When booking a stay at a single resort, splitting the duration of the stay into two separate reservations will allow Orbucks earned from the first booking of the stay to be applied toward the cost of the second reservation.
It works out best to book the majority of nights for the first booking, thereby providing the greatest immediate redemption value for the second reservation.
In example, a stay for seven consecutive nights at a resort is broken up into booking #1 for nights 1-6 and booking #2 for night #7. Orbucks earned from reservation #1 can immediately be used toward the second reservation, which covers night #7. If the Orbitz promo code requires a minimum two-night stay, then it can be split into nights 1-5 and 6-7.
As long as the same type of room is available for the entire duration of stay, there do not seem to be any drawbacks, other than possibly having to go to the the front desk to formally check in for the second reservation. Orbitz can notify the resort that the two reservations should be linked, so that a change of room would not be required. With online check-in, a stop at the front desk for the second check-in may not even be required.
