Can someone point me to the thread regarding phone settings- to minimize data usage - icloud etc

I don't know the thread, but put the phone in "Airplane Mode", disable auto updates, disable cellular service and usage. You want to keep the wifi on so you can use the Disney Cruise App. This is what I remember from reading a couple threads on the subject.

As long as you don't sign up for a data plan on the cruise then all you have to do is put it on airplane mode then turn the wifi on and join.

I know there are some folks that have to get the internet service for work or family issues but I highly recommend "unplugging" for the cruise. Leave Facebook behind and focus on family and/or friends. I give work and family the number to dial my stateroom in case of an emergency and leave it at that. That's a major reason we love cruising. I know everyone can't but for those that don't "have" to be connected, try it..

Some good advice here and on other threads. But...the best advice I can give is to visit the internet desk the first day and ask the person there to help you make sure you have all the right things turned off.

You can avoid cellular charges (and associated data charges) easily by using airplane mode, but if you purchase internet service there are lots of pitfalls where your wifi plan can be used up (auto downloads, syncing, photo backup, etc). The people at the internet desk have always been very knowledgeable and pleased to help you make sure everything is off.

Does the wifi just operate the NAV app? Or does it work for other apps like iMessage? TIA.

iMessage only works if you purchase a data plan. The Disney Cruise Line App is the only thing that works without an internet package. The DCL app provides access to a digital version of the Navigator plus allows you to text chat between each other (you can also text from the 2 Wave phones provided in your stateroom).

They usually offer a small data package, I think 50MB's, for free if you sign up for it on your phone the first night (again via the DCL app).

If all you're going to use is the DCL app, just put your phone on airplane mode and then turn Wifi only on and join the onboard Wifi. As long as you don't "purchase" an Internet package, it won't do anything else other than allow you to use the DCL app.

I agree with the previous poster who mentioned the numerous pitfalls that can quickly use up all your data before you know it has happened. Here are the recommendations from the flyer available on the ship. Look closely at the 3rd question - it tells you exactly which things you need to turn off.

We just got off the Fantasy and the man working the internet help desk was great. I had my phone on airplane mode and never went on the internet but somehow used up all my free (50mb) of data the first night. I must have been signed in and didn't realize it. He helped me turn off all automatic updates, photo streaming, etc... Then on the last night turned everything back on for us.
