Friday 14th March

Happy 21st Birthday to my beautiful baby girl.

From this...

to this...

and now this...

I am not going to wax lyrical but please indulge me for just a moment while I reminisce a little. There was a time, during her late teens, when I thought that Sian might not make it through to adulthood with both of us still alive (or at the very least my sanity still intact). But she did make it through and has turned into a wonderful young lady. She is a fantastic big sister, an amazing daughter and step-daughter and both Gary and I are incredibly proud of her. I absolutely loved spending this week at Disney with her and we had many, many laughs – and a few niggles. In fact, the whole week was very representative of our relationship - Like a roller-coaster; lots of ups and downs, a few hairy moments but overall a lot of fun.

Anyway, on with the trip report and the Friday fun.

So, I was up super early this morning (what’s new?) and ‘decorating’ the table in our room with confetti, ready to lay out all of Sian’s cards and presents that I’d brought with me.

Despite my banging around and clearing my throat several times, Sian seemed somewhat reluctant to wake up this morning so I resorted to jumping on the bed next to her, pulling one eyelid up and whispering loudly “Wanna build a snowman?” It didn’t really have the desired effect but I persisted (evil, impatient Mother that I am) and eventually she dragged herself out of bed while I bounced around the room singing “Happy Birthday” while she opened her presents and cards.

Quite a haul! She got lots of lovely presents from various family and friends. Obviously, mine and Gary’s gift to her was the holiday and the La Nouba tickets so just a box of chocolates from us, but she was very spoiled and got lots of cash, which she used to treat herself to a few things later in the trip.

We decided, since we were up and about, that we might as well go to Epcot earlier than planned and Sian said she would quite like to meet Anna and Elsa. After showering and getting dressed, we arrived at International Gateway around 8.45 to find that they were already letting people in. Now I had read in advance about long lines to meet the Norwegian princesses but nothing had quite prepared me for what we witnessed. As we walked through Canada and approached World Showcase plaza, there were people literally running up towards Norway. Dads, kids, women with strollers, kids running and pushing their own strollers because Mom couldn’t go fast enough….It was unbelievable. We continued walking round and when we got to the entrance to Norway, that was where we found the end of the line. The beginning (well, middle) is in the picture below.

And this is where the line was when we arrived.

The line came all the way round and down to where Norway meets Mexico. The CM you see on the left of the picture is the end of that part of the line, stopping anyone else from joining and redirecting them to where we are, across the walkway forming the beginning of the ‘next part of the line’. After we were moved across there, another CM came past with a counter asking how many in each party and informing them of the approximate wait time. When she got to us, I braced myself but did not expect what I heard “Your wait time from here will be approximately 4 and a half hours”!!!

We were going to wait. After all, it was Sian’s Birthday and it was all about what she wanted to do. So I told her “If you want to spend half of your Birthday waiting in line to meet two people dressed up as princesses from a cartoon then, my darling daughter, that is what we will do”. Seriously, if she had chosen to wait then we would have waited but, luckily, she realised that it wasn’t very sensible and we discussed changing our plans slightly to come another day and try to beat the rush. Hat decided, we headed off to Future World to continue our day.

We started off at The Land, where we waited in standby for Soarin’ (about a 20 minute wait, which wasn’t too bad since it was around 9.30 by the time we actually got there). We got front row, just off to the right and were sitting next to a couple who were obviously riding for the first time. I love to see the reactions of first timers. It still ‘wows’ me even now, after more times than I can count, so it is incredible to see how it gets people who haven’t experienced it before.

After Soarin’ it was time for a Birthday breakfast. Due to a bit of a problem in Sunshine Seasons, we ended up sharing an Apple Caramel Crunch. We had approached the bakery section, with the intention of getting a couple of pastries to share. Everything in the display cabinet was labelled incorrectly and I was having difficulty working out what a few things were. In the end, I asked the CM behind the counter about a couple of things and she responded that a small rectangular cake item was “banana loaf”. Well, I love banana bread so I chose that and Sian opted for the Apple Caramel Crunch. When we took it to the cash register, the banana loaf showed up as banana NUT loaf. I detest walnuts and, knowing that walnuts are often the type of nut in banana loaf, I asked what kind of nuts were in it. I won’t bore you with the exchange between myself and the (somewhat rude CM) but it culminated in me having been blamed for not asking in the first place if there were walnuts in it? Apparently, I should have declared that I had an allergy (although I did explain that it was a preference, not an allergy) and asked if anything had nuts in (to which I then explained that it wasn’t all nuts, just walnuts). Anyway, we ended up not having the banana NUT loaf and sharing the Apple Caramel Crunch (which did have nuts but they were hazelnuts so perfectly fine). It was actually really nice but both of us were a bit peeved after the exchange.

Breakfast finished, it was time for our Soarin’ FP+ so we rode again and then headed out. After stopping for a quick photo opportunity with Chip and Dale, we strolled over to the other side of Future World for Mission: Space and Test Track, taking a detour past Spaceship Earth, which had the longest standby line I’ve ever seen. It said 20 minutes but I can’t believe that it was.

[

After Mission:Space it was time to build ourselves a super car in Test Track. I have said it before but I love this addition to Test Track. It really adds an element of interest to an otherwise fairly dull ride (with the exception of the end, of course). I let Sian design our vehicle.

We got best in the car and an overall score of 202 (best of the day at that time was 221). It was around 12.30 by now and we were both feeling pretty peckish so decided to snack around World Showcase a little bit. We were due to have dinner at Yachtsman Steakhouse tonight but neither of us were in the mood for steak so we cancelled the ADR (no penalty as it had been booked prior to the new policy) and booked Via Napoli for 8.30 instead.

With that done, we headed for World Showcase.

Our first snack (well, mostly mine because Sian ended up not liking it) was the Cronut – the perfect marriage of a croissant with a donut. It was sweet, sugary and so good. But very filling and I felt a little sick after demolishing most of it by myself.

Snack number two - lemon scones with strawberry jam and crème fraiche. The scones were tiny (I mean really diddy) and the lemon was very subtle, practically undetectable, but they were warm and fresh and tasted great with the strawberry jam.

On into France and I wonder if anybody who knows me would guess what snack (or rather, refreshment) number three is?

Ha! Fooled you – who thought it would be the Grey Goose Citron Slush?

No, snack number three involved a trip to France’s newest ice-cream shop, L’Artisans Des Glaces, where Sian had a two-scoop combination of strawberry and chocolate and I had the ultra-delicious Brioche Ice-Cream Sandwich (with mint chip ice-cream and chocolate sauce).

The warm, sweet brioche paired with the cold creamy ice-cream made for a divine taste explosion. In hindsight, the mint probably wasn’t the best choice of ice-cream flavour for this but it was highly enjoyable nonetheless. Needless to say, pretty much half of it went into the nearest trash as I really couldn’t eat another bite. Half of Sian’s went to waste too.

Surely they can’t manage another snack after this, I hear you scream. Well, no we couldn’t. We were both thoroughly stuffed, although obviously I had room for a little liquid refreshment.

Ta-Da! Ladies and gentlemen, I present the awesome wonder that is the Grey Goose Citron Slush. Best beverage at Epcot.

Eager for Sian to share in the joy, now that she was legally allowed to drink in the United States, I passed it lovingly to her. She took a sip and pulled a face. “I don’t like it” she said, making as if to take another sip (presumably just to be sure?), “It tastes too much like alcohol.”

“Give it back then” I replied, snatching it not-so-lovingly back from her grip.

I am beginning to doubt whether we are actually related :rotfl:

After a brief discussion about what we should do next (bearing in mind, we didn’t want any more snacks now), we decided to head back for a bit of pool time. It was such a beautiful afternoon and we were coming back later this evening for dinner and evening EMH.

We took a slow stroll back to International Gateway while I finished my slush (for some reason, you’re not allowed to take alcoholic drinks out of Epcot). Then we walked back round the Boardwalk to the hotel.

We got changed and went down to the Scary Clown pool, where we had to scan our Magic Bands to show we were staying at the resort. We went to the bar to get a couple of drinks and Sian purchased her first ever alcoholic drink in the US. The bartender asked for her ID, which she handed over but he didn’t even have the grace to wish her a Happy Birthday. We charged the drinks cost to the room and left a cash tip on the bar, then grabbed a couple of chairs next to the pool. It really was a beautiful afternoon and the time passed by quickly, while we sipped our drinks and read our Kindles.

After we’d had our fill of sitting in the sun, we went back to the room to shower and change before heading back to Epcot via the Boardwalk.

We had some time to kill before our 8.30 ADR so we enjoyed strolling slowly around World Showcase.

Eventually, it was almost time for our ADR. Sian’s feet were giving her real problems tonight so we decided to head over to Via Napoli and see if we could be seated early. We still had a bit of a wait but eventually we were led to a table towards the back of the restaurant. We were both relieved to be able to sit down.

We ordered drinks – I almost disowned Sian when she ordered a diet coke. I had a Via Vesuvio (Blood Orange vodka, Prosecco and pomegranate). We ordered the Fritto Misto appetiser to share, then Sian had the Pollo Parmigiana and I had the Quattro Formaggio personal pizza.

Dinner was fantastic. The Fritto Misto (a combination of calamari, fried cheese curds and battered vegetables) was lovely, although I didn’t care much for the artichoke. The calamari was great, with a light breading and not at all chewy. The cheese curds were also delicious, very tasty. Sian really enjoyed her chicken parm, although she said the tomato sauce had a bit of a kick. The pizza was amazing. Thin, chewy crust with a delicious cheesy topping. One of the cheeses (I couldn’t figure out which one) was quite strong tasting and I ended up leaving the very middle part as it was a bit too cheesy. There was no way I could have finished it all anyway.

I had been messaging a fellow DISer, Jen (nenner1), on Facebook throughout the day and she told me they were heading over to Beaches & Cream so I said we would walk over and say ‘Hi’ once we were finished eating. We had been ‘talking’ for years on the DIS and Facebook but had never met in person, so I was very excited to finally meet her. I paid the check (it was $95.98 after the TIW discount, plus 18% tip but I rounded it up to $100) and we left Epcot via International Gateway before walking over to Beaches and Cream where we found Jen and her wonderful family attempting to demolish a Kitchen Sink.

We chatted for a while but Sian was quite tired and her feet were hurting so we wandered back to the room. I can’t quite believe that, despite it being Sian’s 21st, we were in bed by 11.

A happy Happy Birthday. Thank Sian for letting you share it with us. Once again, gorgeous photography (keep that camera).

Glad Sian had a great birthday. That clown at the pool is totally freaky :scared1: Delicious looking food at Via Napoli, not tried there yet.

what a lovely (but emotional) day - though I can't believe the bartender didn't pick up on her birthday ID. :goodvibes:

I'm loving the camera Susan, it's definitely a keeper! This is the first time I've really looked at the photos we took and I can't believe how nice they turned out.

The clown certainly is freaky Sara, I tried not to look at him if I could help it. He reminds me of Pennywise the Clown, from IT!

Via Napoli was great, I would recommend it :thumbsup2

It was a lovely day but, yes, while she got lots of Birthday wishes throughout the day, the bartender didn't pick up on it and nor did our server at dinner, despite the fact that I'd noted it when we checked in for our ADR and she was wearing her Birthday buttons.

Hi Joh! I knew I had seen something about your TR.... sorry to be so late! I have to go read your other days.

I knew I'd find a grey goose slushie somewhere in your day at Epcot! ;)
What a great 21st birthday for Sian! Sounds like a lovely day.

It always amazes me how beautiful Epcot is when it's the F&GF...cannot wait to see it again next year! :goodvibes

Sounds like despite the early night, Sian had a lovely 21st birthday and that you managed some great treats and a lovely meal in there too!
