Passport near expiration issue

Hi - does anyone know if France requires your passport to be more than four months from expiration? I believe I read that UK does not have such requirements for US citizens.

Our children's passports are due to expire at the end of July 2012. We are going to UK and France in March 2012. If I don't have to renew them until summer, I'd prefer to wait, but I know there are some countries that want your passport to be still valid for at least 6 months when traveling.
(I don't know why that is, but it seems you don't get as much time with it as you expect)

Any help is much appreciated!
