Got 3 in the mail today from friends. Not late Christmas cards, but cards that actually say "Happy New Year" and one with a family letter in it.

Must be another trend I missed.

New Years Cards (usually postcards) are traditional in Japan.

I'm going to be sending some late Christmas cards to folks I received from and didn't send to - but they'll probably get the same cards that everyone else did.

I was at a Hallmark store about 2 weeks before Christmas and saw several packages (different designs) of Happy New Year cards. I really debated on whether to send those OR Christmas cards.
I haven't received any Happy New Year cards. Did you get Happy New year cards from people who also sent you Christmas cards?

No Christmas cards from these folks, just the New Year's cards.

My grandfather told me he was sending New Year's cards, because when he went to the store, they were all that were there. that, and he could wait until he got all his Christmas cards, and only send them to those people

I did New Years cards because I didn't finish up my holiday cards in time. I really didn't give it much thought, the cards were blank inside so I just wrote some blurb about our family wishing your family a happy 2012 or something like that. I usually try to do photo cards every year in December but I didn't even have them ordered till the second week of December this year.

A few friends started switching to the New Year's cards a couple years ago. Honestly I've been considering it as a way of making the holiday rush less brutal. I think Costco even has New Year's options in their photocards.

Two years ago, when my mom was really ill, I ran out of time to send Christmas cards, so I chose a New Year design, a good photo of DD, and had them printed. I addressed them and so forth at my leisure, and sent them out Christmas eve so people got them before the New Year. To me, it was the perfect solution, and eliminated the stress I was feeling.

Standard for us here. You can send them throughout January wishing everone a Happy New Year. They don't send Christmas cards out before.

I'm used to it now but the first year was really strange. I send out CC to all my none French family and friends and then we are sending out this weekend the NY cards to all the rest :)

Same here. I kept forgetting to order my photo cards. Once I realized it was going to be after Christmas I ordered ones that say Happy New Year instead of Merry Christmas.

My mother switched to new year’s cards. She has always sent a family photo card but now the only time we are all together is Christmas. So instead of skipping the photo or sending a late christmas cards its now a new year’s card

5 years ago we moved into our new house in January, so instead of Christmas cards that year we sent out New Years cards with a picture of our house with our new address and phone number.

I love the idea of doing New Year's cards, and I still might do it this year. Haven't send Christmas cards in a few years...lots going on. Years ago, when we used to go to Orlando from Thanksgiving till a week and a half later, I decided to get holiday cards out of the way and sent Thanksgiving cards. I might do that again NEXT year.

we don't celebrate Christmas (Jewish) and our friends and family are a mixed bag of Jews, Christians, Hindus, athiests/agnostics...so we send out New Year's cards. A lot of our Jewish family and friends do the same.

I would consider sending New Year's cards if a lot of my friends did not celebrate Christmas.

I usually get two "non Christmas" cards per year. One is from a Jewish friend. She either sends me a Hanukkah card or a New Year card (depends on the year). Another friend sends Thanksgiving Cards (with photos of the kids and a family letter) every year. I think her reason is the same -- a lot of her friends don't celebrate Christmas.

I'm happy with whatever kind of card I get... although mine are usually Christmas card, with a note to my Jewish friend that I hope she had a nice Hanukkah.

I actually send out New Years cards instead of Christmas or Hanukkah cards because it's much easier :P. My husband's side is Jewish and mine is Lutheran so I decided after our first year of being married that we would just do New Years cards to save time and money. I make them from Shutterfly's holiday cards templates with a family picture (from WDW if we went that year ;)) and a little letter like you mentioned.
