Tran flight from the Central Illinois Regional Airport took a mere 2 hours and 20 minutes and we arrived at the Orlando Airport at around 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 12th. We made a beeline to the Magical Express pick-up area and were pleased to find a bus waiting there to take us to our resort, the Boardwalk Inn. This bus was shared by guests from the Port Orleans – Riverside, Boardwalk Inn & Villas, Yacht Club Resort, and Beach Club Resort & Villas. As this was the order of the bus stops, we only had one stop before we arrived at the BWI. I had checked in online in advance so check-in was a breeze. We picked up our keys and took the elevator up to the top floor (which at the BWI is only the 5th) to our assigned Room 5270. This turned out to be a good location for a standard view room. It was not far from the elevator and overlooked the pretty inner courtyard. The best part was that there was also a good view of the Illuminations fireworks from our balcony. Anyway, we did just a little unpacking and freshened up before heading out. We walked to the Guest Services booth right outside of the International Gateway Entrance to Epcot’s World Showcase so that I could get a new Tables in Wonderland card, as mine had expired at the end of April. Although we were on the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan for the first 5 days of our trip, I wanted the TIW card for the discount on alcoholic beverages (which we planned to have a lot of :thumbsup2) plus our meals for the last 2 days and OOP lunch at the Hollywood Brown Derby. Then we had a quick walk back to the Boardwalk (it’s amazing how much faster I move when I’m at WDW than when I’m at home ;)). Yes, we even beat the boat coming from Epcot that had left long before us!

    THE SHORT VERSION


    Highlights - Birthday menu and Complimentary Dessert, Crab Cake, Red Snapper, Banana Napoleon, Wine Flights

    Disappointments – Service, 2/3 of the Trio of Chocolate Desserts

    Would we Return? – Yes


    THE LONG VERSION

    We were given a pager and were still looking at the menu posted outside when it went off. We were starving as all we had eaten since breakfast was the small bag of pretzels that they give you on the plane, so we were quite happy to be called so quickly.

    We were seated in the very back of the room, with our table against the back wall that has the ferris wheel (see pic below).

    At first we thought our waiter, who had a heavy foreign accent (sorry I can’t remember what country he was from), was just very friendly. But by the time our entrees were served, he had gone from being very friendly to downright annoying. For the first part of our meal, he just kept popping by our table every few minutes to chat about random things that were totally unrelated to our meal. As the restaurant got busier, and therefore noisier, I found it impossible to understand him between the noise and his accent. So I just smiled a lot and nodded, having no idea if that was the appropriate response. :confused3 However, not long after our entrees arrived, the situation with our server took a turn for the worse. But I’ll save that for later, now it’s time to talk (and show) food…the reason you are all here. :thumbsup2

    We wanted to start off our first meal of the trip with a bang so each ordered a wine flight. I don’t recall seeing wine flights available on the wine menus from any of the other signature restaurants, so I believe they are unique to the Flying Fish. I prefer white wines so I ordered the Riesling Flight, which consisted of 2-oz. pours of three different wines, two German and Mohua from New Zealand. The first German wine was a Selbach-Oster Kabinett. It was the driest and although it was my least favorite of the three, it was quite drinkable and I enjoyed it. However, my favorite was the sweeter German wine, Gunderloch Diva. For $17 I thought this was a pretty good deal, especially since a glass of any of these wines (pours not much larger than these) would cost at least $12.

    DD prefers red wines so she ordered the Pinot Noir Flight for $18. This included an Oregon wine (Argyle), an Australian wine (Coldstream Hills), and Deloach from California. She too liked all three of her wines, but her favorite was the Deloach Barrel to Barrel.

    The bread here is a multi-grain. It was good and we each quickly devoured a slice as we were really hungry.

    Next came a complimentary amuse bouche, which we were given because we were guests of the Boardwalk Inn. This was a cucumber avocado soup. Although I normally prefer my soup warm, this was quite tasty and seemed appropriate on a very warm day.

    For my appetizer, I of course chose the Crispy Maine Coast Jonah Crab Cake, as it was my favorite part of our meal at Flying Fish last November. I again loved this…so very good! Even though I was starting to get full, I couldn’t resist eating every last bit of the crab cake and a little of the slaw too.

    For her appetizer, DD ordered the Fresh Mozzarella di Bufala (aka Tomato salad or Caprese). She fell in love with the Caprese on our trip to Italy two years ago, so she was thrilled to see it on the menu. This consisted of three kinds of tomatoes (Yellow Beefsteak, Ugly Ripe, and the small Santa Sweet grape tomatoes), peppercorns, and fresh mozzarella cheese and basil leaves with Sicilian Olio Verde (Extra-Virgin olive oil) and a Balsamic glaze. She really enjoyed this and declared it to be one of the best she has had outside of Italy.

    On our anniversary trip in Nov. 2010 we also had our first meal of the trip at Flying Fish Café. I wrongly guessed that DH would order the Signature New York Strip Steak, so I planned to order the other signature entrée, Potato-wrapped Red Snapper. Well, DH threw me for a loop and ordered whatever fish dish was the Chef’s Special Thunder Entrée at that time. So I made a spur of the moment decision and ordered the steak. This turned out to be a bad decision. Although the steak was fine, it was nothing special. :sad2: This time though I was determined to have the red snapper and I am so glad I did because I thought it was delicious…one of my favorite entrees of this trip.

    DD went with the scallops for her entrée. The scallops were well-prepared and the mascarpone and pecorino cheese-laced risotto with prosciutto di parma cracklins (tasted like bits of bacon) and peas that was served with them was really tasty.

    As if we didn’t have enough food, I decided that I was craving asparagus and ordered the grilled asparagus with foyot sauce. Unfortunately neither of us really liked it, as the grilled preparation gave it a burned flavor. Although the sauce was good, it wasn’t good enough to overcome the burnt taste of the asparagus. Not worth the $8.00 OOP price. Oh well, I guess you can’t win them all.

    For dessert, I had the Trio of Sinful Chocolate Indulgences. This consisted of small portions of three different chocolate desserts. The first of these, chocolate bread pudding, I didn’t enjoy at all. This really surprised me because I normally like bread pudding. For instance I love the ones they serve at Raglan Road and Ohana. Although I like chocolate covered raisins, the combination of the chocolate bread (cake) and raisins just didn’t work for me for some reason. The second dessert was a flourless Chocolate Torta with raspberries. This was okay, for me it was better than the bread pudding but nothing special. By the time our dessert was served it had gotten dark outside and the restaurant was pretty dark without the natural lighting. Another family was seated at the table right next to us by that time (very close), so I didn't want to use the flash on my camera for the rest of the pictures. Consequently the pictures of my desserts and cappuccino came out kind of dark. I'll post them anyway, but after much editing to lighten them up they are not very good. Sorry. :guilty:

    The third dessert of my trio, white chocolate-almond crème brulee, was by far my favorite of the three. This was fortunate because for my birthday they brought me a complimentary regular size portion of this dessert, complete with a lit candle.

    For her dessert, DD chose the restaurant’s Signature dessert, Caramelized Banana Napoleon. She loved the combination of the crisp phyllo pastry, caramel sauce, and banana mousse. This was definitely one of her favorite desserts of the trip, and set the bar quite high for her desserts for the remainder of our meals.

    That completes the food portion of this segment, so now I will pick up where I left off regarding our service issues...

    Soon after our entrees arrived our server went from being annoyingly chatty to being nearly non-existent. Long after we had finished our entrees, he finally reappeared with the dessert menus. Then it took quite awhile before he returned to take our orders. Then it took even longer after finishing our desserts before we saw him walking by and waved him over to ask for our bill. Consequently, as soon as he finally brought the bill I quickly glanced at it and handed him both my key and my TIW card. I explained that we were on the Deluxe Dining Plan, but the TIW card was for everything not covered by the plan. He smiled and nodded. He seemed to understand…I thought he understood…but no he didn’t understand. When he returned I saw from the receipts that he had applied the 20% TIW discount to the entire meal and charged it all to our room. By this time it was 8:30ish and my DD was getting nervous that she was going to miss seeing the 9:00 fireworks from our balcony so I told her that she could leave and I would stay to get it straightened it out. When I thought everything was finally all straight and was walking toward the door with my copies of the two receipts in hand, I suddenly realized that I had forgotten to add a tip for the Dining Plan portion of our meal (the 18% tip had automatically been applied to the rest of our bill). SHOOOOOOT!!!! So back to our table I go. But the good news is…I did make it back to our room shortly before the fireworks started. So I guess all’s well that ends well. But seriously…nearly three hours for a meal at Disney is just a bit too long, don’t you think? Well, unless you're dining at Victoria & Albert's that is. ;)

    Now for the numbers...

    Total cost of meal (not including tip, wine, and asparagus) - $136.09 (or $34.02 per Dining Plan credit)

    And so I can do a DDP vs. TIW Cost Comparison at the end...

    Total cost of meal (again not including tip and non-covered items) if we had used my Tables in Wonderland discount of 20% instead of the DDP - $108.87

    20% TIW Discount on Wine Flights and Asparagus - $8.60

    I completely agree with you on the Chocolate Trio desserts! The white chocolate almond creme brulee was outstanding. I didn't care much for the other two.

    The Flying Fish continues to remain one of my favorite signature restaurants at Disney. I can't wait to read more of your reviews!

    Glad you enjoyed the flying fish meal. I adore the crab cake and also the snapper is one of my favourites - but I may have to try the scallops. Also the wine flight looks really good may have to try that too!!

    We have sat in front of the ferris wheel both times we went and had good service each time. Sorry yours wasn't.

    Looking forward to more reviews. Glad you had a good time.

    Hi Linda! :wave2: I'm really enjoying your ongoing dining review. It seems that we like the same drinks...I also chose the avocado margarita (delicious) at La Cava, had the Rosa Regale (love it) at the wine bar in Italy, and the Torontopolitan (quite good) during our lunch at Le Cellier. :lmao:

    In regard to FF, we had very good service on our first visit here in Nov. last year but the food (with the exception of the crab cake) was just okay. I think we just made the wrong choices though. Then this time the food was great (except for most of my dessert), but the service was not. Hopefully you will have better luck and be 2 for 2 with great food and service on your visit. Enjoy!




    Thanks for joining in auntfrannie! Next time I would definitely just order the creme brulee and skip the rest of the chocolate trio. Of course, by the time I get back there (sadly no trips planned for awhile :sad2:), I'm sure they will have all different desserts on the menu. :laughing:




    Thanks Ela! I'll definitely be returning to FF for the crab cake and snapper. Hopefully, since they are both signature items, they will still be on the menu whenever I do finally get back there.

    I saw you at Flying Fish that night. I was wondering if that was you in the back with your DD when I saw you taking photos.:laughing:

    I'm so sorry to hear about your service.:confused3 I had requested Bob as I had had him 2 of my 3 visits in the past. Bob was so wonderful that we immediately went upstairs and made a reservation to go back on our final night. Funny though that you said the bouche was because you were staying at the BWI. We thought Bob was being nice to us but we too were staying at the BWI.

    So glad you had the snapper. I had the surf & surf special that night-monk fish with lobster. It was wonderful.

    Looking forward to reading more of your reviews.

    OMG!!! You saw us??? Yep, that was me in the left-hand corner in the back of the restaurant...the crazy lady taking pictures of her bread.:laughing: I had meant to look for you and your friends that night but got caught up in the excitement of our first meal of the trip and totally forgot. Two nights later (on Saturday, the 14th) we were returning to the hotel from Epcot after closing (so maybe around 9:30ish???) and as we entered the left-side entrance (just past the FF) there was a small group of ladies wearing bday tiaras. Was that by chance you and your friends? I hope so, because they looked like they were having a good time! :thumbsup2:


    I hope you too had a great 50th birthday celebration trip and that you and your friends were able to de-stress.

    It's amazing how a server can make all the difference in a dining experience. I wish Disney would take the time to train all their waitstaff accordingly. I think the international college program interns get lost in the shuffle. They mean well, but when you are paying over $100.00 for a meal, you expect a server who knows when to serve and when to back off. Otherwise I am enjoying your review. I tried FF for the 1st time in Feb and it is on my "to be repeated" list.

    BOARDWALK BAKERY GOODIES


    I was up bright and early the next morning so that I could get in and out of the Boardwalk Bakery before it got busy. I got our refillable mugs (included with the Deluxe Dining Plan) and asked for two coffees that were served in disposable cups, as that is how they do it here. This is different than the self-serve beverage stations that they have at most of the resort food courts, where you fill your own mug with coffee, soda, etc. I also used a snack credit for a blueberry muffin. My family has always liked the muffins here…both the blueberry and chocolate chip ones.

    That same morning at 8:30 – 8:45ish we walked by the Boardwalk Bakery on our way to Epcot. Here is how it looked…actually this is how it looks most mornings unless you get there early.

    So for the next three mornings I got our coffees from the Belle Vue Lounge, which is located inside of the Boardwalk hotel, near the lobby elevators on the Inn side. By night this is a bar (very low-key), but during the morning they serve coffee, cereal, fruit, bagels and some of the breakfast pastries from the Boardwalk Bakery. This is a much faster and more convenient way to get your coffee fix in the morning. Just like at the BW Bakery though, you still have to show your mugs and then they serve the coffee to you in a disposable cup. One morning I also used a snack credit to get a cheese danish. This was good, but not as good as the apple one DD gets later at the Norway Bakery at Epcot.

    Then one late afternoon during our walk back to the hotel, we noticed that the BW Bakery was not busy so went inside to drool over (I mean look at :laughing:) the wonderful baked goodies inside their glass case. I almost got a cheesecake brownie, but then I saw this…

    Peanut Butter Chocolate Cupcake


    I remembered reading about this recently on the Disney Food Blog website. Here is how it was described:

    Oh my heavens. This might go down in the books as my favorite cupcake on property. It might even bump that Butterfinger Cupcake out of the top spot. What makes it so good, you ask? The. Frosting. Tastes. Like. Cookie. Dough. No kidding. The peanut butter frosting has the taste and texture of peanut butter cookie dough. It is outstanding. And inside? They don’t mess around with chocolate frosting, no sir. More peanut butter frosting.


    After tasting this wonderful creation for myself, I would have to say this review was pretty accurate. So if you are like me and like chocolate and peanut butter together, then I highly recommend that you give it a try! :thumbsup2

    Not us in the tiaras. We had a great trip! My friends had never stayed at BWI and they really loved it.

    We never even went into the bakery but I think I'll have to try one of those PB cupcakes when I go back with my family in August.

    Yep, that cupcake was really good! I wish I would have been able to finish it. I worked on it for almost two days but then it was time to switch hotels so I had to admit defeat and throw away what was left. :sad1: DD doesn't really like cake much so she was very little help. :sad2:

    And to think that when I first got it I had the thought of doing my own cupcake throwdown (like what they did on the Disney Food Blog website). I had great plans to try one of the cupcakes from Starring Rolls Bakery at DHS and one from the Caramel Shop at Epcot...you get the idea. :rolleyes1: I guess in this case my ideas were bigger than my stomach! ;) Those other cupcakes will just have to wait for another trip when my teenage son (aka "the bottomless pit") is along to help out. 'Cause he could probably eat all of these cupcakes in one day and not gain a pound. Oh, and then ask me, "What's for dinner? I'm hungry. :rolleyes:

    Anyway, I'm putting the finishing touches on my Coral Reef review now so I should have it posted soon. :thumbsup2

    THE LONG VERSION

    We checked in about 10 minutes early and there were just one or two other parties ahead of us waiting for them to begin seating guests, as this restaurant opens at 11:30. I asked if we could be seated by the tank and was thrilled when my request was granted. I’ve eaten here at least 5 or 6 times before but have only sat next to the tank one other time and that was about 10 years ago. So it was quite a treat to have a front row seat to watch all the sea creatures in the tank.

    Our server here was friendly (but not annoyingly so ;)) and efficient. She first told us about the many options available as our included non-alcoholic beverage on the Dining Plan. Frozen drinks like virgin daiquiris, pina coladas, and pina colavas were included, in addition to the usual options. So DD ordered a virgin pina colada (listed as a coconut freeze on our receipt) and I had a virgin pina colava (listed as a pina colava smoothie). In case you have never tried a pina colava, it is a pina colada with raspberry puree added. I have never tried the alcoholic version of this drink (with Bacardi Razz Rum) and really wanted to on this trip, but sadly never got around to it. Anyway, both of these drinks were quite good and were a nice alternative to the limited choices offered at most of the other one credit restaurants.

    There had been some changes to the Coral Reef menu recently. For appetizers, the Sea & Land (Grilled Shrimp with cucumber salad and barbecued beef tenderloin skewer) was gone. Two new appetizers were on the menu that sounded interesting to us so we gave them a try. The first was Crispy-fried Shrimp with a Jícama Slaw and Spiced Rémoulade. {Note: In case you were wondering, the Crispy-fried Shrimp replaced the Sea & Land as part of the Appetizer for Two} IMHO, the shrimp wasn’t anything special. I would have to say I preferred the Sea & Land better, so for me this was not a change for the better.

    The second new appetizer was the Fish Tostadas with Napa Cabbage, Avocado-Cilantro Cream, and fresh Lime. I was kind of expecting these to be similar to the Crab Tostadas at San Angel Inn (and used to also be available at La Cava de Tequila…but that’s another story :sad1: ). Unfortunately, they were not nearly as tasty as they sounded from their description and paled in comparison the Crab Tostadas. :sad2:

    Fish Tostadas with Napa Cabbage, Avocado-Cilantro Cream, and fresh Lime



    On my last visit to Coral Reef (in Nov. 2010) I had the Mahi Mahi and really enjoyed it, so I again ordered the Grilled Mahi Mahi with Rock Shrimp served on a bed of Jasmine rice. This is covered with a coconut-lime sauce that I think is a good complement to the mild taste of the fish. This was again very good. :thumbsup2

    My DH had ordered and enjoyed the Lobster Ravioli on our last visit. Since DD loves lobster, I recommended this dish to her and she followed my recommendation. Unfortunately she did not enjoy it nearly as much as her father had. She thought it was just okay and wished she had instead gotten the Mahi Mahi after she tasted mine. Her main complaint though regarding the ravioli was that it was too heavy of a dish for lunch. So I think this may have been more a case of her ordering the wrong thing than that the ravioli was not good. I guess that for our family (DH really liked it, DD did not), the jury is still out in the case of the Lobster Ravioli. :confused3

    As for dessert, I was very disappointed to see that my favorite dessert here, the Butterscotch Crème Brulee, had been replaced by a different flavor…Passion Fruit Crème Brulee. This may have been equally as good as the butterscotch but I just wasn’t feeling the “passion” that day. So I decided to go with the restaurant’s signature dessert, The Chocolate Wave served with raspberry gelato. This was good but not nearly as good as another Disney restaurant’s chocolate lava cake, the Valrhona Chocolate Cake at California Grill.

    For her dessert, DD ordered the Baileys and Jack Daniel’s Mousse. I had seen many pictures of this dessert previously and they all looked like this:

    So I guess they are now serving this in a different glass. Also, the rolled chocolate has been replaced by a caramel crisp. I’m not sure if it tastes the same, as this was our first time having it. But sadly, like the rest of her food here, DD rated this as just okay.





    So in conclusion, the food on our recent two visits to Coral Reef (both in 2010) had been very good. But I would have to say that food-wise our meal here this time was just average, with the exception of my Mahi Mahi, which was still very good. However, we have always had above-average to excellent service and the atmosphere is very nice, although it can get quite noisy at times (as DH is always quick to point out). So we will probably return here again, but it just might not be on our next trip.



    I will end this review with two more pics that I took during our meal. Sorry they aren’t the best, but hopefully they will you give an idea of what it’s like to dine in the presence of sea creatures.
